Safran Secret at a glance
Safran Secret is the first extrait de parfum in Maison Crivelli’s Olfactory Mysteries collection6. As a composition it is not new: it was previously sold as Ingredients 07/2012, an exclusive for a beauty boutique in Prague, and it launched internationally in 20252. Parfumo dates the earlier release to 2022 under that name7.

You can find it on Scento as Safran Secret by Maison Crivelli, and the rest of the line sits on the Maison Crivelli brand page.

The secret-notes idea, and what the label still tells you
Maison Crivelli is direct about the missing pyramid. Its page says: “Contrary to the classic approach to perfumery, the ingredients used in the Safran Secret formula are not revealed, allowing you to discover the creation from a personal perspective.”1 The story it tells is of Thibaud Crivelli coming across fields of saffron wrapped in thick fog, and the composition is built around the contrast between soft, comforting, spicy saffron and intense, warm, woody notes1.
Fragrantica’s listing fills the gap with a three-step pyramid: spices on top, saffron in the middle and blonde woods in the base4. Treat that as a database listing rather than a house statement. The same page lists the main accords as warm spicy, metallic, leather, tobacco and earthy4.
What reviewers perceive goes further. Fragrantica’s launch coverage describes a first impression that is spicy, almost camphor-like, suggesting cardamom, followed by hints of juniper berries, menthol and aniseed, and later a hint of myrrh beside woody, slightly zesty incense2. Those are impressions, not declared notes.
There is one hard clue. The legally required ingredient list on the house’s page names cedarwood (Juniperus Virginiana oil), patchouli, cinnamon bark, clove and lavender oils, alongside vanillin, coumarin and camphor1. An ingredient list shows what is in the bottle, not in what proportion, so it is not a pyramid. It does sit comfortably with the camphor, woody and spicy reads above.
Who What Wear’s award coverage makes the same point: “Whilst the notes remain a secret, the scent is spicy, intense and utterly unique.”5 Beauty editor Eleanor Vousden, one of its judges, said: “To me, it feels very smooth and woodsy, lightly spicy and smoky but not overpowering, and shrouded me in a cosy haze of warmth throughout the day.”5
How it wears: opening, heart and drydown
No two skins read a perfume identically, so the arc below combines two sources and attributes each impression.
Opening, the first 30 minutes
One review site calls the opening “dry and peppery rather than sweet”3. Fragrantica describes it as green and peppy before a herbaceous turn. The saffron does not flare up with its familiar dazzling, leathery intensity, and instead “settles in gently, refreshed by a medicinal twist”2.
Heart, one to two hours in
This is where saffron takes full control, according to the same review site, and leather and pipe-tobacco nuances that wearers report begin to surface3. Those impressions line up with the leather and tobacco accords on Fragrantica’s listing4. A Fragrantica feature describes the result as saffron “in warm metal tones”, a more comfortable, winter-leaning take on the spice8.
Drydown, four hours and beyond
After four hours the review site finds that the perfume “smooths out into blonde woods”, with a base that is “creamy and dry rather than syrupy”3. Fragrantica’s launch piece sees the anise-flavoured top evolving into a warmer, woody framework, and says Safran Secret “reveals a vaporous texture”2.
Longevity and projection
One review site reports that wearers get roughly 6 to 10 hours on skin, which it calls consistent with a 30% extrait de parfum concentration3. If you want to see how that sits against lighter strengths, our perfume concentrations chart explains the 30% extrait point.
Within its own house, Safran Secret is listed at 30%1, while Cuir Infrarouge, Tobacco Carnaval, Tubéreuse Astrale, Hibiscus Mahajád and Musc Nurasana are each listed at 32%9,10,11,12,13. Founder Thibaud Crivelli has said he opts for eau de parfum and extrait de parfum over eau de toilette, keeping the oil concentrate high14.
On projection, the same review site says heavy projection makes it unsuitable for offices or hot weather3. Longevity and sillage vary with skin, climate and how much you apply, so read these figures as reported experience rather than a guarantee.
Who it suits, and when to wear it
Cold weather and evenings come up again and again. One Fragrantica writer put it this way: “Safran Secret carries through best in cold weather, in my opinion. In the heat of summer when I first tested this fragrance, its banality paled to the high temperatures. In winter’s slower evaporation curve, its secret subtleties of saffron are revealed.”8 The review site agrees that it works exceptionally well in cold weather and evening settings3.
That makes it a natural fit for autumn and winter wardrobes. Our guide to warm cold-weather picks covers more in the same mood.
By our reading, it suits people who like spicy woods and a soft, dry leather impression more than sweet ambers. If you want syrupy sweetness, the creamy-but-dry base described above is unlikely to deliver it.
The reported behaviour also suggests a light hand. With a concentrated extrait and heavy projection on one reviewer’s account, a small amount applied to skin before an evening out is a sensible starting point, and the slower evaporation of cooler air lets the saffron and woods show themselves without crowding the room.
Where it sits in the Maison Crivelli line-up
Maison Crivelli was founded in 2018 and aims to use familiar ingredients in unexpected combinations14. It launched at the end of 2018 with four eaux de parfum, and its founder has worked at Guerlain, Dior and Givenchy15. Perfumers are sent a mood board of photos, videos, descriptions of people met, music heard and food tasted15. The house also keeps a naming rule: “There is always an ingredient in the name”14. Safran Secret keeps the saffron in the name and the rest in the dark, and the founder’s page lists “Strolling through saffron fields shrouded in fog” among his experiences16.
Oud Maracujá is the house’s best performer on Scento: #17 among the most-bought unisex perfumes across Europe, October 2025 – September 2026 (Scento Fragrance Index). Fragrantica readers voted it Best Niche Fragrance 202417. For a perfume with a similar secrecy approach, Tobacco Carnaval also does not reveal its ingredients10, and Musc Nurasana shares Safran Secret’s perfumer13.

Other saffron and leather perfumes to explore
If Safran Secret’s saffron, woods and leather impressions appeal, these perfumes share declared materials with it. The notes below are the makers’ own wording. For a wider run of leather styles, see our best leather perfumes guide, and for more houses like this one, best niche perfumes.
| Perfume | House | Declared notes | Shared with Safran Secret |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crystal Saffron | Matière Première | Built on “Saffron Oil Greece” from the Kozani region; perfumer Aurélien Guichard18 | Saffron as the lead material |
| Black Saffron | Byredo | Juniper berries, pomelo, saffron; black violet, cristal rose, accord cuir; blonde woods, raspberry, vetiver19 | Saffron and blonde woods; juniper, which Fragrantica perceives in Safran Secret’s opening |
| Tuscan Leather | Tom Ford | Saffron, raspberry, thyme, olibanum, night-blooming jasmine, leather, black suede, amberwood20 | Saffron with leather |
| Ganymede | Marc-Antoine Barrois | Mandarin, osmanthus, leather accord, akigalawood, immortelle21 | The metallic-leather register |
Matière Première describes Crystal Saffron’s saffron oil as coming from the Kozani region in northern Greece18. The maker puts its eau de parfum at a concentration of essences between 20% and 25%, and its extrait between 25% and 30%18, which makes it a useful point of comparison for anyone curious how saffron behaves at different strengths. Marc-Antoine Barrois calls Ganymede “almost metallic mineral leather”, launched on 1 April 2019 and never reformulated21. Fragrantica has also run a side-by-side feature on it and Safran Secret8.
How we compiled this
We read the house’s product pages, Fragrantica’s launch coverage and listing, Who What Wear’s award coverage, one independent review site and the founder interviews cited below, all on 30 October 2026. Your questions, answered
- What does Safran Secret smell like?
- Fragrantica describes a spicy, almost camphor-like opening that suggests cardamom, then a herbal turn with juniper berries and aniseed, gentle saffron, and a woody base with myrrh and incense impressions. Its listing gives spices, saffron and blonde woods, with warm spicy, metallic, leather, tobacco and earthy accords. These are reviewer impressions rather than house-declared notes.
- What are the official notes of Safran Secret?
- There are none. Maison Crivelli says the ingredients used in the Safran Secret formula are not revealed. The legally required ingredient list on its page does name cedarwood, patchouli, cinnamon bark, clove and lavender oils, but that shows what is in the bottle, not the proportions or a note pyramid.
- How long does Safran Secret last?
- One review site reports that wearers get roughly 6 to 10 hours on skin, which it calls consistent with a 30% extrait de parfum concentration. Wear time varies with skin, weather and how much you apply, so treat the figure as reported experience rather than a guarantee.
- Is Safran Secret an extrait de parfum?
- Yes. Maison Crivelli lists Safran Secret at a concentration of 30%. ScentAdvice quotes the house describing it as the first extrait de parfum in the Olfactory Mysteries collection. Five other Maison Crivelli extraits discussed in this review are each listed at 32%.
- Is Safran Secret the same as Ingredients 07/2012?
- Yes. Fragrantica reports that Safran Secret is better known as Ingredients 07/2012, an exclusive created for a beauty boutique in Prague, now unveiled internationally as an extrait de parfum. The international launch was in 2025, and Parfumo dates the earlier release under the old name to 2022.
- Who made Safran Secret?
- Safran Secret was composed by Gaël Montero of Givaudan, according to Fragrantica, who describes him as dressing saffron in woody and herbaceous notes. Montero is also the perfumer credited by Maison Crivelli for Musc Nurasana, another extrait in the house's line-up.
- When should you wear Safran Secret?
- Reviewers point to cold weather and evenings. One Fragrantica writer found it carries through best in cold weather and that its banality paled in summer heat, while Vivir says it works exceptionally well in cold weather and evening settings and calls its heavy projection unsuitable for offices or hot weather.
- Did Safran Secret win an award?
- Yes. Who What Wear named Maison Crivelli Safran Secret Extrait de Parfum Best New Perfume in its Next in Beauty Awards 2025, announced in October 2025. Its coverage notes that the notes remain a secret and calls the scent spicy, intense and utterly unique.
