# Parfums de Marly Herod Review: Notes, Wear and Who It Suits

https://www.scento.com/blog/parfums-de-marly-herod-review

November 2, 2026

Parfums de Marly Herod is a woody spicy tobacco perfume launched in 2012 and created by Olivier Pescheux[1]. The house sells it as an Eau de Parfum that opens with cinnamon and pepper, moves to tobacco leaf, incense and osmanthus, and settles into vanilla, musks and cedarwood[2]. One reviewer found it lasts nine hours on skin[3].

## In short

- Herod is the seventh perfume from Parfums de Marly, launched in 2012[1].
- The house lists cinnamon and pepper, then tobacco leaf, incense, cistus and osmanthus, then vanilla, musks and cedarwood[2].
- Besuited Aroma reports nine hours of wear with light to average projection, and calls it exclusively a fall and winter perfume[3].
- Against Tobacco Vanille, Herod trades cacao, tonka and dried fruits[4] for cinnamon, pepper, incense, cistus and osmanthus[2].

## Herod at a glance

Fragrantica files Herod as a woody spicy fragrance for men, the seventh perfume from the house[1]. Parfums de Marly describes it in three sentences: “Herod opens with the spicy intensity of cinnamon, evolves into a deep heart of tobacco leaves, then settles into a warm vanilla base. Prestigious, gourmand and opulent.”[2] The house sells it as Eau de Parfum in 75 ml and 125 ml[2].

Our reading of the note list is simple. This is a spiced tobacco perfume on a vanilla base, with incense in the heart, and it has little in common with fresh or fruity fragrances. If you want to try it before committing to a full bottle, [Herod is available as a 2 ml decant (€9.95)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/herod-parfums-de-marly), and the rest of the house is covered in our [Parfums de Marly collection](https://www.scento.com/brand/parfums-de-marly) and the [guide to the house's best perfumes](https://www.scento.com/blog/best-parfums-de-marly-perfumes-equestrian-luxury-picks).

## Herod notes, as Parfums de Marly lists them

The house's current pyramid is short. The top is cinnamon and pepper, the heart is tobacco leaf, incense, cistus and osmanthus, and the base is vanilla, musks and cedarwood[2]. Cinnamon and tobacco each have their own page on the site, if you want to see where else they appear: [perfumes with a cinnamon note](https://www.scento.com/note/cinnamon) and [perfumes with a tobacco note](https://www.scento.com/note/tobacco).

You will find a longer list elsewhere. Fragrantica's older entry gives cinnamon and Pepperwood™ on top, tobacco leaf, incense, osmanthus and labdanum in the heart, and vanilla, Iso E Super, musk, cedar, cypriol oil or nagarmotha, vetiver and amber in the base[1]. The same entry says “It is available as 125 ml EDT”[1]. That wording reflects the original listing. The house today sells Herod as an Eau de Parfum[2], so treat the shorter house pyramid as the current one.

## What the ingredient list tells you

Few Herod reviews read the declared ingredients. The house's EU page publishes a list of 23 entries[2]. Our analysis of it, read on 27 October 2026, found four things worth knowing.

- Vanillin and coumarin are both declared, which fits a perfume built around vanilla[2].
- Cinnamon bark oil (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Bark Oil) and cinnamal are declared, which matches the cinnamon top note[2].
- Patchouli oil (Pogostemon Cablin Oil) is declared, although patchouli is not in the house's current pyramid[2].
- The US page carries a shorter allergen-style set (coumarin, BHT, benzyl benzoate, linalool, geraniol, limonene, cinnamal and eugenol), so lists differ by market[2].

The same exercise on the siblings is useful. Layton's EU list also declares vanillin, coumarin and patchouli oil[6]. Althaïr declares vanillin and cinnamon bark oil but no coumarin[7]. Pegasus declares vanillin and no coumarin[8]. An ingredient list is not a formula, so we use it only as a cross-check on the pyramid.

## What it smells like, from first spray to dry-down

On the house's account, the opening is cinnamon and pepper[2]. Besuited Aroma, a fragrance review publication, hears it slightly differently: “Tobacco and vanilla are no doubt the focal point in the opening.”[3] Both views fit the note list, since cinnamon and tobacco sit close together.

The heart is where the house places tobacco leaf, incense, cistus and osmanthus[2]. The same reviewer describes a change shortly after application: “15-20 minutes into the wear, its strength is waning. A sea of vanilla comes back in full force.”[3] The base is vanilla, musks and cedarwood[2]. The house's own sample collection labels Herod “Amber Vanilla Tobacco”[2].

## How it wears: season, projection and a 2 ml test

Besuited Aroma's review is the clearest account of wear we found. Its verdict: “Herod lasts 9 hours on the skin but has light to average projection.”[3] It adds: “This is exclusively a fall and winter wear.”[3] That is one reviewer on one skin, not a rule. Longevity changes with skin, climate and how much you apply.

The practical way to settle it is to wear it several times. A [2 ml Herod decant (€9.95)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/herod-parfums-de-marly) covers a handful of wears, and the 5 ml (€22.90) and 8 ml (€32.95) vials suit a longer trial. A 30 ml decant is also available (€97.90). Try it on a cold day first, since that is where the one reviewer places it.

## Who Herod suits, and who should skip it

Herod suits anyone who already likes tobacco, cinnamon or vanilla in a perfume, and who wants a warm scent for autumn and winter evenings. Besuited Aroma says it can be worn casually and on dates[3]. It is less obvious for people who prefer fresh, citrus or aquatic fragrances, because nothing in the pyramid points that way[2].

On gender, the sources differ. Fragrantica files Herod “for men”[1], while Besuited Aroma calls it “a unisex fragrance that leans more masculine”[3]. For the office, the same reviewer is measured: “There are better office fragrances than this one, but it can still be worn.”[3]

## Herod against its Parfums de Marly siblings

Parfums de Marly is the number 3 house by share of paid decant units at Scento, with a 7% share (Scento Fragrance Index, Europe, October 2025 to September 2026). Herod sits outside the index's published top lists, while Layton and Althaïr are both in Europe's top 12. That makes the siblings the natural comparison, and they are the closest answer to the “layton herod” searches we see.

### Layton by Parfums de Marly

Layton opens with apple, bergamot and cardamom, has lavender, violet and geranium in the heart, and rests on patchouli, vanilla, guaiac wood and praline[6]. The house calls it “Elegant, sensual and flamboyant”[6]. Fragrantica dates it to 2016, credits Hamid Merati-Kashani and files it as an Oriental Floral for women and men[9]. It is the number 9 perfume across Europe and number 4 among masculine perfumes in the Scento Fragrance Index. Choose Layton for fruit and lavender over vanilla, and Herod for spice and tobacco. [Layton as a 2 ml decant (€9.95)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/layton-parfums-de-marly).

### Pegasus by Parfums de Marly

Pegasus opens with anise, bergamot and almond, moves through cypress, violet leaves and orange blossom, and ends on Ambrox, vanilla and sandalwood[8]. It launched in 2011 and was the house's sixth perfume, created by Hamid Merati-Kashani[10]. Herod followed it in 2012. The shared ground is vanilla; Pegasus has no tobacco or cinnamon in its pyramid. [Pegasus as a 2 ml decant (€7.95)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/pegasus-by-parfums-de-marly).

### Althaïr by Parfums de Marly

Althaïr starts with bergamot, mandarin and elemi, moves to orange blossom, cinnamon and cardamom, and settles into Bourbon vanilla, guaiac wood and praline[7]. The house describes it as “Elegant, generous and charismatic”[7]. Fragrantica's perfumer page lists it as a 2023 creation by Hamid Merati-Kashani[11]. It is number 12 across Europe and number 6 among masculine perfumes in the Scento Fragrance Index. Cinnamon and vanilla connect it to Herod; tobacco does not. [Althaïr as a 2 ml decant (€9.90)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/althair-parfums-de-marly).

### Althaïr Exclusif by Parfums de Marly

Althaïr Exclusif is sold as a Parfum in 75 ml and 125 ml[12]. The house says it “composes an olfactory sonata built around an intense Bourbon vanilla, elevated by the velvety nuances of amaretto and the warm radiance of saffron”[12]. [Althaïr Exclusif as a 2 ml decant (€11.90)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/althair-exclusif-parfums-de-marly).

## Herod next to other tobacco-vanilla perfumes

Readers do search for “herod vs tobacco vanille”, so we start there.

### Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford

Tobacco Vanille launched in 2007 and was created by Olivier Gillotin[4]. Its notes are tobacco leaf and spicy notes on top, vanilla, cacao, tonka bean and tobacco blossom in the heart, and dried fruits and woody notes in the base[4]. Herod frames its tobacco with cinnamon, pepper, incense, cistus and osmanthus over cedarwood instead[2]. Besuited Aroma's judgement is that “Herod is not a 1:1” with it[3]. In the Scento Fragrance Index, Tobacco Vanille is number 18 across Europe and number 9 among unisex perfumes. Our [Tobacco Vanille smell guide](https://www.scento.com/blog/what-does-tom-ford-tobacco-vanille-smell-like) goes deeper. [Tobacco Vanille as a 2 ml decant (€14.90)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/tobacco-vanille-tom-ford).

### XJ 1861 Naxos by Xerjoff

Xerjoff presented Naxos at Esxence 2015 in Milan[13]. Its notes are bergamot, lemon and lavender, then jasmine sambac, cinnamon, honey and cashmeran, then tobacco leaf, tonka and vanilla[13]. It shares cinnamon, tobacco and vanilla with Herod, with honey and jasmine added. It is number 5 across Europe in the Scento Fragrance Index. [XJ 1861 Naxos as a 2 ml decant (€10.90)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/xj-1861-naxos-xerjoff).

### Spicebomb Extreme by Viktor&Rolf

Spicebomb Extreme launched in 2015 and was created by Carlos Benaïm and Jean-Christophe Hérault[14]. Fragrantica lists vanilla, tobacco, cinnamon, cumin, bourbon whiskey and saffron[14]. Cinnamon, tobacco and vanilla are the overlap with Herod. [Spicebomb Extreme as a 2 ml decant (€10.90)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/spicebomb-extreme-viktor-rolf).

### Jazz Club by Maison Margiela

Jazz Club launched in 2013 and was created by Alienor Massenet[15]. It opens with pink pepper, neroli and lemon, has rum, Java vetiver oil and clary sage in the heart, and ends on tobacco leaf, vanilla bean and styrax[15]. It shares tobacco leaf and vanilla with Herod. [Jazz Club as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/jazz-club-maison-margiela).

### Red Tobacco by Mancera

Red Tobacco launched in 2017 and was created by Pierre Montale[16]. Its notes include cinnamon, oud, incense, saffron, nutmeg, green apple and white pear, patchouli and jasmine, then tobacco, Madagascar vanilla, amber, sandalwood, guaiac wood, white musk and Haitian vetiver[16]. Cinnamon, incense, tobacco and vanilla are the shared ground with Herod. [Red Tobacco as a 2 ml decant (€5.90)](https://www.scento.com/perfumes/red-tobacco-mancera).

## Why it is called Herod

Herod shares its name with Herod, the 18th-century racehorse. Wikipedia records him as a Thoroughbred (April 1758 to 12 May 1780) and the foundation sire responsible for keeping the Byerley Turk sire-line alive[18]. Thoroughbred Heritage says he was the leading sire in Great Britain eight times, from 1777 to 1784, and that he and Eclipse were bred by the same man, William, the Duke of Cumberland[5]. Timeform adds that through Herod the Byerley Turk “established a male bloodline that still exerts some influence today”[19]. Linking the perfume to this horse is a natural reading of the house's horse-racing theme rather than something we have seen the house state.

## Your questions

### What does Parfums de Marly Herod smell like?

Parfums de Marly lists cinnamon and pepper on top, tobacco leaf, incense, cistus and osmanthus in the heart, and vanilla, musks and cedarwood in the base. The house calls it "Prestigious, gourmand and opulent". Besuited Aroma hears tobacco and vanilla as the focal point of the opening, with a wave of vanilla returning about 15-20 minutes into the wear.

### When did Herod come out and who made it?

Fragrantica gives Herod's launch year as 2012 and names Olivier Pescheux as the nose behind it. It describes Herod as the seventh perfume from the house Parfums de Marly. Fragrantica also lists the house's earliest edition as created in 2009, so Herod came out a few years into the range.

### Is Herod an Eau de Parfum or an Eau de Toilette?

Parfums de Marly sells Herod as an Eau de Parfum in 75 ml and 125 ml. Fragrantica's original listing says it is available as a 125 ml EDT, which reflects the early listing. The house's own current product page is titled Herod Eau de Parfum, so treat the current product as an Eau de Parfum.

### How long does Herod last?

Besuited Aroma says Herod lasts 9 hours on the skin but has light to average projection. That is one reviewer's skin, not a rule, and wear varies with skin, climate and how much you apply. A 2 ml decant (€9.95 at Scento) lets you test it across several wears before choosing a larger size.

### Herod vs Tobacco Vanille: what is the difference?

Fragrantica lists Tobacco Vanille (2007) with tobacco leaf and spicy notes, then vanilla, cacao, tonka bean and tobacco blossom, over dried fruits and woody notes. Parfums de Marly frames Herod's tobacco with cinnamon, pepper, incense, cistus and osmanthus over cedarwood. Besuited Aroma says "Herod is not a 1:1" with Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille.

### Herod vs Layton: which should I choose?

Parfums de Marly describes Layton as apple, lavender and patchouli over vanilla and praline, while Herod is the spicier tobacco option, built on cinnamon, tobacco leaf and incense. In the Scento Fragrance Index (Oct 2025 – Sep 2026), Layton is the number 9 perfume across Europe; Herod is outside the published top lists.

### Is Herod for men or women?

Fragrantica files Herod as a woody spicy fragrance for men. Besuited Aroma calls it a unisex fragrance that leans more masculine. Nothing in the house's note list restricts it by gender, so the choice comes down to whether you enjoy spiced tobacco and vanilla, which a 2 ml decant lets you test cheaply.

### Who is Herod named after?

Herod shares its name with Herod, the 18th-century Thoroughbred racehorse. Wikipedia describes him as the foundation sire who kept the Byerley Turk sire-line alive, and Thoroughbred Heritage says he was Great Britain's leading sire eight times, from 1777 to 1784. Parfums de Marly's concept is built around horse racing, though we have not seen the house state this link.
