The best Guerlain perfume for most people is Shalimar, the amber classic Guerlain first made in 1925, which we recommend as the Eau de Parfum.1 Guerlain has created over 1 100 fragrances since 1828,2 so we picked one for evening, men, women, leather and summer, plus the most-ordered at Scento.
In short
- Best overall: Shalimar, the amber classic Guerlain first made in 1925, which we recommend as the Eau de Parfum.
- Most-ordered at Scento: Herbes Troublantes, followed by Spiritueuse Double Vanille.3
- For men, L’Homme Idéal L’Intense; for women, Mon Guerlain; for unisex niche taste, Angélique Noire.
- Trying costs far less than committing: a 2 ml Shalimar decant is 7,90 €, while Guerlain lists its 90 ml bottle at 153,00 €.4
Guerlain at a glance
About Guerlain: what to know before you choose
LVMH counts “+1 100 olfactory creations since 1828” for the house. Its founder is Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, and LVMH’s page says “Thierry Wasser is the heir to an olfactory legacy of some 1100 fragrances”.2 LVMH “acquired financial control of the family-owned company in late April” 1994, according to WWD.5 The house perfumers today are Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk.7
Knowing the house vocabulary makes the range easier to read. Guerlainade is the house signature, covered below. L’Art & La Matière is, Marie Claire says, the biggest grouping from the house, with 22 unique scents.8 Two of the picks below, Herbes Troublantes and Spiritueuse Double Vanille, belong to that line. Because the classics and the newer lines sit side by side, you can move from a 1925 amber to a modern citrus in a single order. For the full range we stock, see the Guerlain page.
Guerlain’s four collections
Guerlain’s own page on the art of fragrance sets out how the house organises its perfumes.7 It starts with the signature: “The inimitable Guerlinade has been the signature of Guerlain fragrance creations since 1921”, with vanilla, bergamot, tonka bean, iris, rose and jasmine. Shalimar is described there as “The first amber fragrance”.7 The four collections are:
- L’Art & La Matière, the line that includes Herbes Troublantes and Spiritueuse Double Vanille.
- Aqua Allegoria, “created in 1999” and reinvented in 2022 with “up to 95 % naturalness”.7
- Les Légendaires.
- The Masculine collection.
How to choose a Guerlain
Start with the note family you already enjoy, because Guerlain covers most of them.
- Vanilla and amber: Shalimar Eau de Parfum (bergamot, iris, incense, vanilla, tonka), Spiritueuse Double Vanille (incense, pink pepper, rose, vanilla, benzoin) and Mon Guerlain (lavender, iris, sandalwood, vanilla).
- Fresh and citrus: Aqua Allegoria Forte Mandarine Basilic (citrus, green, white floral), Herbes Troublantes (bergamot, orange blossom, white musk) and Néroli Outrenoir (citrus, neroli, smoky tea, myrrh).
- Leather and spice: Cuir Béluga (aldehydes, immortelle, suede, vanilla) and L’Homme Idéal L’Intense (almond, chili, leather, tonka).
- Green and woody: Vétiver (citrus, vetiver, tobacco, nutmeg) and Samsara Eau de Parfum (sandalwood, jasmine, iris).
The best Guerlain perfumes
Each pick below links to a 2 ml decant at its retail price. All are also sold in 5 ml and 8 ml, and some in 30 ml.
Shalimar Eau de Parfum by Guerlain
Best overall, and the icon. A single bottle shows why the house is still discussed a century later. LVMH’s anniversary piece calls Shalimar, created in 1925, “the first amber perfume in history”.1 The Eau de Parfum we stock opens on bergamot and moves through iris and incense into vanilla and tonka. It suits evenings, cooler days and anyone who wants to understand what Guerlain means by amber. Shalimar Eau de Parfum as a 2 ml decant (7,90 €)
Herbes Troublantes by Guerlain
Scento customers’ favourite. It is the most-ordered Guerlain at Scento, ranked first among the house’s perfumes by paid orders from October 2025 to September 2026.3 It belongs to L’Art & La Matière9 and is built on bergamot, orange blossom and white musk. Guerlain France notes that Herbes Troublantes is the new name of Un Dimanche à la Campagne.9 The profile is clean and bright, and it works from morning to evening. Herbes Troublantes as a 2 ml decant (15,90 €)
Spiritueuse Double Vanille by Guerlain
Best for evening and vanilla. This is the second most-ordered Guerlain at Scento3 and another L’Art & La Matière fragrance.10 Incense, pink pepper and rose frame the vanilla, with benzoin adding a resinous warmth. Choose it for dinners, autumn and winter, and for anyone who wants vanilla with some edge rather than a sugary, dessert-like sweetness. It is the natural next step if you enjoy Shalimar and want a more modern take on vanilla. Spiritueuse Double Vanille as a 2 ml decant (16,90 €)
L’Homme Idéal L’Intense by Guerlain
Best for men. Almond, chili, leather and tonka make it a warm, slightly sweet fragrance with a leather edge, suited to evenings out and cooler weather. It is the easiest place for a man new to Guerlain to start, and it is also worn by anyone who likes a warm, spicy leather. If you prefer something drier and more classic, Vétiver as a 2 ml decant (8,90 €) is the alternative, with citrus, vetiver, tobacco and nutmeg. L’Homme Idéal L’Intense as a 2 ml decant (6,90 €)
Mon Guerlain by Guerlain
Best for women. Lavender, iris, sandalwood and vanilla give it a soft, creamy character that reads as easy to wear every day, to work or on the weekend. It is a good first Guerlain if you are not sure where to start. The alternative is La Petite Robe Noire, “Created in 2009 by Delphine Jelk and Thierry Wasser” according to Guerlain,7 which swaps lavender for cherry, almond, rose and anise: La Petite Robe Noire as a 2 ml decant (7,90 €). Weighing up other options? Read our guide to Mon Guerlain alternatives. Mon Guerlain as a 2 ml decant (7,90 €)
Angélique Noire by Guerlain
Best unisex niche. Angelica, pear, caraway and vanilla make an unusual, slightly green and sweet fragrance that does not read as masculine or feminine. It is the third most-ordered Guerlain at Scento.3 The alternative is Néroli Outrenoir, which pairs citrus and neroli with smoky tea and myrrh: Néroli Outrenoir as a 2 ml decant (14,90 €). Angélique Noire as a 2 ml decant (14,90 €)
Cuir Béluga by Guerlain
Best leather. Aldehydes open onto immortelle, suede and vanilla, so the leather feels soft rather than sharp. It is a good first leather for anyone who finds the genre severe, and it sits fifth among Guerlain perfumes by paid orders at Scento.3 Cuir Béluga as a 2 ml decant (11,90 €)
Aqua Allegoria Forte Mandarine Basilic by Guerlain
Best for summer. Citrus, green notes and white florals give a fresh, light impression for warm days and the office. It is the ninth most-ordered Guerlain at Scento.3 Aqua Allegoria Forte Mandarine Basilic as a 2 ml decant (7,90 €)
Samsara Eau de Parfum by Guerlain
Best value for trying. Guerlain dates Samsara to 1989 and credits Jean-Paul Guerlain.7 At 6,90 € for 2 ml it is among the lowest entry prices in the house, and it brings sandalwood, jasmine and iris, a creamy, floral wood. For something lighter, Aqua Allegoria Florabloom as a 2 ml decant (6,90 €) offers tuberose, coconut and violet at the same price. Samsara Eau de Parfum as a 2 ml decant (6,90 €)
More Guerlains worth a decant
Several other Guerlains are popular with Scento shoppers and well worth sampling.
- Tobacco Honey: honey, clove, oud and sandalwood (2 ml 13,90 €).
- Ambre Samar: cardamom, amber and benzoin (2 ml 8,90 €).
- Insolence Eau de Parfum: violet, strawberry and iris (2 ml 8,90 €).
- Eau de Tulle (2 ml 14,90 €).
Which Guerlain to try first
If you only want one vial, match it to the occasion. Shalimar Eau de Parfum is the one to wear when you want a fragrance with history, and LVMH’s page describes the original as “created in 1925 the first oriental fragrance in history”.2 Herbes Troublantes is the safest start for a clean, bright scent, which is probably why it leads the house at Scento.3 Spiritueuse Double Vanille and Cuir Béluga are the richer choices for colder months, while Aqua Allegoria Forte Mandarine Basilic is the one to reach for when the weather warms up.
You can order two or three 2 ml vials together and wear each for a few days before deciding. For the picks in this guide, that keeps the cost of finding the right Guerlain between 6,90 € and 16,90 € per vial, instead of the 335,00 € Guerlain lists for 100 ml of Herbes Troublantes or Spiritueuse Double Vanille.9,10
Vintage versus modern Guerlain
Guerlain has been making perfume since 1828, so older bottles are a topic in themselves. Readers often ask whether an older Shalimar smells different from the current one. Our guide to vintage and modern Guerlain scent evolution explains how the house’s scents have changed over time. Marie Claire says that for Shalimar’s 100th anniversary, “Jelk created a more modern, more vanilla-forward, less animalistic version”.8
What a Guerlain costs to try
Decants cost more per ml than a full bottle. What they change is the price of finding out. A 2 ml Shalimar Eau de Parfum is 7,90 €, against 153,00 € for Guerlain’s 90 ml bottle in France.4 A 2 ml Spiritueuse Double Vanille is 16,90 €, against 335,00 € for 100 ml in Spain.10 If you already know you love a scent, a full bottle is the better route per ml. If you are still deciding, a vial lets you wear it for several days first.
| Perfume | Guerlain official price | Official per ml | Scento 2 ml | Scento 2 ml per ml | Scento 30 ml per ml |
