Check where a shop ships from first: since 1 July 2026, parcels up to €150 entering the EU from outside it carry a €3 customs duty¹, charged once per category of goods, so several perfumes in one parcel count once.²
Compare price per ml at the same size. At the larger sizes, Aventus works out cheaper per ml at Scento and Baccarat Rouge 540 at Eurodecants, so no single shop is the answer for every perfume.
A 2 ml decant holds about 30 sprays, enough to wear a perfume on several days.³

How to choose a perfume sample site: six checks

Run these on any shop before you order, Scento included. They decide what you actually pay, how long you wait and what happens if the perfume isn’t right.

1. Where it ships from

If you live in the EU, a shop that ships from inside the EU means no customs step. A parcel from outside pays the EU’s temporary €3 duty on consignments up to €150, from 1 July 2026 until 1 July 2028¹, charged once per category of goods.² UK buyers have the opposite problem: Scento, for one, does not ship to the UK or Ireland.⁴

2. What it names as its source

Every shop claims authenticity, so read what each one names. Visionary Fragrances says its stock is “purchased from the brand or a registered distributor”.⁶ Aus Liebe zum Duft buys “ausschließlich direkt von den Marken oder deren Vertrieben” (only directly from the brands or their distributors).¹⁰ Scento names “authorised European retailers”¹¹ and Eurodecants “authorized retailers and trusted suppliers”.⁷

3. Price per ml at the same size

Headline prices mislead when sizes differ. Divide the price by the millilitres and compare like with like: a 0.75 ml vial and a 10 ml decant are different purchases. The worked example below shows how the answer changes from one perfume to the next.

4. Freshness

Aus Liebe zum Duft advises using its samples “innerhalb von 6 Monaten” (within six months).¹⁰ Visionary Fragrances says “we only decant as and when the order comes in”.⁶

5. Returns

Policies run from none at all at DecantX¹² and MicroPerfumes¹³ to Eurodecants’ “30-day money-back guarantee”.⁷ Scento takes unopened items back within 30 days and refunds them as store credit.¹⁴

6. Red flags

Walk away from “inspired-by” relabelling, a shop with no registered business or no published returns policy, and a scent that fades “within an hour or two”.¹¹

Samples, decants, minis and travel sprays: what’s the difference?

Shops use these words loosely. Here is what each one means, so you know what you are buying.

Decant: “Genuine fragrance transferred from its full-size original bottle into a smaller atomizer.”³
Sample: “Usually means a small manufacturer or retailer vial; some are decanted, some are filled at the factory.”³
Mini: The brand’s own small bottle. Decant shops don’t sell them: “We do not sell miniature versions of official perfume bottles,” says Eurodecants.⁷
Travel spray: A decant in a pocket atomiser. Visionary Fragrances labels its 5 ml and 10 ml “Sample Travel Spray”⁶, and Scento calls its 8 ml the “8ml Travel Spray”.¹⁵
Tester: “The brand’s own full-size bottle, meant for trying in store — not a small size.”³

What is a perfume decant?

EU vs UK vs US shops: customs and delivery in 2026

Where the parcel starts decides whether customs applies. Three cases cover almost every order.

Buying inside the EU

A parcel that stays inside the EU does not clear customs. Scento’s shipping policy says “All orders are shipped from our central EU warehouse” and “There are no customs fees, no hidden taxes”, which holds for its 26 EU destinations.⁴ Delivery costs €2.90 (Romania) to €17.90 (Cyprus and Malta), “Shipping is free when the order value reaches €75”, processing takes “Usually 1 to 2 business days” and transit “1 to 5 business days”.⁴

Eurodecants offers “Free shipping above €60”.⁷ Essenza Nobile ships free from €50, or from €15 on sample-only orders (“Kostenloser Versand ab 50€, ab 15€ bei reinen Probenbestellungen”).¹⁹

Buying from the UK or US into the EU

Since 1 July 2026, goods entering the EU from outside carry “a temporary €3 customs duty per item on low-value consignments (up to €150)”, until 1 July 2028.¹ The Council of the EU adds that “It is charged per category of goods, not per parcel”, so several perfumes in one parcel count once, and that a handling fee on these parcels starts “no later than 1 November 2026”.²

Visionary Fragrances runs a separate EU store that promises “7-10 days with No Custom Fees! - FREE if spending €100”.⁶ Among US shops, DecantX says “We ship Worldwide”¹², Scent Split advertises only US and Canada shipping²⁰, and MicroPerfumes does not ship to the EU.¹³

Buying in the UK

Into Great Britain, consignments of “£135 or less” carry “UK supply VAT charged at the point of sale”.⁸ Scento does not deliver to the UK or Ireland.⁴ From our table, Les Senteurs in London offers “Free UK delivery on orders over £175”⁵, Visionary Fragrances sells from the UK⁶, and Eurodecants ships to the UK.⁷

What a 2 ml really costs

For Baccarat Rouge 540, a 2 ml costs €13.90 at Scento¹⁵, €14.95 at Eurodecants⁷ and €12.62 at Visionary Fragrances’ EU store.¹⁸ Aventus costs €9.95 at Scento¹⁶ and €12.95 on sale at Eurodecants (normally €14.95). Oud Wood costs €15.90 at Scento¹⁷ and €13.95 at Eurodecants. US shops price in dollars: DecantX lists $17.79, $13.79 and $12.79 for the three, before any EU customs.¹²

Which size to buy

Start small. In Scento’s order data for October 2025 to September 2026, 76% of decants were bought as 2 ml, 11% as 5 ml and 9.5% as 8 ml.⁹ Spray counts are Scento’s own figures.³

2 ml, about 30 sprays: For testing. Enough to wear a perfume on several days and on your own skin before committing.
5 ml, about 75 sprays: For a perfume you already like and want to wear for a season.
8 ml, about 120 sprays: A pocket travel spray. At Scento, Aventus costs €34.90 for 8 ml against €9.95 for 2 ml.¹⁶
30 ml bottle decant: Scento offers it on most perfumes: Aventus has one at €119.90¹⁶, while Baccarat Rouge 540¹⁵ and Oud Wood¹⁷ list no 30 ml option.

How decants are made, and how to spot a fake

A decant is only as genuine as the bottle it came from. Scento describes its own process in three steps.³

“A brand-new, factory-sealed bottle of the original fragrance is opened — bought through authorized retail channels.”
The perfume is “decanted into a fresh, sanitized glass atomizer, with no dilution or additives”.
“Manufacturer batch codes… are not printed on Scento decant vials.”

Scento’s European Decant Index states that reselling decants of authentic perfume is legal in the EU.²¹

Batch codes and other signs

Eurodecants offers batch codes “on request”.⁷ Scento’s view is that a code written on a vial “is not proof of authenticity”.¹¹ The stronger signals are the six checks above: a named source, a registered business, a published returns policy, and a scent that does not fade “within an hour or two”.

Are perfume decants authentic?

Scento in brief

Scento is a European perfume decant retailer with its head office in Paris, founded in 2024. It sells 1,000+ fragrances in 2 ml, 5 ml and 8 ml vials, plus a 30 ml bottle decant on most perfumes, and has 85,000+ members.²²

Where it is strong: Orders ship from a central EU warehouse, so there is no customs step for its 26 EU countries.⁴ Decants are “hand-poured from an original full-sized bottle sourced through authorised European retailers”.¹¹ It offers an 8 ml size and a 30 ml bottle on most perfumes, and at 8 ml Aventus works out at €4.36 per ml.
Where it may not suit you: It does not deliver to the UK or Ireland.⁴ Returns cover unopened items within 30 days and are refunded as store credit.¹⁴ Baccarat Rouge 540 costs more per ml at its 8 ml than at Eurodecants’ 10 ml, and Baccarat Rouge 540 and Oud Wood have no 30 ml option.

Are perfume decants real perfume?

Yes, when the shop pours them from original bottles. Scento defines a decant as “genuine fragrance transferred from its full-size original bottle into a smaller atomizer”. Every shop we compared claims authenticity; what differs is the source each one names, from brands and registered distributors (Visionary Fragrances, Aus Liebe zum Duft) to authorised retailers (Scento, Eurodecants). Also check for a registered business and a published returns policy.

Is it legal to sell perfume decants in the EU?

Scento, which sells decants, states in its European Decant Index that reselling decants of authentic perfume is legal in the EU. For a buyer, the practical questions are the ones in this guide: whether the shop names where its bottles come from, ships from inside the EU and publishes a returns policy.

How many sprays are in a 2 ml perfume decant?

About 30. Scento gives roughly 30 sprays for a 2 ml decant, 75 for 5 ml and 120 for 8 ml. That makes 2 ml enough to wear a fragrance on several days before you decide on a larger size. It is also the size most people choose: 76% of Scento decants are bought as 2 ml, according to its own order data for October 2025 to September 2026.

Will I pay customs ordering perfume samples from the UK or US into the EU?

You can. Since 1 July 2026 the EU charges a temporary €3 customs duty per item on low-value consignments up to €150 arriving from outside the EU, until 1 July 2028, according to the European Commission. The Council of the EU says it is charged once per category of goods, so several perfumes in one parcel count once, and that a handling fee follows no later than 1 November 2026. A shop that ships from inside the EU avoids both.

Which sites ship perfume samples to the UK?

Scento does not ship to the UK or Ireland. Of the shops we checked on 12 October 2026, Les Senteurs in London delivers in the UK and offers free UK delivery on orders over £175, Visionary Fragrances is UK-based, and Eurodecants says it ships through continental Europe and the UK. HMRC says goods of £135 or less sold into Great Britain carry UK VAT charged at the point of sale.

Does Scent Split ship to Europe?

Scent Split’s site, read on 12 October 2026, advertises free US and Canada shipping, and its shipping policy names no other countries, so EU shipping is not stated. DecantX says “We ship Worldwide”, with free shipping in the US only, and MicroPerfumes ships to the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand but not the EU. A parcel from the US into the EU now carries the €3 EU customs duty.

What is the difference between a perfume sample, a decant and a mini?

A decant is genuine fragrance moved from a full-size bottle into a smaller atomiser. A sample usually means a small manufacturer or retailer vial, some decanted and some filled at the factory. A mini is the brand’s own small bottle, which decant shops such as Eurodecants say they do not sell. A tester is the brand’s full-size bottle for trying in store, not a small size.

Can you return a perfume sample?

It depends on the shop. DecantX and MicroPerfumes do not accept returns, Aus Liebe zum Duft gives no right of withdrawal on samples, and Les Senteurs does not take back opened products. Eurodecants offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. Scento accepts unopened items within 30 days and refunds them as store credit.
