Natural perfume materials range from under $100 to tens of thousands of dollars per kilo. In summer 2026, Bulgarian rose oil traded at $12 750 per kg and Indian jasmine absolute at $3900 per kg, according to supplier Ultra International.1 Indonesian patchouli oil fell to $79 per kg, from $200–225 in autumn 2024.17 Oud (agarwood) oil can reach $40 000–50 000 per litre, according to a 2022 CITES review.10 Madagascar’s average vanilla export price dropped to $38 per kg in the fourth quarter of 2025.8 Even so, a Scento analysis with illustrative dosages finds that even costly naturals add only a few dollars to a 100 ml bottle.

Which perfume ingredient is the most expensive?
Oud oil is among the costliest materials traded. A 2022 CITES review of agarwood describes “a litre of oil commanding a price of USD 40 000–50 000”.10 Earlier trade quotes collected by TRAFFIC put oud oil generally at $5000–10 000 per kg, with pure oil made to order reaching $30 000 per kg.11 Our article on oud in luxury perfumery explains where the resin comes from.
Orris butter, made from aged iris roots, is in the same range. Industry commentary puts it at 40 000 €–100 000 per kg.20 That figure comes from a fragrance blog, not a trade price list, so treat it as an indication. Our guide to why iris costs more than gold covers the slow process behind it.
Natural deer musk was once the most famous costly material. Musk deer are listed under CITES: the populations of Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan are on Appendix I, which bars commercial trade, and all others are on Appendix II.23 The price per kilo often repeated online has no primary source, so we do not quote one. Modern perfumes use synthetic musks instead.
Rose and jasmine: the flower premium
Flower oils are expensive because the yield is tiny. Bulgarian rose oil, the benchmark, has risen overall in Ultra International’s reports, with a dip in spring 2026.75321
- Autumn 2024: $11 000 per kg.
- Spring 2025: $11 580 per kg.
- Autumn 2025: $12 854 per kg.
- Spring 2026: $12 000 per kg.
- Summer 2026: $12 750 per kg.
From autumn 2024 to summer 2026, that is a rise of 15,9%, a Scento analysis of the report prices. Supply explains part of it: frosts in April and May cut 2025 Bulgarian rose yields by 35–50% compared with 2024.3
| Report | Bulgarian rose oil |
|---|---|
| Autumn 2024 | $11 000 |
| Spring 2025 | $11 580 |
| Autumn 2025 | $12 854 |
| Spring 2026 | $12 000 |
| Summer 2026 | $12 750 |
Jasmine absolute costs about a third as much as rose oil. Egyptian jasmine was quoted at $3100 per kg in autumn 2025 and $3600 in spring 2026.32 Indian jasmine was quoted at $3300 per kg in spring 2026, for sambac and grandiflorum together, and grandiflorum at $3900 in summer 2026.21
Neroli, distilled from bitter-orange blossom, varies widely by origin. It was quoted at $4550 per kg from Morocco in autumn 2025 and $1900 per kg from Egypt in spring 2026.32
Woods and roots: sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli
Australian sandalwood oil (Santalum spicatum) was quoted at $1200 per kg in spring 2026.2 Australia holds about 69% of the world sandalwood market and India 20%, according to the Sandalwood Development Committee.15 Indian sandalwood wood, not oil, sells at ₹3000–15 000 per kg across 18 grades, according to the managing director of Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL).14
Vetiver is cheaper. Haitian vetiver oil was quoted at $550 per kg in autumn 2025.3 Indian vetiver rose from $325 per kg in autumn 2025 to $380 in spring 2026.32
Patchouli shows how quickly a natural price can collapse. Indonesia supplies over 85% of the world’s patchouli oil.54 Its price fell from $200–225 per kg in autumn 2024 to $79 in summer 2026, a drop of about 60–65%, a Scento analysis of the report prices.71
| Report | Indonesian patchouli oil |
|---|---|
| Autumn 2024 | $200–225 |
| Spring 2025 | $150 |
| Summer 2025 | $100 |
| Winter 2025 | $72 |
| Spring 2026 | $69 |
| Summer 2026 | $79 |
Vanilla: from $600 to under $40
Vanilla went through the sharpest cycle of any perfume material. Prices topped $600 per kg in 2017–2019.9 Madagascar, the main producer, then overplanted.
Over the first nine months of 2024, the Central Bank of Madagascar’s average export price fell from $206,2 per kg to $50,4 per kg, according to Escale Bleue.9 It then fell from $63,6 per kg in the fourth quarter of 2024 to $38 in the fourth quarter of 2025, down 40,2%.8
Oversupply drives the fall. Madagascar exported 4300 tonnes in the 2023/24 season against about 2500 tonnes of global demand.8 The $250 per kg export floor price and the $4 per kg export tax were both dropped in late 2025.9
| Period | Measure | Price (USD/kg) | Source |

Ambergris and ambroxan
Real ambergris is sold by the gram. Dealer list prices in 2026 run from 20–28 per gram by grade at Ambergris Connect (no currency stated), $23–32 per gram at RawAmbergris.com and US$35 per gram at Ambergris NZ, which says it is currently closed.161718 That works out to about $20 000–35 000 per kg, a Scento analysis of the dealer prices. These are dealer list prices, not trade benchmarks. Trade in ambergris is banned in the US, and Australia bans its commercial export.2122
Most perfumes use ambroxide instead, a synthetic that recreates ambergris’s warm, mineral note. A 2026 supplier page lists it at about $700–1100 per kg at retail and $300–600 per kg in bulk from China.19 Our article on how ambroxan replaced ambergris covers the switch.
Natural or synthetic: how much of perfume is natural?
Most of what goes into perfume today is made by synthesis. IFRA, the fragrance industry’s trade body, states: “About three-quarters of fragrance now comes from modern synthesis plants.”12 Givaudan, the fragrance and flavour company, said in 2019 that “20% of all raw materials bought for fragrances are natural”.13
Natural materials still need a lot of land. About 90 000 hectares grow fragrance crops worldwide, according to IFRA.12 Our guide to natural and synthetic perfume ingredients compares the two in more depth.
Do ingredients explain bottle prices?
Not by much. A Scento analysis of a 100 ml eau de parfum makes the point. At an 18% concentrate, the bottle holds 18 ml of perfume oil, or about 16 g at a density of 0,9 g/ml. The dosages below are illustrative assumptions, not any real formula.
- Bulgarian rose oil at 1% of the concentrate: 0.16 g × $12 750/kg ≈ $2.04.
- Indian jasmine absolute at 1%: 0.16 g × $3900/kg ≈ $0.62.
- Indonesian patchouli oil at 5%: 0,8 g × $79/kg ≈ $0.06.
- Orris butter at 0,5%: 0.08 g × 40 000 €–100 000/kg ≈ 3,20 €–8.00.
- Bulgarian rose oil, 1% of concentrate$2.04
- Indian jasmine absolute, 1%$0.62
- Indonesian patchouli oil, 5%$0.06
Assumes 18% concentrate, 0,9 g/ml and the dosages shown, which are illustrative. Orris butter at 0,5% would add 3,20 €–8.00, shown separately because its price is in euros. Prices: Ultra International, summer 2026; Première Peau.120
So even the rarest naturals add a few euros to a bottle. Most of the shelf price goes to brand, packaging, distribution and retail margin. Our explainer on why designer perfumes cost so much breaks down the rest, and our perfume pricing statistics track what bottles sell for.
What Scento customers choose
Scento is a curated European perfume retailer that sells authentic decants of the original perfumes, across more than 1000 perfumes and 27 European markets. In Scento order data for October 2025 to September 2026, 56% of decants sold were of perfumes whose 8 ml member price at Scento is 30 € or more. Niche houses made up 65% of decants from niche and designer houses. That fits the pattern above: buyers seek out houses known for rare materials, and 76% of decants sold were 2 ml vials, a way to try a perfume before committing to a larger size.
How we compiled this
We took every price on this page from the supplier report, central-bank figure, trade review, dealer listing or commentary named in its footnote, and checked each one on 8 October 2026. Prices are given in the currency and unit the source uses. Each one carries its date, because natural-material prices move with harvests.
- Ultra International prices are supplier market quotes by season. Ambergris prices are dealer retail listings, ambroxide prices are a supplier’s list prices, and the orris figure is industry commentary. None of these is an exchange price.
- “Scento analysis” means a calculation we made from the published prices: the rose and patchouli changes, the ambergris price per kilo and the per-bottle cost, whose dosages are illustrative.
- “Scento order data” comes from the Scento Fragrance Index: Scento’s own analysis of paid decant orders from October 2025 to September 2026, published as shares only, never order counts, unit counts or revenue. Cancelled, test and staff orders are excluded.

Odpowiedzi na twoje pytania
- What is the most expensive perfume ingredient?
- Oud (agarwood) oil is among the costliest traded materials: a 2022 CITES review cites USD 40,000–50,000 per litre. Industry commentary puts orris butter in the tens of thousands of euros per kilo. Musk deer are CITES-listed (Appendix I for the Himalayan populations, which bars commercial trade), so modern perfumes use synthetic musks.
- How much does rose oil cost per kg?
- Bulgarian rose oil, the benchmark, was quoted at USD 12,750 per kg in summer 2026 by supplier Ultra International, up from USD 11,000 in autumn 2024. Several thousand kilos of petals go into one kilo of oil, and spring frosts cut 2025 Bulgarian yields by 35–50%.
- Why did vanilla prices crash?
- Madagascar overplanted after prices topped USD 600 per kg in 2017–2019. Exports reached about 4,300 tonnes in the 2023/24 season against roughly 2,500 tonnes of global demand. The Central Bank of Madagascar recorded an average export price of USD 38 per kg in Q4 2025, down 40.2% in a year.
- How much does real ambergris cost?
- Dealers sell beach-cast ambergris at about USD 20–35 per gram depending on grade, which works out to roughly USD 20,000–35,000 per kilo; white, long-cured pieces cost most. Trade is banned in the US and Australia bans commercial export, so most perfumes use ambroxide, a synthetic sold at hundreds of dollars per kilo.
- Are most perfume ingredients synthetic?
- Yes. IFRA, the industry body, says about three-quarters of fragrance volume now comes from synthesis plants, with the rest from crops, resins and other naturals. Givaudan reported that 20% of the raw materials it bought for fragrances were natural. Synthetics bring consistency and replace banned animal materials.
- How much do the ingredients in a 100 ml perfume cost?
- Less than most people expect. A Scento calculation for an eau de parfum at 18% concentrate shows that 1% Bulgarian rose oil in the formula costs about USD 2 per bottle, and 5% patchouli about six cents. Brand, packaging, distribution and retail margin make up most of the shelf price.
- Why is oud so expensive?
- Oud resin forms only when Aquilaria trees are infected, wild trees are depleted, and every Aquilaria species is CITES-listed. Plantation oud is cheaper but rated lower in quality, so demand for wild material stays high. TRAFFIC found oil generally trading at USD 5,000–10,000 per kg, with pure grades up to USD 30,000.
