About Guerlain: what to know before you choose

LVMH counts “+1 100 olfactory creations since 1828” for the house. Its founder is Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, and LVMH’s page says “Thierry Wasser is the heir to an olfactory legacy of some 1100 fragrances”.² LVMH “acquired financial control of the family-owned company in late April” 1994, according to WWD.⁵ The house perfumers today are Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk.⁷

Knowing the house vocabulary makes the range easier to read. Guerlainade is the house signature, covered below. L’Art & La Matière is, Marie Claire says, the biggest grouping from the house, with 22 unique scents.⁸ Two of the picks below, Herbes Troublantes and Spiritueuse Double Vanille, belong to that line. Guerlain’s four collections

Guerlain’s own page on the art of fragrance sets out how the house organises its perfumes.⁷ It starts with the signature: “The inimitable Guerlinade has been the signature of Guerlain fragrance creations since 1921”, with vanilla, bergamot, tonka bean, iris, rose and jasmine. Shalimar is described there as “The first amber fragrance”.⁷ The four collections are:

Start with the note family you already enjoy, because Guerlain covers most of them.

Spiritueuse Double Vanille by Guerlain

Best for evening and vanilla. Angélique Noire by Guerlain

Best unisex niche. Angelica, pear, caraway and vanilla make an unusual, slightly green and sweet fragrance that does not read as masculine or feminine. Cuir Béluga by Guerlain

Which Guerlain to try first

If you only want one vial, match it to the occasion. Shalimar Eau de Parfum is the one to wear when you want a fragrance with history, and LVMH’s page describes the original as “created in 1925 the first oriental fragrance in history”.² Herbes Troublantes is the safest start for a clean, bright scent, which is probably why it leads the house at Scento.³ Spiritueuse Double Vanille and Cuir Béluga are the richer choices for colder months, while Aqua Allegoria Forte Mandarine Basilic is the one to reach for when the weather warms up.

Vintage versus modern Guerlain

Guerlain has been making perfume since 1828, so older bottles are a topic in themselves. Readers often ask whether an older Shalimar smells different from the current one. What a Guerlain costs to try

Decants cost more per ml than a full bottle. What they change is the price of finding out. A 2 ml Shalimar Eau de Parfum is 7,90 €, against 153,00 € for Guerlain’s 90 ml bottle in France.⁴ A 2 ml Spiritueuse Double Vanille is 16,90 €, against 335,00 € for 100 ml in Spain.¹⁰ If you already know you love a scent, a full bottle is the better route per ml. If you are still deciding, a vial lets you wear it for several days first.

Of the five, L’Homme Idéal L’Intense has the lowest official price per ml, at 1,29 €, and the lowest 2 ml entry price at Scento, at 6,90 €.
