History & heritage
Lancôme was founded in 1935 by Armand Petitjean, with Guillaume d'Ornano joining for sales and marketing. Perfume was the brand's start: its first five fragrances, Tendre Nuit, Bocages, Conquête, Kypre and Tropiques, debuted at the Brussels World's Fair in 1935, and skincare followed in 1936.
The name was chosen by Elisabeth d'Ornano, inspired by the Château de Lancosme in the Brenne region. Roses growing there inspired the brand's emblem, a single golden rose, and Petitjean grew Centifolia roses himself. L'Oréal has owned the brand since 1964.
Trésor was created at the perfume company IFF in the 1980s. La Vie Est Belle launched in 2012, composed by Anne Flipo, Dominique Ropion and Olivier Polge, and the house describes it as an iconic gourmand iris. Idôle followed in 2019, created by three female perfumers: Shyamala Maisondieu, Adriana Medina and Nadège Le Garlantezec.
