The best cherry perfumes fall into five styles: liqueur and almond, tart and fresh, smoky and woody, gourmand and amber, and floral amber. This guide picks twelve originals across them, from Lost Cherry by Tom Ford to Carmina by Creed, each available as a 2 ml decant, with prices starting at €5.90.
In short:
- Cherry in perfume smells of almond first. Benzaldehyde, the molecule behind it, has an “odor resembling oil of bitter almond”.1
- There is no commercial cherry essential oil. The note is reconstructed from benzaldehyde and fruity esters.2
- The twelve picks are grouped by style, because a tart Morello cherry and a smoked dark cherry have little in common.
- Tom Ford’s cherry line grew from one perfume in 2018 to three in 2023.3

What cherry smells like in perfume
Cherry in a perfume is rarely a fruit note in the way a pear or a fig is. Perfumery treats it as a constructed accord, and one molecule does most of the work: benzaldehyde. PubChem records its odour as “characteristic odor or volatile oil of almond” and “odor resembling oil of bitter almond”.1 One perfumery glossary puts it plainly: “Cherry in perfumery is defined almost entirely by one molecule: benzaldehyde”. The same glossary notes that benzaldehyde occurs naturally in cherry pits, bitter almonds, apricot kernels and peach stones, and that there is no commercial cherry essential oil.2
That explains why so many cherry perfumes read as almond, marzipan or liqueur. Writing for Bois de Jasmin, Victoria describes the cherry accord as based on benzaldehyde, which has an almond-like scent. Because the molecule is present in cherry pits, it inspired “the cherry flavor most of us recognize from sweets, liqueurs and cough syrups”.8
Real cherries are more complicated
A 2010 study in the Flavour and Fragrance Journal found 52 volatiles in five sweet cherry cultivars and identified 40 aroma-active compounds. Benzaldehyde was among the common odorants responsible for the green, orange, almond and floral characters of the fruit.4 A 2025 study compared 37 cherry germplasm fruits and identified 363 volatiles in 14 classes.5 A perfumer cannot reproduce all of that, so the accord is an edited impression of cherry.
How perfumers build the accord
One perfumery formulation guide says benzaldehyde should be modified by a good percentage of para-tolualdehyde, in a ratio of 4:1 or 5:1 at most, and that the whole should not exceed 40% of the formula.6 You do not need the chemistry to enjoy a cherry perfume, but it helps you read a notes list. At least two of the perfumes below carry the evidence on their labels: Guerlain’s published ingredient list for Cherry Oud includes benzaldehyde,9 and so does Carolina Herrera’s for Very Good Girl Elixir.10 That is a fact about the label, not a claim about how much is in the bottle.
How we chose these twelve
Four criteria, in this order:
- Cherry is named in the maker’s own notes or description. A perfume that only smells a little fruity does not qualify.
- Each pick represents a different reading of cherry, grouped into five styles.
- Every perfume is sold at Scento as a 2 ml, 5 ml and 8 ml decant.
- Originals only. If you are looking for lower-priced alternatives to the Tom Ford trio, those have their own guides, linked in the Tom Ford section below.
If a note page is more useful than a pick list, the cherry note page shows every perfume built around the note, and the sour cherry and black cherry pages narrow it by shade.
Liqueur and almond cherries
This is the classic reading: cherry as liqueur, syrup and bitter almond, usually over rose and a sweet base. It is the style most people mean by “cherry perfume”.
Lost Cherry by Tom Ford
Tom Ford’s key notes are Black Cherry Accord, Bitter Almond, Griotte Sirup, Rose Absolute, Peru Balsam and Roasted Tonka, and the house says it “mingles black cherry with cherry liqueur accords and a touch of bitter almond”.11 It suits anyone who wants the cherry-liqueur idea at full volume, and it works best in cooler months. It is the cherry perfume that makes Scento’s feminine top 10: #10 among the most-bought feminine perfumes across Europe, based on paid decant units from October 2025 to September 2026.7
Lost Cherry as a 2 ml decant (€17.90; 8 ml €64.95)
Very Good Girl Elixir by Carolina Herrera
Carolina Herrera writes that “black cherry opens with juicy sweetness, balanced by bitter almond”. The top notes are black cherry and almond, the heart is rose and tuberose, and the base is vanilla and cocoa. The maker places it in the “ambery fruity floral” family.10 It is the more floral, more approachable route into the almond-cherry style, and the 2 ml is a gentle first step.
Very Good Girl Elixir as a 2 ml decant (€8.90; 8 ml €26.90)
Latte di Cherry by New Notes
The name promises something milky and sweet, and the notes agree: cherry, red berries, sweet orange and almond at the top, jasmine, Turkish rose, ylang ylang and hot spices in the heart, then vanilla, tonka bean, vetiver, sandalwood, amber and musk.12 It is the dessert end of the liqueur style, and the one to try if Lost Cherry feels too boozy.
Latte di Cherry as a 2 ml decant (€11.90; 8 ml €35.95)
Tart and fresh cherries
Here the cherry is sharper and less sugared. These are the better choices for warm weather, or for anyone who finds the liqueur style cloying.
Electric Cherry by Tom Ford
Tom Ford says Electric Cherry “merges the lush tartness of Morello cherry notes with exhilarating ginger”. The key notes also include a pistachio accord, jasmine sambac absolute, a sandalwood accord and ambrettolide.13 Morello is a sour cherry variety, so this is the pick that sits closest to the sour cherry note.
Electric Cherry as a 2 ml decant (€20.95; 8 ml €69.95)
Juliette by Juliette Has a Gun
The house describes it as “a woody fruity composition of Dark Cherry, Pink Berry, and Jasmine”. Dark cherry and pink pepper open it, cashmeran and jasmine absolute form the heart, and ambroxan and tonka bean the base.14 It is a light, peppery take that wears easily through the day, and at €6.90 for 2 ml it is among the lowest-priced ways into the group.
Juliette as a 2 ml decant (€6.90; 8 ml €24.90)
Smoky, woody and oud cherries
Darker and more grown-up: cherry set against smoke, resin, wood or oud. These suit autumn and winter evenings.
Cherry Smoke by Tom Ford
Tom Ford says Cherry Smoke “opens with the exquisite scent of dark cherry, enhanced by exotic saffron notes”. The key notes include a dark cherry flavour accord, a smoked wood accord, olibanum and Peru balsam resinoid.15 Choose it if you want cherry without much sweetness, and with a campfire edge.
Cherry Smoke as a 2 ml decant (€19.90; 8 ml €56.90)
Cherry Oud by Guerlain
Guerlain describes “black oud wood” that “is lacquered with a red cherry note”, alongside a duo of roses, Turkish rose absolute and Bulgarian rose essence, and a dusky leather accord.9 Harrods lists cinnamon and cardamom at the top, cherry accord and the two roses in the heart, and oud, musk and a leather accord in the base.16 It launched in global travel retail on 1 September 2022 alongside Oud Nude and Oud Khôl.17 Guerlain lists the 100 ml at 335,00 € on its French site, so a decant is a sensible way to find out whether oud and cherry suit you first.9
Cherry Oud as a 2 ml decant (€15.90; 8 ml €48.95)
La Vie est Belle L’Elixir Very Cherry by Lancôme
Lancôme’s own name for it is “La vie est belle Very Cherry”, and it calls it “Lancôme’s first ever woody cherry”. The top is a decadent black cherry accord, the heart velvety violet leaf absolute, and the base a warm oud accord with cocoa butter absolute and Madagascar vanilla.18 It is the friendliest oud-leaning cherry here, and at €6.90 for 2 ml it is also one of the lowest-priced to try.
La Vie est Belle L’Elixir Very Cherry as a 2 ml decant (€6.90; 8 ml €21.90)
Gourmand and amber cherries
Cherry as a sweet, edible accent over vanilla, tonka, coffee or amber. If this is your territory, our piece on why gourmand scents dominate winter 2026 covers the wider trend.
Black Opium Over Red by Yves Saint Laurent
YSL describes “a juicy red cherry accord enhancing the thrill of the iconic black coffee”.19 Basenotes lists notes of cherry, mandarin, jasmine blossom, orange blossom, black tea, coffee, Indonesian patchouli and Madagascan vanilla.20 Basenotes reports that Nathalie Lorson created it as a flanker of Black Opium, launched in January 2024.20 A good fit if you already like coffee-vanilla perfumes and want a brighter twist.
Black Opium Over Red as a 2 ml decant (€6.90; 8 ml €19.90)
Rouge Smoking by BDK Parfums
The top notes are Italian bergamot, a cherry accord and pink berries, the heart black vanilla and heliotrope, and the base ambroxan, cashmeran, tonka bean, labdanum and white musk.21 Perfumer Amélie Bourgeois says “cherry and pepper reveal its red side”. It is a dressier, more resinous gourmand than the others in this group.
Rouge Smoking as a 2 ml decant (€9.45; 8 ml €31.90)
Tonka Cola by Mancera
The most playful pick. Mancera lists Sicilian lemon, nutmeg and cinnamon stick and black cherry at the top, fizzy cola, Indonesian patchouli and orange flowers in the heart, and Brazilian tonka beans, benzoin, labdanum and powdery vanilla underneath.22 Think cherry cola rather than cherry liqueur. At €5.90 for 2 ml it is the lowest price in this guide.
Tonka Cola as a 2 ml decant (€5.90; 8 ml €18.95)
Floral amber cherry
Carmina by Creed
Creed describes “opening notes of plump black cherry and sensual rose de mai” that are “warmed by the golden embrace of saffron and cashmere wood”. The head also has pink pepper, the heart violet and peony, and the base frankincense, myrrh, amber and musk.23 It is the most formal of the twelve, for readers who want cherry as one part of a rose-and-amber composition rather than the headline.
Carmina as a 2 ml decant (€11.95; 8 ml €41.90)

Tom Ford’s cherry line in brief
Three of the twelve come from one house. Lost Cherry launched in 2018, and Electric Cherry and Cherry Smoke followed in 2023, completing the line.3 Hypebeast reported the 2023 launch prices as running from $240 to $390 USD for the 30 ml and 50 ml bottles respectively.24 Today Tom Ford lists each of the three at $405.00 for 1.7 fl oz on its US site.11,13,15 In the wider Scento data, Tom Ford ranks #6 among houses by share of decants, at 4.5% of paid decant units.7
Briefly: Lost Cherry is the liqueur and almond one, Electric Cherry the tart one, Cherry Smoke the smoky one. For the head-to-head and for lower-priced alternatives to them, see our guides to Lost Cherry alternatives and Cherry Smoke alternatives. For the house beyond cherry, there is our ranking of Tom Ford’s iconic perfumes.
How we compiled this
We chose perfumes where the maker’s own page names a cherry note, then sorted them into five styles so that each pick offers something different. Notes come from the makers’ pages and prices from the Scento catalogue, all read on 22 October 2026. Decants are hand-poured from original full-size bottles bought through authorised retail channels, with no dilution. Launch years appear only where a source states them. The Scento Fragrance Index figures come from Scento analysis of its own paid orders placed between October 2025 and September 2026; each decant unit a customer paid for counts once, whatever its size, and we publish ranks and shares only.

Your questions, answered
- What does cherry smell like in perfume?
- Mostly almond and liqueur. PubChem records the odour of benzaldehyde, the molecule behind the cherry accord, as resembling oil of bitter almond. Real cherries are more varied: a 2010 study in the Flavour and Fragrance Journal found 40 aroma-active compounds in five sweet cherry cultivars, with green, almond and floral characters. Bois de Jasmin describes the perfume version as the cherry flavour of sweets, liqueurs and cough syrups.
- Is there a natural cherry oil in perfume?
- No. Première Peau's glossary says there is no commercial cherry essential oil, so the note is reconstructed from benzaldehyde and fruity esters. Bois de Jasmin explains that the cherry accord is based on benzaldehyde, which has an almond-like scent and is present in cherry pits. That is why a perfume's cherry note is an accord rather than an extract.
- Why do cherry perfumes smell like almond or marzipan?
- Because the same molecule carries both smells. Première Peau notes that benzaldehyde occurs naturally in cherry pits and bitter almonds, and Bois de Jasmin says the cherry accord is built on it. Some makers state the almond outright: Tom Ford lists bitter almond in Lost Cherry, and Carolina Herrera says Very Good Girl Elixir's black cherry is balanced by bitter almond.
- What is the difference between Lost Cherry, Cherry Smoke and Electric Cherry?
- Tom Ford says Lost Cherry mingles black cherry with cherry liqueur accords and a touch of bitter almond. Cherry Smoke opens with dark cherry and saffron, with a smoked wood accord and olibanum. Electric Cherry merges the tartness of Morello cherry with ginger. In short: liqueur, smoke and tart. Lost Cherry came first, in 2018; the other two followed in 2023.
- Which cherry perfume is less sweet or fresher?
- Two of the twelve lean tart rather than sweet. Tom Ford says Electric Cherry merges the lush tartness of Morello cherry notes with ginger, and its notes add jasmine sambac and a sandalwood accord. Juliette Has a Gun describes Juliette as a woody fruity composition of dark cherry, pink berry and jasmine, with pink pepper at the top and ambroxan in the base.
- What is a good dark or black cherry perfume?
- Three picks suit a darker reading. Tom Ford says Cherry Smoke opens with the scent of dark cherry, enhanced by saffron, over a smoked wood accord. Lancôme calls La vie est belle Very Cherry its first ever woody cherry, with a decadent black cherry accord. Creed describes Carmina as opening with plump black cherry and rose de mai, warmed by saffron and cashmere wood.
- What is an affordable cherry perfume to sample?
- Scento's retail prices for a 2 ml decant, read on 22 October 2026, start at €5.90 for Tonka Cola by Mancera. La Vie est Belle L'Elixir Very Cherry by Lancôme, Black Opium Over Red by Yves Saint Laurent and Juliette by Juliette Has a Gun are €6.90 each. A 2 ml decant costs more per ml than a full bottle; the saving is in trying before you commit.
- What is the difference between sour cherry and cherry in perfume?
- Sour cherry is sharper and less sugared. Tom Ford's Electric Cherry uses Morello cherry, a sour variety, which the house pairs with ginger. The wider cherry style, such as Lost Cherry, leans on liqueur and bitter almond for sweetness. Scento has note pages for both cherry and sour cherry if you want to browse every perfume built around each.
