Louis Vuitton Imagination is a citrus, tea and amber Eau de Parfum by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, launched in June 2021.1 It is a clean, slightly soapy scent built to please rather than surprise: bright bergamot and orange, then ginger and cinnamon, then dry black tea over Ambroxan.2 Wearers report roughly 7 to 9 hours on skin.2
In short
- Louis Vuitton itself highlights only three key notes: amber, black tea and bergamot.3 Fragrantica lists ten notes in total.2
- Wear-time reports range from about 7 to 9 hours, and some wearers say longer, with traces left on clothing for days.2
- Fragrantica lists it for men, yet wearers disagree on whether it reads masculine, unisex or slightly feminine.2
- It suits people who like soapy, clean freshness. It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants a bold signature, since one critical reviewer finds the drydown “boring”.4

The notes, and what Louis Vuitton says about them
We use Fragrantica’s pyramid as the reference, because it is the most complete.2
- Top: citron, Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian orange.
- Heart: Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger, Ceylon cinnamon.
- Base: Chinese black tea, Ambroxan, guaiac wood, olibanum.
Fragrantica’s main accords, in order, are citrus, fresh spicy, green, fresh and aromatic.2
Sources do not agree on the top. The 2021 launch article lists Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian orange and lemon,1 while Parfumo lists a “Sicilian cedar” in the citron slot.6 Louis Vuitton itself keeps it simple and names three key notes: amber, black tea and bergamot.3 For the bright opening, our guide to bergamot in perfume explains why Italian citrus so often leads a fragrance.
The Ambroxan overdose
The amber here is not a resin accord. Louis Vuitton describes an overdose of Ambrox, which it calls the white gold of perfumery, used to reinvent the amber accord for a sensual, contemporary masculinity.3 Ambrox is a molecule present in its natural state in ambergris.5 Belletrud says: “For five years, I’d been dreaming of revealing the beauty of ambergris and expressing the quintessence of its amber note in a way that’s of-the-moment and devoid of nostalgia”.5 If you want to know what that molecule does on skin, our Ambroxan guide covers it, and Imagination is a clear example of an Ambrox-heavy base.
Tea, ginger and cinnamon
The launch article says the ginger from Nigeria and the cinnamon from Ceylon are CO2-extracted, as is the black tea from China.1 A&E Magazine describes that tea as a rare and precious black tea with notes of grass, straw and a slightly smoky edge.5 Belletrud adds: “The tea evokes the magic of the East, an imaginary scene of caravans. It carries within it the spirit of travel”.5
One small detail: the ingredient list on Louis Vuitton’s page includes the colourants CI 42090, CI 47005 and CI 60730, so the liquid is tinted.3
How it wears, from first spray to drydown
The reports line up well on the shape of the scent, even when they disagree on its charm.
The opening. A Fragrantica member describes it as “very soapy refreshing with ginger, bergamote and orange followed by tea note with neroli”.2 Fragrantica’s reviewer Eddie Bulliqi calls it “a spicy citrus tea composition” and says “Ginger peaks through first, carrying its characteristic fire and sparkle”.8
The first hour. Another member writes: “Citruses in the opening, a bit floral and softly soapy in the dry down, and after an hour or so some of those tea and green notes come through strongly.”2 A Parfumo reviewer finds that the tea reads more like fresh green tea than black, and calls the result “Fresh and herbaceous of the cleanest and most transparent quality.”4 Bulliqi sees chai in the middle of the scent: the combination of neroli, cinnamon, tea and Ambroxan “imitates the creamy and reassuring mouthfeel of chai tea – rich, peppery and opaque.”8
The drydown. One member says: “As it dries down, the juiciness gradually diminishes without disappearing, while the warmer amber and cinnamon become more apparent.”2 Another finds it “bit smoky and sweet ambery” and “linear till the end”.2 A third sums the whole arc up as “just great citrus with a creamy tea afterwards”.2
Bulliqi’s verdict on the design is that it is “an exercise in lightening spice for everyday wear through translucent and watercolour effects.”8
Longevity and sillage
Wear time is the most variable part of the story. The table sets the reports side by side without averaging them.
| Source | What they report |
|---|---|
| Fragrantica member A | 8 hours with moderate projection 2 |
| Fragrantica member B | Around 7 hours 2 |
| Fragrantica member C | About 9 hours in total: 2 hours of strong projection, 3-4 hours of moderate projection, then a skin scent 2 |
| Fragrantica member D | 7+ hours on skin, with traces remaining on clothing for days 2 |
| Parfumo reviewer, 2022 | 7 to 8 hours, “in a classy manner” 4 |
| Parfumo reviewer | Strong sillage in the first hours, longevity in the double-digit hour range 4 |
The 2022 Parfumo reviewer puts the character of that performance well: it was “to tell you it´s there but not to disturb you”.4 The other Parfumo reviewer says the longevity does not become intrusive.4 Skin, weather and the number of sprays all move these figures, so treat them as a range rather than a promise.
Seasons and occasions
The accords point to warm weather: citrus, fresh spicy and green lead the list.2 Launch coverage in The Glass Magazine presented it as a summer fragrance, and its powder-blue bottle fits that mood.7 Reviewers also treat it as an everyday scent. Bulliqi writes about “everyday wear”,8 and a critical Parfumo reviewer says no one would find it offensive or attention-grabbing.4 In our view, that makes it an easy choice for an office or a long day among other people.
As an opinion rather than a finding: the warmer tea and amber drydown carry it into cooler months too, where the amber has more room to show.
Who it suits, and who should skip it
It suits
- People who enjoy soapy, clean fresh scents. One Parfumo reviewer calls it a “soapy fresh perfume with outstanding performance” and adds: “Only for lovers of soapy fragrances.”4
- Wearers who want something inoffensive and polished for daily use.4
- Anyone who likes ginger and tea in a spicy citrus composition.8
Skip it if
- You want a bold or animalic signature. Imagination is built around transparency.8
- You find laundry-style freshness dull. The critical Parfumo review says that after 30 minutes or so it dries down to “some rather boring, pleasant, clean smell reminiscent of dryer sheets or fabric softener.”4
- You are not already drawn to the smell. Reporting what users say about the house, Bulliqi notes that you “really have to be in love with the smell”.8
Men, women or both
Fragrantica and Parfumo list Imagination for men,2 ,6 and Scento’s catalogue labels it masculine. Wearers do not agree. One calls it “Perfectly unisex” and “an incredibly soft, smooth fragrance”. Another finds that it “honestly leans a touch feminine once it sat on my skin for a while”. A third says it still smells “unmistakably masculine rather than truly unisex”.2 The practical answer is to wear it if you like it.
Where it sits in the Louis Vuitton line
Imagination joined the masculine line of Les Parfums Louis Vuitton, which started in 2018, as its seventh edition for men.1 The house has other ginger and citrus perfumes, each with its own notes:
- L’Immensité, an Oriental Spicy perfume from 2018 with grapefruit, bergamot and ginger on top, rosemary, sage, geranium and water notes in the heart, and amber, Ambroxan and labdanum underneath.9
- Symphony, a citrus perfume for women and men from 2021, built on bergamot, grapefruit and ginger.10
- Météore, a Citrus Aromatic for men from 2020: Calabrian bergamot, mandarin and Sicilian orange, then Tunisian neroli with pepper, pink pepper, nutmeg and cardamom, and Java vetiver.11
- Afternoon Swim, a citrus perfume from 2019 for women and men with Sicilian orange, mandarin, bergamot, ambergris and ginger.12
For something quite different from the same house, there are three directions. Pacific Chill is an Aromatic Fruity from 2023 with orange, citron, lemon, mint, black currant and coriander, then apricot, basil, May rose and carrot seeds, over fig, ambrette and dates.13 Ombre Nomade is an Oriental Woody built on oud, rose, raspberry, saffron, amberwood, benzoin, birch, incense and geranium,14 and Louis Vuitton describes the oud as blended with benzoin, raspberry and incense.15 Attrape-Rêves, from 2018, centres on an elegant bouquet of peonies and the intensity of cocoa notes, in Louis Vuitton’s words.15 ,16
Louis Vuitton is the top house on Scento by units bought, with a 9.5% share (Oct 2025 — Sep 2026). Five of Scento’s 25 most-bought perfumes across Europe come from the house: Imagination at #1, Ombre Nomade at #4, Pacific Chill at #7, Symphony at #15 and Afternoon Swim at #24. For the wider range, see our guide to the best Louis Vuitton perfumes, the Les Sables Roses review and the Louis Vuitton brand page. Special editions
Monogram Imagination, launched in 2026, is a limited collector’s edition made for the 130th anniversary of the house’s Monogram motif. The scent follows the structure of the original, and the edition is distinguished by a specially designed, signed bottle.17 Louis Vuitton Singapore also notes that Imagination and Attrape-Rêves are reimagined for the Louis Vuitton x Murakami re-edition collection.18

We read every source listed below on 30 October 2026: Louis Vuitton’s own pages, launch coverage from 2021, Fragrantica and Parfumo, and the notes pages of the sister perfumes. Where sources differ, we say so and use Fragrantica’s pyramid as the reference. Wearer comments are individual experiences, attributed by platform and never by name. Your questions, answered
- How does Louis Vuitton Imagination smell?
- Fragrantica's pyramid opens on citron, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange. Ginger and cinnamon sit beside Tunisian neroli in the heart, then dry black tea rests over Ambroxan. Wearers often call it soapy and clean, and Fragrantica's reviewer Eddie Bulliqi described it as a spicy citrus tea composition with the feel of chai.
- What are the notes of Imagination?
- Fragrantica lists citron, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange at the top, Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger and Ceylon cinnamon in the heart, and Chinese black tea, Ambroxan, guaiac wood and olibanum in the base. Louis Vuitton itself highlights only three key notes: amber, black tea and bergamot.
- How long does Imagination last?
- Reports vary. Fragrantica members describe around 7 hours, 7+ hours, 8 hours and about 9 hours in total, and one says traces remain on clothing for days. Parfumo reviewers report 7 to 8 hours in one case and double-digit hours in another. Skin, weather and the number of sprays all change the result.
- Is Imagination for men or unisex?
- Fragrantica and Parfumo both list it for men, and Scento's catalogue labels it masculine. Wearers disagree: one Fragrantica member calls it perfectly unisex, another finds it unmistakably masculine rather than truly unisex, and a third says it leans a touch feminine once it has sat on the skin.
- When should you wear Imagination?
- Its accords are citrus, fresh spicy and green, and The Glass Magazine framed it as a summer fragrance at launch. Fragrantica's Eddie Bulliqi describes it as suited to everyday wear. In our view the tea and amber drydown also carries it into cooler months, but that is opinion rather than a finding.
- Who made Imagination and when?
- Jacques Cavallier Belletrud created it at his studio, Les Fontaines Parfumées, in Grasse. Fragrantica reports that it launched in June 2021 and is the seventh edition in the masculine line of Les Parfums Louis Vuitton, which started in 2018. A&E Magazine also calls it the house's seventh fragrance for men.
- Is the Imagination bottle refillable?
- Yes. The Glass Magazine reports that the powder-blue bottle can be refilled at any Louis Vuitton boutique equipped with the house's perfume fountains, and personalised free of charge with a number or initials. Louis Vuitton's Swiss site also lists a travel spray set with a travel flacon and four 7.5 ml refills.
- How popular is Imagination?
- Ranked by units bought on Scento between October 2025 and September 2026, Imagination is the most-bought perfume across Europe, and also the top-ranked masculine perfume. It is #1 in Germany, Italy, France and Greece, and #2 in Romania, according to the Scento Fragrance Index.
