History & heritage
Thomas Burberry opened his first shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in 1856, aged 21, after an apprenticeship as a draper. In 1879 he introduced gabardine, a hardwearing, water-resistant and breathable cloth, and in 1891 the house opened a shop in the Haymarket in London. The trench coat, first adapted for military use in the First World War, and the Burberry check became its best-known signs.
The first Burberry fragrance, Burberrys for Men, launched in 1981. Since 2 October 2017 Coty has held the exclusive long-term global licence to develop, make and distribute Burberry fragrance and beauty, while Burberry leads the creative direction.
The modern range is built around a few clear lines. My Burberry (2014) was created by Francis Kurkdjian and inspired by the trench coat and a London garden after rain. Hero is a men's fragrance by Aurélien Guichard built on three cedarwoods, and Burberry Her (2018) is a berry-and-vanilla fragrance created by Francis Kurkdjian. Goddess (2023) is the house's first refillable fragrance, created by Amandine Clerc-Marie around three vanilla extractions.
