How we chose these colognes
We sorted the picks by occasion rather than into a league table, because the same bottle that suits a hot afternoon can feel wrong in a winter meeting room. Five things decided each place: how fresh it smells, how well it fits a real situation, how it copes with warm weather, its concentration, and a balance of designer and niche houses. No pick is crowned best, and no shop is placed first.
The list mixes both worlds on purpose. In Scento’s orders, niche houses account for 65% of paid decant units, with Scento’s own house perfumes excluded, so a guide made only of designer names would not reflect what people actually try. All 13 perfumes were available as decants at Scento on 30 October 2026.
What cologne means
In contemporary American English, “cologne” has become a generic term for perfumes marketed toward men.2 DermNet NZ makes the same point: strictly, cologne refers to eau de cologne, but the word is in common use for any fragrance worn by a man.3 Eau de cologne itself goes back to Johann Maria Farina, who created it in Cologne, Germany, in 1709.2 It was originally made from rosemary and citrus essences dissolved in wine.1
The strengths differ. DermNet NZ puts eau de cologne at a 2–4% concentration of fragrance, lasting about 2 hours. Eau de toilette is 5–15%, lasts 2 to 3 hours and is often used for daywear, while eau de parfum is 15–20%.3 Herz gives eau de cologne as roughly 2–5%.1 The Perfume Shop describes eau de cologne as ideal for warmer climates or for those who like to smell fresh but not overly fragranced.4 For the full scale, see our perfume concentrations chart.

Best colognes for the office
An office scent should be noticed by the person who sits next to you only when they lean in. These three are dry, citrus or mineral rather than sweet. For more, read our guide to office perfumes for men.
Terre d’Hermès by Hermès
Jean-Claude Ellena created Terre d’Hermès in 2006, and Hermès describes it as a mineral, woody fragrance that combines the strength of cedar and the radiance of grapefruit with a vibrant touch of flint.5 It is an eau de toilette5 and its dry, stony character sits quietly at a desk. It ranks 10th among masculine perfumes in Scento’s European orders, October 2025 – September 2026.
Terre d’Hermès as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)
Prada L’Homme by Prada
Prada L’Homme combines iris and amber with neroli, geranium and patchouli, and was composed by Daniela Andrier of Givaudan.6 It launched in 20166 and is an eau de toilette.7 Prada Beauty places it in the aromatic fougère family and calls it an excellent transition scent for spring, summer and fall,7 which makes it a sensible all-year choice for work. It ranks 15th among masculine perfumes in Scento’s European orders in the same period.
Prada L’Homme as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)
Colonia by Acqua di Parma
Colonia was created in 1916 as an eau de cologne, the style the whole category is named after.8 Its top notes are lemon, sweet orange and Calabrian bergamot, its heart lavender, rose, verbena and rosemary, and its base vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli.8 It is the lightest and most traditional of the three, suited to a man who wants to smell clean rather than noticeable.

Best colognes for summer and heat
Heat and humidity make heavy scents cloying, so the best warm-weather colognes lean on citrus, water and tea. For a wider selection, see our guide to hot-weather perfumes for Mediterranean summers.
Acqua di Giò by Giorgio Armani
Armani released Acqua di Giò in 1996, composed by the perfumer Alberto Morillas.9 The original eau de toilette is an aquatic composition built on Calabrian bergamot, neroli, citrus and rosemary, and it was inducted into the Fragrance Foundation’s Hall of Fame in 2012.9 It is a straightforward choice for a hot day.
Acqua di Giò as a 2 ml decant (€5.90)
Imagination by Louis Vuitton
Imagination launched in 2021 as a citrus aromatic. Its opening is citron, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange, the heart neroli, ginger and cinnamon, and the base black tea, ambroxan, guaiac wood and olibanum.10 Louis Vuitton says perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud explored the art of contrast through the unprecedented combination of amber and black tea, in a five-year-long creative process.11 It is the most-bought masculine perfume in Scento’s European orders, and the most-bought perfume of any style, from October 2025 to September 2026.
Imagination as a 2 ml decant (€14.90)
Silver Mountain Water by Creed
Silver Mountain Water made its debut in 1995 as an eau de parfum.12 It opens with a bright burst of bergamot and blackcurrant, with a heart of soothing tea over a glacial ozonic accord; the base is musk and sandalwood.12 The cool, tea-led heart is what makes it read as fresh even at eau de parfum strength.

Best fresh colognes for a date night
A date calls for a little more shape than an office scent, but still nothing that arrives before you do. Our guide to first-date perfumes for men covers more options.
Y Eau de Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent
Y Eau de Parfum launched in 2018 and was created by Dominique Ropion and Claire Liégent.13 Its opening is apple, ginger and bergamot, its heart sage, juniper and geranium, and its base amberwood, tonka, cedar, vetiver and olibanum.13 YSL Beauty calls it a white and dark fougère with a fresh sage essence and a crispy geranium absolute.14 The apple and sage keep it bright while the woods give it warmth after dark.
Y Eau de Parfum as a 2 ml decant (€7.90)
Valentino Uomo Born in Roma by Valentino
Valentino describes the eau de toilette as a woody vetiver aromatic fragrance, with a cool vibrating facet of mineral salt and spicy ginger twisting the classic signature of aromatic sage and smoked vetiver; the top note is violet leaf absolute.15 It launched in 2019 and was created by Antoine Maisondieu and Guillaume Flavigny.16 The smoky vetiver gives it more character than most fresh scents without making it heavy.
Valentino Uomo Born in Roma as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)
Sauvage by Dior
Dior describes the Sauvage Eau de Toilette as the original and lightest interpretation of the collection, a fresh, citrus-driven men’s cologne for everyday and warmer-season wear, with juicy Calabrian bergamot, spicy Sichuan pepper and the raw trail of ambery marine wood.17 It was released in 2015 and composed by François Demachy.18 It ranks 17th among masculine perfumes in Scento’s European orders, October 2025 – September 2026.
Sauvage as a 2 ml decant (€7.90)
Best colognes for the gym and casual days
For training and weekends, the aim is a clean, light scent that does not turn sticky with sweat. Our gym perfume guide goes deeper.
Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue by Versace
Versace lists the opening of Dylan Blue as water notes, fig leaves, bergamot and grapefruit.19 Beneath that are violet leaves, black pepper, patchouli and papyrus, then musk, tonka, saffron and incense.19 WWD described it as a fougère with a woody aroma when it was introduced exclusively at Harrods on 26 July 2016.20 The watery, fruity opening suits a changing room as well as a café.
Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)
Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert by Bvlgari
Jean-Claude Ellena signed this fragrance in 1992, and Bvlgari calls it its very first fragrance for men and women, a fresh luxury eau de cologne.21 The accord is Italian bergamot with green tea, pepper, cedar wood, beeswax and white musk.21 It is the gentlest pick in this guide, meant for easy, unhurried days.
Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert as a 2 ml decant (€5.90)
Best colognes to give as a gift
A gift needs a scent with broad appeal that its owner is unlikely to have already. These two sit at opposite ends: one of the best-known names in men’s perfumery and the second most-bought masculine perfume in Scento’s orders, the other a niche climber. See also our guides to perfume gifts for a boyfriend and the best Creed perfumes for men.
Aventus by Creed
Creed presents Aventus as an eau de parfum uniting fresh Calabrian bergamot, smoky birch and an iconic pineapple accord.22 The notes are Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian lemon and blackcurrant leaf, then pineapple accord, pink pepper and jasmine, then birch, patchouli and musk.22 Creed says it launched in 2010.23 It ranks 2nd among masculine perfumes, and 2nd across all styles, in Scento’s European orders, October 2025 – September 2026.
Aventus as a 2 ml decant (€9.95)
Hacivat by Nishane
Hacivat is a chypre launched in 2017, with a nose of Jorge Lee.24 It opens with pineapple, grapefruit and bergamot, moves to cedar, patchouli and jasmine, and rests on oakmoss and woody notes.24 One retailer lists it as an extrait de parfum.25 It ranks 9th among masculine perfumes in Scento’s European orders, and it is climbing: it moved from 26th in the second quarter of 2026 to 19th in the third, among perfumes ranked in the top 50 in both quarters.
Hacivat as a 2 ml decant (€10.90)
How to test a cologne before buying a bottle
A scent can change over several hours as the top notes fade, so a paper strip in a shop says little. Spray it on skin and wear it for a full day before deciding. The 2 ml size makes this easy: it accounts for 76% of paid decant units in Scento’s orders, October 2025 – September 2026. Scento sells more than 1,000 fragrances in 2 ml, 5 ml and 8 ml decants, plus 30 ml.
If you later decide you want a stronger trail than these fresh day-wear picks give, our guide to long-lasting perfumes and colognes for men covers that.
How we compiled this
Notes, launch years and concentrations come from the houses’ own pages where they publish them, supplemented by Fragrantica for launch years and perfumers, WWD and the references listed below. All sources were read on 30 October 2026. Houses publish different note lists in different markets, so we used one list per perfume. Rankings come from Scento’s analysis of its own paid decant orders placed across Europe between October 2025 and September 2026, shown as ranks and shares only. Availability and retail 2 ml prices were checked in Scento’s catalogue on 30 October 2026.

Your questions, answered
- What is the best cologne for men?
- There is no single best cologne; the right one depends on the occasion, the climate, the concentration and how you test it. In Scento's European orders from October 2025 to September 2026, Imagination and Aventus are the two most-bought masculine perfumes, which is a useful guide to what people choose, not a verdict.
- Is cologne the same as eau de cologne?
- Not exactly. In American English, cologne has become a generic term for perfumes marketed toward men, according to Wikipedia, and DermNet NZ says it is used for any fragrance worn by a male. Eau de cologne itself is a light concentration, roughly 2–5% aromatic compounds according to Herz.
- Is eau de toilette or eau de parfum better for day wear?
- Eau de toilette is the usual choice. DermNet NZ gives it 5–15% fragrance, 2 to 3 hours of wear, and says it is often used for daywear. Eau de parfum is stronger at 15–20%, according to DermNet NZ, though some fresh eau de parfum picks work well by day.
- Which cologne is best for the office?
- Terre d'Hermès, Prada L'Homme and Colonia are the three office picks here. Hermès describes Terre d'Hermès as mineral and woody, with grapefruit, cedar and flint. Prada L'Homme pairs iris and amber with neroli, while Acqua di Parma says Colonia is built on lemon, orange and bergamot.
- Which cologne is best for summer heat?
- Choose a bright, light scent. The Perfume Shop says eau de cologne, at 2–4% fragrance, is ideal for warmer climates, and our summer picks are Acqua di Giò, Imagination and Silver Mountain Water, all built on bergamot, aquatic, tea or citrus notes.
- Which fresh cologne works for a date?
- Yves Saint Laurent Y Eau de Parfum, Valentino Uomo Born in Roma and Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette are the date-night picks. Each opens bright, with bergamot, ginger or violet leaf, and then adds warmth from sage, vetiver, Sichuan pepper or amberwood, so they feel fresh without being thin.
- Where did eau de cologne come from?
- According to Wikipedia, Johann Maria Farina created eau de cologne in Cologne, Germany, in 1709. Herz writes that it was originally made from rosemary and citrus essences dissolved in wine, which explains why citrus and herbal notes still define the style.
- How should I try a cologne before buying?
- Wear it on skin for a full day, because a fragrance changes as it settles. A 2 ml decant is enough for that, and 2 ml accounts for 76% of paid decant units in Scento's orders between October 2025 and September 2026.
