Francis Kurkdjian was born in Paris in 1969 and is a perfumer known for Jean Paul Gaultier's Le Male, which he created in 1995. He opened a bespoke perfume workshop in 2001, recreated Marie Antoinette's perfume for Versailles in 2006 and was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2008.
Maison Francis Kurkdjian was born in 2009, founded by Kurkdjian with his business partner Marc Chaya, who runs the company. The house presents its collection as a fragrance wardrobe, with a first boutique at 5 rue d'Alger in Paris.
In 2017 LVMH announced it had acquired a majority share in the house, with the two founders staying on as shareholders and in their roles. Its best-known creation, Baccarat Rouge 540, was commissioned for the 250th anniversary of the crystal maker Baccarat and takes its name from the temperature at which the crystal is made.
