About Givenchy

Established
1952
Origin
Paris, France

Givenchy is a Paris couture house founded in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy, part of LVMH, whose perfumes include the L'Interdit range, Ange ou Démon, Gentleman Society and Irresistible. Scento sells Givenchy perfume samples and decants, so you can try a scent on your skin before choosing a size.

Givenchy perfumes mix Parisian polish with a dark romantic streak: the white-floral tuberose and orange blossom of L'Interdit, the saffron-and-vanilla duality of Ange ou Démon, and the iris, vetiver and woods of the Gentleman range.

History & heritage

Hubert de Givenchy founded the house in Paris in 1952 and presented its first collection, Les Séparables, that year. His friendship with Audrey Hepburn, who wore Givenchy on and off screen from the 1950s, became part of the house's image.

Parfums Givenchy is part of LVMH Perfumes & Cosmetics. Its first perfume, L'Interdit, dates from 1957 and was created for Audrey Hepburn. Wikipedia names the perfumer as Francis Fabron and records that the name came from her words "But I forbid you" when Givenchy wanted to sell it. L'Interdit was relaunched in 2018.

Other landmarks include Gentleman in 1974, Ange ou Démon in 2006 (created by Olivier Cresp and Jean-Pierre Bethouart), Irresistible Givenchy in 2020 and Gentleman Society in 2023. Scento sells the modern L'Interdit versions, not the 1957 original.

How to choose your Givenchy

Givenchy perfume samples and decants are useful because the L'Interdit range has many versions. A 2 ml or 5 ml decant lets you compare the Eau de Parfum, Intense, Rouge, Absolu and Élixir before you choose a size.

Choose by mood. For white florals, start with L'Interdit Eau de Parfum. For spice and rum, try L'Interdit Rouge, Absolu or Élixir. For an oriental floral, try Ange ou Démon. For men, the Gentleman range offers iris and woods in the Boisée and Réserve Privée editions, and tobacco and vanilla in Gentleman Society Ambrée.

On Scento's product pages the L'Interdit Absolu, Intense, Rouge and Élixir are labelled long-lasting, as is Ange ou Démon. Check each page before you choose a size.

Givenchy decants & perfume samples — your questions answered

Which Givenchy perfume should I try first?

For women, start with L'Interdit Eau de Parfum, a tuberose and orange blossom fragrance, or Ange ou Démon for an oriental floral. For men, try Gentleman Society. A 2 ml decant of each lets you compare them before you pick a larger size.

Where can I get Givenchy perfume samples and decants?

Scento sells Givenchy perfumes as decants, including the L'Interdit range, Ange ou Démon, Gentleman Society and Irresistible Givenchy, so you can try a scent on skin before choosing a larger size.

What does Givenchy L'Interdit smell like?

L'Interdit Eau de Parfum opens with pear and bergamot, has a heart of tuberose, orange blossom and jasmine sambac, and dries down to ambroxan, vetiver, vanilla and patchouli. It is a white floral with a woody base.

What is the story behind Givenchy L'Interdit?

L'Interdit dates from 1957 and was created for Audrey Hepburn, a friend of Hubert de Givenchy. According to Wikipedia the name comes from her words "But I forbid you" when he wanted to sell it. The perfume was relaunched in 2018.

Who owns Givenchy?

Givenchy is part of LVMH. Hubert de Givenchy founded the house in Paris in 1952, and the perfumes are run by LVMH Perfumes & Cosmetics.

Are Givenchy decants and perfume samples authentic?

Yes. Each Scento decant is hand-poured from an original full-sized bottle sourced through authorised European retailers — never a clone, dupe or inspired-by version. Manufacturer batch codes belong to those original bottles and are not printed on Scento decant vials.

How many sprays are in a Givenchy sample?

As a rough guide, a perfume atomizer gives about 10–15 sprays per millilitre, so a 2ml Givenchy sample is roughly 20–30 sprays, a 5ml about 50–75, and an 8ml about 80–120. Exact counts vary with the atomizer and how heavily you spray. Available sizes: 2ml, 5ml, 8ml, 30ml.

Do I pay customs or VAT on Givenchy samples in the EU?

No extra customs for EU orders. Scento ships Givenchy decants from within the EU to 27 European markets, so EU buyers pay no import duties or customs charges and usually receive their order in 1–5 business days. Orders to non-EU European countries may be subject to local import VAT set by your country, not by Scento.

Should I buy a Givenchy decant or a full bottle?

Buy a decant to test or rotate a scent, and a full bottle once you know you love it. A 2ml decant is only about 2–4% of a 50–100ml bottle, so it lets you wear Givenchy for days before committing to full-bottle price. For sealed presentation or gifting, an official boutique or authorised retailer is the better route.

Which Givenchy fragrance should I try first?

Gentleman Eau de Parfum Reserve Privée and L'Interdit Élixir are the Givenchy fragrances our members reach for most, so they are the easiest place to start. If you want to explore further, Gentleman Eau de Parfum Reserve Privée, L'Interdit Élixir, L'Interdit Eau de Parfum make a strong first set in affordable decant sizes.
