History & heritage
Gianni Versace, born in Reggio Calabria, moved to Milan in 1972. His first collection under his own name was shown at La Permanente in Milan in March 1978, and his brother Santo Versace had joined the business in 1976. The Medusa emblem is inspired by Greek mythology and the ancient Greek heritage of Calabria.
After Gianni Versace's death in 1997 his sister Donatella became creative director. The house was later owned in part by Blackstone and then by Capri Holdings, and Prada Group completed its acquisition of Versace in December 2025.
The first Versace fragrance, Gianni Versace for Women, dates from 1981. The Crystal line began with Crystal Noir in 2004, followed by Bright Crystal in 2006 and Yellow Diamond in 2011. Eros, created by Aurélien Guichard, launched in 2012 with a Greek-mythology theme and Medusa on the bottle, and Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue followed in 2016. Versace fragrances have been made under licence by Euroitalia since 2005.
