Amouage was founded in 1983 in Muscat at the request of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who wanted to revive Oman's perfume-making heritage and create an authentic gift for visiting heads of state. The house was conceived as 'The Gift of Kings,' and its name blends the French 'amour' with the Arabic word for waves.
The legendary perfumer Guy Robert created Amouage's debut fragrance, Gold (1983), setting a benchmark for lavish compositions using rare naturals such as Omani frankincense, silver frankincense, rose de mai, orris and sandalwood. Frankincense from the Boswellia sacra tree became the defining signature of the house.
