Niche Perfume Discovery Sets in Europe
A niche perfume discovery set is a small collection of samples that lets you try several fragrances before committing to a full bottle. In Europe you have three routes: official single-brand sets sold as a box by a house or its retailer, curated multi-brand sample sets, and build-your-own sets from a decant retailer.
Scento is the customizable route — build your own set of any five 8ml decants (about 120 sprays each) from 1,000+ fragrances across our 200-brand designer & niche sourcing roster, with a built-in 10% saving on the set. Individual samples start at €4.90; serving 27 European markets, shipped to 26 European countries from our EU facility.

What is a niche perfume discovery set?
A discovery set is a bundle of small fragrance samples — usually 1–8ml each — packaged so you can test a range of scents at home instead of blind-buying a full bottle. "Niche" simply means the fragrances come from independent or artistic houses rather than mass designer lines, though most retailers mix both.
The point of a discovery set is low-risk exploration. A full bottle of a niche fragrance often runs €100–€200 or more, and a scent that smells wonderful on a blotter can turn out wrong on your skin. A set of samples lets you live with several candidates over a few days — morning, evening, warm room, cold air — before spending on the one that actually earns a place on your shelf.
The three formats differ mainly in who chooses the scents. An official brand set fixes the selection for you; a multi-brand set is curated by the seller; a build-your-own set puts the whole catalogue in your hands. Which is right depends on whether you want depth in one house, a broad spread, or exactly the scents already on your list.
Official brand sets vs multi-brand sets vs build-your-own: which should you choose?
All three are widely available in Europe. None is universally "best" — the right one depends on how much you already know about what you like. This is a qualitative comparison; we only quote prices for Scento, where we can verify them.
| Official brand set | Multi-brand set | Build-your-own | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who picks the scents | The house — a fixed line-up | The seller — a curated theme | You — every sample is your choice |
| Depth vs breadth | Deep in a single house | Broad across several houses | Broad — any of 1,000+ fragrances |
| Volume per sample | Small fixed vials | Small fixed vials | 8ml decants (≈120 sprays each) |
| Path to a full bottle | Often a credit toward that house (varies by brand) | Varies by seller | Same catalogue — reorder the size you loved |
| Best for | Fans committed to one house | Explorers wanting a spread | Anyone with a shortlist to test |
Official discovery sets exist from houses such as Amouage and Xerjoff and from various niche retailers; we don’t list third-party prices because they change often and vary by market. Check the house or retailer directly for their current set.
How much does a discovery set cost per millilitre?
Cost-per-millilitre is the honest way to compare a set against a blind full-bottle purchase. Here is the arithmetic on Scento’s own pricing — the numbers we can stand behind.
- One 2ml decant
- from €4.90 → €2.45 per ml (≈ 30 sprays)
- An 8ml decant
- roughly 120 sprays — enough to wear a scent for weeks (price varies by fragrance)
- Build-your-own set of five 8ml decants
- 10% off the combined price of the five you choose
- A blind full bottle instead
- €100–€200+ committed up front, on one untested scent
The smallest 2ml size is the cheapest way to try a scent at €2.45 per ml; sizing up to 5ml or 8ml lowers the cost per spray. A build-your-own set of five 8ml decants takes 10% off the combined price and lets you live with five fragrances before committing €100–€200+ to a single full bottle.

How many samples do you need to find a signature scent?
There is no fixed number — it depends on how clear your taste already is. If you know you love, say, warm amber or fresh citrus, a focused set of three to five well-chosen samples in that family is often enough to find a favourite. If you’re starting from scratch, a broader spread across different scent families helps you learn what you gravitate toward before you narrow down.
A useful approach is to wear one sample per day, on skin rather than paper, and note how it changes over several hours and how you feel wearing it. A 2ml decant gives you around 30 sprays — plenty for a few full wears — so a five-sample set covers a couple of weeks of real testing. When one keeps pulling you back, that’s your signature candidate, and you can reorder it in a larger size or as a full bottle.
Build-your-own sets suit this well because you control the mix: start broad to explore, then build a second, tighter set around the two or three families that won you over.
