Signature notes
Kilian Hennessy, a sixth-generation descendant of the founder of the Hennessy cognac house, grew up among his family's oak cognac cellars in south-west France. The evaporation of spirit from the barrels — known as 'the angels' share' — became a formative scent memory that later inspired his perfumery.
After olfactory training and roles connected to houses including Paco Rabanne, Dior and Alexander McQueen, he launched By Kilian in 2007 with a collection of unisex perfumes organised into olfactive families such as The Fresh, The Narcotics, The Cellars, The Smokes and The Liquors, emphasising rare ingredients and refillable, 19th-century-apothecary-inspired packaging.
In 2016 The Estée Lauder Companies acquired a majority stake in the brand, later rebranded Kilian Paris, while Hennessy retained creative direction. The house has since grown to more than seventy fragrances and expanded into body and home scents, opening a Marais flagship in Paris.
