There is no single best patchouli perfume, because the note behaves differently depending on what surrounds it. For women, Portrait of a Lady suits a rose chypre, Angel or Scandal a gourmand, and Signorina or Kirke a softer wear. These 12 picks are grouped by style, each as a 2 ml decant from €6.90.
- Pick by how the patchouli is used: centre stage, rose chypre, gourmand, floral-amber or clean.
- Women’s picks come first and fill most of the list; three picks suit men or any wearer.
- 2 ml decants on this list cost €6.90 to €15.90, so you can test the note before buying a bottle.
- Patchouli oil reached US$150 per kg in autumn 2026, up from US$79 the season before.

What patchouli smells like in perfume
A 1990 study classified patchoulol and norpatchoulenol by three key odour descriptors: wood, earth and camphor.5 Patchoulol is the main constituent of the oil,3 and a 2024 paper, citing earlier work, puts it at 30–40% in theory.6 A 2017 review counted 72 constituents convincingly identified in the oil and another 58 tentatively, and found that the three molecules behind its earthy-mouldy note (patchoulol, norpatchoulenol and nortetracyclopatchoulol) cannot alone account for the richness of its odour.3
That complexity is why the same note reads so differently from one perfume to the next. Pair it with rose and it turns chypre. Pair it with praline or honey and it turns gourmand. Pair it with lavender and musk and it turns clean. For the full scent profile and how the oil is made, read our explainer on patchouli in perfume, or browse every perfume on the patchouli note page.
How we chose
Four criteria decided the list. The maker’s own page must name patchouli. The 12 must cover different styles, not repeat one. Each must be stocked and purchasable today. And each needs a 2 ml price, so a first sniff costs little. Where a maker page showed no notes, we say which secondary source we used.
Scento’s own order data adds context, not a ranking. Two picks on this list sit in the top 10 most-bought feminine perfumes across Europe (Portrait of a Lady at #7 and Kirke at #8, Oct 2025 – Sep 2026), and both carry patchouli in their notes, according to Scento’s analysis of the Fragrance Index and catalogue notes.
Patchouli at the centre
Patchouli Paris by Guerlain
Guerlain places this in its L’Art & La Matière line, by perfumer Delphine Jelk. The house describes a “disinhibited patchouli” that “puts on a show and blazes upon contact with powdery and woody iris”, with aldehydes and musks, and an “amber-toned sillage of vanilla, ambergris accord and musk”.7 It suits anyone who wants the note itself as the point, not a supporting player.

Rose and chypre patchouli perfumes for women
Here patchouli is the dark floor under a flower. It gives rose and oakmoss the depth that makes a chypre.
Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle
Dominique Ropion’s floral chypre lists raspberry, cumin and pink pepper on top, rose in the middle, and patchouli, labdanum and incense in the base.8 Frederic Malle says it won the 2026 Fragrance Foundation Hall of Fame Award, more than fifteen years after its creation.8 It is #7 among the most-bought feminine perfumes across Europe at Scento (Oct 2025 – Sep 2026). More rose perfumes are in our niche rose guide.
Portrait of a Lady as a 2 ml decant (€15.90)
Si by Giorgio Armani
Armani writes it Sì. The Eau de Parfum features freesia and Rose de Mai absolute, and the house says “notes of Oakmoss and Patchouli softly define this fragrance as a captivating modern chypre”.9 Those notes are the Eau de Parfum’s, not the Intense version’s. It is a polished, everyday chypre.
Signorina by Salvatore Ferragamo
Fragrantica lists pink pepper and black currant on top, rose, peony and jasmine in the middle, and panacotta, musk and patchouli in the base. It gives the launch year as 2011.10 Ferragamo’s own page showed no notes, so treat this as a secondary source. The patchouli here sits under sweetness, which makes it an easy first step.
Signorina as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)
Gourmand patchouli
Sweet notes soften patchouli’s earthy edge. The result is warm and edible without losing its depth.
Angel by Mugler
Mugler lists Calabrian bergamot, praline and patchouli leaf as key notes, over “a powerful base of patchouli leaf warmed up by the ambery inflections of vanilla absolute”.4 In 1992 the house unveiled “an intoxicating scent without flowers”, and Mugler says Angel “initiates a new genre, the gourmand”.4 It was crafted by Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chirin.4 Wear it when you want a perfume that announces itself.
Angel as a 2 ml decant (€7.90)
Scandal by Jean Paul Gaultier
Gaultier calls it a gourmand chypre and lists gardenia, honey and patchouli. The house describes “sensual gardenia and the power of patchouli jostled by sweet, gourmand honey”.11 It is the pick for readers who like Angel’s sweetness but want a floral, honeyed turn.
Scandal as a 2 ml decant (€7.90)
Black Orchid by Tom Ford
Tom Ford lists black truffle, ylang ylang, black orchid, black plum, rum absolute and patchouli, with “woody patchouli and creamy vanilla” wrapping the orchid in rich warmth.12 A retailer blog gives its launch as 2006.13 It is dark and evening-leaning. If you already know it, see our guide to alternatives to Black Orchid.

Floral and fruity patchouli
Flowerbomb by Viktor&Rolf
Introduced in 2005, it was created by Olivier Polge, Carlos Benaim, Domitille Michalon Bertier and Dominique Ropion. Peony opens it, Centifolia rose forms the heart, and the base holds “soft freesia, warm amber, patchouli and creamy vanilla”.14 Patchouli here gives the bouquet weight. For similar floral styles, see our Flowerbomb floral alternatives.
Flowerbomb as a 2 ml decant (€10.90)
Kirke by Tiziana Terenzi
Scento’s catalogue describes passionfruit, peach and raspberry, with lily-of-the-valley in the heart. The base blends musk, vanilla and patchouli.15 It is #8 among the most-bought feminine perfumes across Europe at Scento (Oct 2025 – Sep 2026), and shares the lowest 2 ml price on the list.
Kirke as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)
Fresh, clean patchouli and picks for men
These three keep patchouli but pair it with lavender, citrus or cedarwood. From their listed notes they read lighter than the gourmands, though that is our reasoning from the notes, not a measurement. Patchouli is “an indispensable and difficult to replace constituent of many women’s and men’s fragrances”, the 2017 review notes.3
Rehab by Initio Parfums Privés
Initio lists bergamot, lavender, cedarwood, patchouli, sandalwood, hedione and musk, and says all its fragrances are unisex.16 It is the cleanest take here: patchouli among lavender and musk.
Rehab as a 2 ml decant (€9.95)
Hacivat by Nishane
Nishane lists bergamot, pineapple and grapefruit on top, jasmine, patchouli and cedarwood in the heart, and clearwood, oakmoss and dry timberwood in the base. It labels it citrus, chypre and woody, an Extrait de Parfum.17 It is #9 among the most-bought masculine perfumes across Europe at Scento (Oct 2025 – Sep 2026).
Hacivat as a 2 ml decant (€10.90)
Guilty Pour Homme by Gucci
Gucci opens with pink pepper and lemon, moves through orange blossom, neroli and lavender, and ends on “base notes of Patchouli”, with the dry-down intensified by “the masculine richness of Cedarwood”.18 It shows patchouli as a classic men’s base.

Where patchouli comes from and why the price jumped in 2026
Patchouli oil is obtained by steam distillation or hydrodistillation of the dried leaves of Pogostemon cablin, a plant of the Lamiaceae (mint) family.3 Indonesia makes about 90% of the world’s 1,200–1,300 tonnes a year, according to a 2017 review.3 A 2024 review puts Indonesia’s share at 80%, from a 2009 figure, with Sulawesi at 70% of output, Sumatra 25% and Java 5%.19 Taken together, Indonesia supplies roughly 80–90% of the world’s patchouli oil.
The price has moved sharply. Ultra International’s Summer 2026 market report gives US$79 per kg, with output from Sulawesi and Sumatra and developing areas in Kalimantan.2 Its Autumn 2026 report gives US$150 per kg and says prices keep “climbing relentlessly”, with September rainfall relevant to leaf drying and fermentation.1 By our arithmetic that is a rise of about 90% in one season. For context, our perfume ingredient prices guide reports that the price fell from $200–225 per kg in autumn 2024 to $79 in summer 2026, so the 2026 move roughly doubles the price, though it remains below the autumn 2024 level.20 The 2017 review, by contrast, cited US$61–63 per kg for good quality oil, and said the price had at times been as high as $150 per kg.3
Ultra also notes that customers increasingly prioritise pesticide compliance, traceability and responsible sourcing.1 We make no prediction about perfume prices from these figures.
How we compiled this
We read every source on 22 October 2026. Scent notes come from each maker’s own page, except where the table names Fragrantica, a retailer blog or the Scento catalogue. Prices are Scento retail for 2 ml decants, checked live the same day for stock and availability. Ranks come from the Scento Fragrance Index, which covers paid decant units across Europe from October 2025 to September 2026. The patchouli market figures come from Ultra International reports and two published reviews.
Some pages could not be opened directly, so we read the Ultra reports and the 2017 review through a copy of the publisher page. Our most popular perfumes for women list shows where Portrait of a Lady and Kirke sit overall.

Your questions, answered
- What is the best patchouli perfume for women?
- It depends on style, so we do not crown one. For a rose chypre, Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle is #7 among the most-bought feminine perfumes at Scento (Oct 2025 – Sep 2026). For a gourmand, try Angel by Mugler or Scandal by Jean Paul Gaultier. For something softer, Signorina by Salvatore Ferragamo or Kirke by Tiziana Terenzi, which is #8 feminine.
- What does patchouli smell like?
- A 1990 study classified patchouli's key odour descriptors as wood, earth and camphor. A 2017 review adds that the earthy-mouldy note comes from patchoulol, norpatchoulenol and nortetracyclopatchoulol, but that they alone cannot account for the oil's richness. Pairing changes it: rose gives a chypre, praline or honey a gourmand, lavender and musk a cleaner result.
- Is patchouli feminine or masculine?
- Both. A 2017 review calls patchouli oil an indispensable and difficult to replace constituent of many women's and men's fragrances. Mugler's Angel uses patchouli leaf as a base in a women's perfume, while Gucci lists patchouli among the base notes of Guilty Pour Homme, a men's fragrance.
- Which patchouli perfume isn't too heavy?
- Judging by their listed notes, three read lighter than the gourmands. Initio's Rehab pairs patchouli with bergamot, lavender, cedarwood and musk. Nishane's Hacivat opens with bergamot, pineapple and grapefruit. Signorina by Ferragamo sits under rose, peony and jasmine. That is reasoning from the notes, not a measurement, so try a 2 ml decant first.
- Where does patchouli come from?
- Mostly Indonesia. A 2017 review puts Indonesia at about 90% of the world's patchouli oil, and a 2024 review at 80%, so roughly 80–90% overall. Ultra International names Sulawesi and Sumatra as the established growing areas. The oil is distilled from the dried leaves of Pogostemon cablin, a plant of the Lamiaceae (mint) family.
- Why is patchouli oil more expensive in 2026?
- Ultra International's market reports give Indonesian patchouli oil at US$79 per kg in summer 2026 and US$150 per kg in autumn 2026, a rise of about 90% in one season by our arithmetic. Ultra says prices are "climbing relentlessly" and notes that September rainfall matters for leaf drying and fermentation.
- What was the first gourmand patchouli perfume?
- Mugler says Angel, unveiled in 1992, "initiates a new genre, the gourmand". The house lists Calabrian bergamot, praline and patchouli leaf as key notes, over a base of patchouli leaf warmed by vanilla absolute. Angel was crafted by Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chirin. We attribute the claim to Mugler rather than stating it as fact.
- Can I try a patchouli perfume before buying a bottle?
- Yes. Scento sells these perfumes as 2 ml decants, hand-poured from original bottles. On this list the 2 ml price runs from €6.90 (Signorina and Kirke) to €15.90 (Portrait of a Lady), read on 22 October 2026. That lets you test how patchouli sits on your skin before committing to a full bottle.
