The best amber perfumes are built on warm resin, not on the yellow stone: an accord of labdanum, benzoin and vanilla, often with tonka.1,2 This guide sorts 15 of them by style, from dry Ambre Sultan to golden Grand Soir and sheer Ambra Calabria, each with the 2 ml price for testing it on your own skin.
In short
- Dry and resinous: Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens, 2 ml at €7.90.
- Golden and balsamic, the classic accord: Grand Soir, 2 ml at €13.90, or L’Ambre des Merveilles, 2 ml at €6.90.
- Spicy, boozy and vanilla: Khamrah, 2 ml at €5.90, or Spiritueuse Double Vanille, 2 ml at €16.90.

What “amber” means in perfume
In perfumery, amber is an accord rather than an ingredient you can harvest. The Perfume Society calls it “a ‘fantasy’ (synthetic note)”: the name given to a simple accord of labdanum, benzoin and vanilla, sometimes with “touches of tonka and Peru balsam”. The accord dates to “the late 1800s”, tied to the invention of synthetic vanillin.1
Maison Francis Kurkdjian is just as direct: “The amber used in perfumery has nothing to do with the yellow amber stone, which is ornamental but has no smell, nor with ambergris, which refers to an animal extract from the sperm whale.”2 GIA adds that “the oldest amber dates to the Upper Carboniferous Period (approximately 320 million years ago)”, and that although an oil made from burned amber was used in scents in ancient times, “it isn’t used in perfume today”.6
Ambergris is a different material again. It “is produced by sperm whales” and is “uncommon, found in less than 5% of whale carcasses”.4 Ambroxan, the modern woody-amber molecule, traces back to 1950, when Firmenich worked out the structure of Ambrox and patented a synthesis route from sclareolide, made from sclareol, a compound extracted from clary sage.3 For depth on each, read our amber in perfume explainer and the guide to ambergris perfumes.
How we chose
Every pick had to answer four questions. Where does the amber come from: labdanum, benzoin, vanilla or tonka, or a modern woody-amber molecule? How heavy is it, from sheer to dense? When would you wear it? And what does it cost to try in a 2 ml vial?
Where Scento’s own order data has a rank, we note it. Louis Vuitton (9.5%) and Amouage (8.5%) hold first and second place among houses by share of decants in the Scento Fragrance Index, which covers paid decant orders in Europe from October 2025 to September 2026. Two of the 15 picks, Grand Soir and Baccarat Rouge 540, sit in Scento’s 25 most-bought unisex perfumes, and Interlude Man is in the 25 most-bought masculine. None of the others has a rank, so none is claimed. The list is sorted by style, not crowned. Browse the full amber note page (479 fragrances) if you want more.
Dry and resinous amber
Dry amber leans on resins and herbs rather than sugar. These three are the least sweet in the guide.
Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens
A dry, herbal resin built from resins, amber, bay leaf, myrrh, benzoin and vanilla, with sandalwood, coriander, oregano, patchouli, angelica and myrtle. The perfumer is Christopher Sheldrake.8 It suits cool evenings and anyone who finds sweet amber cloying.
Ambre Sultan as a 2 ml decant (€7.90)
Interlude Man by Amouage
A smoky incense amber. The top is oregano, pepper and bergamot; the heart is incense, opoponax, amber and labdanum; the base is oud, leather, sandalwood and patchouli. Pierre Negrin composed it in 2012.9 It is #19 among Scento’s most-bought masculine perfumes (Scento Fragrance Index, October 2025 – September 2026, Europe), and it reads best in autumn and winter.
Interlude Man as a 2 ml decant (€11.95)
Ambre Samar by Guerlain
An incense and almond amber from Guerlain’s Absolus Allegoria line, launched in 2025. Frankincense, almond and cardamom open it; the heart is an “Amber Gold Accord, Davana, Amber Tincture”; benzoin, patchouli and tonka bean sit underneath. Delphine Jelk is the perfumer.10 The benzoin note page (156 fragrances) lists more perfumes with the same balsamic base.
Ambre Samar as a 2 ml decant (€8.90)
Golden, balsamic amber
This is the classic accord: labdanum, benzoin and vanilla, warm and resinous, with a soft powdery finish.
Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian
Fragrantica lists Spanish labdanum and orange on top, lavender and Siam benzoin in the heart, and amber, vanilla, tonka bean, musk and cedar in the base, and dates it to 2016.11 The maker’s own page is where we took the definition of amber used in this guide, and Grand Soir is #14 among Scento’s most-bought unisex perfumes (Scento Fragrance Index, October 2025 – September 2026, Europe). Our Grand Soir review covers how it wears.
Grand Soir as a 2 ml decant (€13.90)
L’Ambre des Merveilles by Hermès
Hermès says it “blends a captivating amber, a deep patchouli and a voluptuous Balsam of Peru”, with perfumer’s amber, patchouli and Balsam of Peru as the main raw materials. The perfumer is Jean-Claude Ellena.12 It is woody, sheer and airy, so it is a good first amber for warm days.
L’Ambre des Merveilles as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)
Shalimar Eau de Parfum by Guerlain
The vanilla amber classic. Jacques Guerlain created the original in 1925, and this eau de parfum is listed as 1990. The top mixes citruses, bergamot, lemon, cedar and mandarin; the heart holds iris, patchouli, vetiver, jasmine and rose; the base brings incense, vanilla, leather, opoponax, civet, sandalwood, tonka bean and musk.13
Shalimar Eau de Parfum as a 2 ml decant (€7.90)
Where the labdanum comes from
Labdanum is the resin of the rockrose, Cistus ladanifer, which “produces a resin, called labdanum”, extracted in countries such as France, Spain and Portugal “mainly to be used in the perfume industry due to its fixative and aromatic properties”. It makes up “more than 10% (w/w) of its dry weight”.14 In central Spain, a 2021 harvest study found that “the maximum obtention of labdanum gum occurs in July”, with young plants averaging 6.2 g per 100 g of dry material against 5.4 g per 100 g for old ones. Collection “is generally done manually”, because “the regulations interdict the use of machinery due to the risk of wildfires”.5 The labdanum note page lists 129 fragrances.
Spicy and boozy amber
Spice, rum and dried fruit push the same resinous base towards something richer.
Khamrah by Lattafa
Spiced dates and praline. Cinnamon, nutmeg and bergamot lead, with dates, praline, tuberose and mahonial in the heart, and vanilla, tonka bean, amberwood, myrrh, benzoin and akigalawood underneath. It launched in 2022.15 It shares the lowest 2 ml price in this guide with Amber Musk.
Khamrah as a 2 ml decant (€5.90)
Opium Pour Homme by Yves Saint Laurent
Spicy, anise-led and balsamic, from 1995. Star anise and black currant open it; pepper and galanga form the heart; Bourbon vanilla, Tolu balsam and Atlas cedar finish it. The perfumer is Jacques Cavallier Belletrud.16 It suits colder months and an evening setting.
Opium Pour Homme as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)
Blonde Amber by Clive Christian
A smoky tobacco amber with rum. The top holds rum, olibanum, bitter orange, cardamom, pink pepper, ginger, bergamot and grapefruit; the heart runs through dried fruits, white tobacco, sandalwood, saffron, tuberose, osmanthus, jasmine and orris; the base has tonka, vanilla, myrrh, labdanum, patchouli, cedar, musk and vetiver. Vincent Ricord composed it for the Noble Collection XXI Art Deco, announced on 28 April 2022.17
Blonde Amber as a 2 ml decant (€42.90)
Vanilla amber
Spiritueuse Double Vanille by Guerlain
A boozy vanilla with benzoin. Incense, pink pepper and bergamot open; cedar, ylang-ylang, Bulgarian rose and jasmine form the heart; vanilla and benzoin close. Jean-Paul Guerlain composed it in 2007.18 If vanilla is what you are really after, our best vanilla perfumes guide goes wider.
Spiritueuse Double Vanille as a 2 ml decant (€16.90)
Floral and oud amber
Ambre Nuit by Dior
Rose over a woody-ambery base, from 2009. Bergamot and grapefruit open; Damask rose and pink pepper form the heart; ambergris, guaiac wood, cedar and patchouli sit at the base.19 Dior calls it a “Unisex Eau de Parfum with Ambery and Floral Notes”.20
Ambre Nuit as a 2 ml decant (€16.90)
Ambre Levant by Louis Vuitton
Amber and oud. Cinnamon and mandarin open, incense and white pepper form the heart, and oud, ambergris, amber and labdanum make the base. Jacques Cavallier Belletrud is the perfumer, and Fragrantica dates it to 2026.21 Louis Vuitton describes it as “rooted in the marriage of two emblematic signatures from the Middle East: amber and oud”, with amber blooming “thanks to the resinous warmth of labdanum, the purity of white incense and the mineral tension of a contemporary ambergris”.22
Ambre Levant as a 2 ml decant (€17.90)
Sheer and modern amber
Ambra Calabria by Nishane
A green citrus amber. Bergamot, galbanum and green leaves open, jasmine and coriander seeds form the heart, and the base is “sweet amber – musk – vanilla”. Nishane files it as “CITRUS GREEN / FRESH FLORAL /AMBERY” in Extrait de Parfum strength.23 Fragrantica names Jorge Lee as the perfumer and dates it to 2015.24 It is the lightest amber here, so it is the one for summer.
Ambra Calabria as a 2 ml decant (€12.95)
Amber Musk by Montale
A powdery ambery musk of white musk, ambergris, amber and cedar, dated to 2018 by Fragrantica.25 It also features in our ambergris guide.
Amber Musk as a 2 ml decant (€5.90)
Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian
The house describes the family as “amber woody floral”: jasmine and saffron on top, an ambergris accord (woody amber) in the heart, cedar accord and fir balsam in the base. It was “launched in 2014 in only 250 numbered crystal bottles”, and the eau de parfum followed in mid-January 2016.26 Scento’s order data puts it at #11 among the most-bought unisex perfumes and #23 across Europe (Scento Fragrance Index, October 2025 – September 2026).
Baccarat Rouge 540 as a 2 ml decant (€13.90)
Woody-amber molecules
Modern amber woods come from molecules, not resin. Fragrances of the World notes that the industry “often uses amber as a simple way to describe ambergris as well as a group of related ‘woody-amber’ ingredients”, and that its Woody Amber family “encapsulates the use of modern woody-amber ingredients”.27 Ambrox “is produced industrially by semisynthesis from sclareol, a diterpene-diol isolated from Clary sage”.28 Firmenich’s own timeline runs from the 1950 discovery of the structure, through a 1988 route to avoid a clary sage shortage, to the 2016 commercial scale-up of Ambrox Super on a biotechnology platform.3 Our Ambroxan article tells the full story.
Why “oriental” became “amber”
If Fragrantica or a department-store site still labels a perfume “Oriental”, this is why. Michael Edwards’ Fragrance Wheel changed from “Floral > Oriental > Woody > Fresh” to “Floral > Ambery > Woody > Fresh”, renaming the families “Oriental to Amber, Soft Oriental to Soft Amber, Floral Oriental to Floral Amber, Woody Oriental to Woody Amber”. Michael Edwards announced the change in June 2021, effective from mid-July.7 The wheel’s previous change was “in 1998 when Michael added the Water family”, and the new Amber family is described as “Sensual blends of golden resins, opulent flowers and sweet vanilla”.27

How to test an amber perfume in 2 ml
Amber is a base-note accord, built on materials such as tonka bean, coumarin and resins like benzoin or incense, “which are all base notes”.2 That means it shows its character late. Spray a 2 ml vial on skin in the morning and judge it after a full day, not after ten minutes on a paper strip.
Scento sells more than 1,000 fragrances in 2 ml, 5 ml and 8 ml vials, plus a 30 ml bottle decant on most perfumes, hand-poured from original full-size bottles bought through authorised retail channels with no dilution. The 2 ml price of a pick in this guide runs from €5.90 (Khamrah and Amber Musk) to €42.90 (Blonde Amber).
How we compiled this
We read every source below on 27 October 2026. Notes come from maker pages where one exists and otherwise from Fragrantica, whose pyramids are community data, so launch years marked as Fragrantica’s are not maker-confirmed. Perfumes were chosen by the four criteria above, then checked against our catalogue on the same day. Prices are one-time retail prices for a 2 ml decant. Rank figures come from the Scento Fragrance Index, our analysis of our own paid decant orders in Europe from October 2025 to September 2026, and are shares and ranks only.

Your questions, answered
- What does amber smell like in perfume?
- Amber smells warm, resinous and sweet. The Perfume Society describes it as a simple accord of labdanum, benzoin and vanilla, sometimes with touches of tonka and Peru balsam. Maison Francis Kurkdjian adds that the accord is generally enriched with tonka bean, coumarin and resins such as benzoin or incense, which are all base notes.
- Is amber the same as ambergris?
- No. The Natural History Museum says ambergris is produced by sperm whales and is found in less than 5% of whale carcasses. Maison Francis Kurkdjian describes the amber used in perfumery as having nothing to do with ambergris, which it calls an animal extract from the sperm whale. The amber accord is plant resin with vanillin.
- Is amber perfume made from amber stone?
- No. GIA says that although an oil made from burned amber was used in scents in ancient times, it is not used in perfume today. Maison Francis Kurkdjian also notes that the yellow amber stone is ornamental but has no smell. The amber in perfume is an accord built from labdanum, benzoin and vanilla.
- What is Ambroxan, and is it amber?
- Ambroxan and Ambrox are trade names for the same ambergris-type molecule (Ambroxan is Kao's name, Ambrox is Firmenich's). Firmenich discovered the structure of Ambrox in 1950, and Schalk et al. (JACS, 2012) report it is produced industrially by semisynthesis from sclareol, which comes from clary sage. It belongs to the woody-amber family of modern ingredients, not to the classic labdanum, benzoin and vanilla accord.
- Why did "oriental" perfumes become "amber"?
- Fragrances of the World renamed the family on Michael Edwards' Fragrance Wheel. Michael Edwards announced the change in June 2021, effective from mid-July: Oriental became Amber, Soft Oriental became Soft Amber, Floral Oriental became Floral Amber and Woody Oriental became Woody Amber. Some sites still show the old label.
- What is the best amber perfume for men?
- There is no single winner, but three picks in this guide suit men well. Interlude Man by Amouage is a smoky incense amber and ranks #19 among Scento's most-bought masculine perfumes (October 2025 – September 2026, Europe). Opium Pour Homme by Yves Saint Laurent is spicy and balsamic, and Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens is dry and resinous.
- What is a light amber perfume for summer?
- Ambra Calabria by Nishane is a good place to start. Nishane files it as citrus green, fresh floral and ambery, with bergamot, galbanum and green leaves over a base of sweet amber, musk and vanilla. Hermès describes L'Ambre des Merveilles as a blend of amber, patchouli and Balsam of Peru, a woody and sheer amber.
- How do I test an amber perfume before buying a full bottle?
- Wear a 2 ml vial on skin for a full day, because amber is a base-note accord that develops late. Maison Francis Kurkdjian lists tonka bean, coumarin and resins such as benzoin or incense as its base notes. Scento's 2 ml prices in this guide start at €5.90 for Khamrah and Amber Musk.
