A chypre is a perfume built on a warm, dry, mossy accord of bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum.1 The best chypre perfumes to start with, grouped by style, are Gris Dior and Bois d’Argent (classic and mossy), Aventus and Sì (fruity), Perles de Lalique and Gucci Rush (floral), and Narciso Rodriguez For Her Eau de Parfum Intense (modern musky).
- Chypre is pronounced “sheep-ra”. It is the French for Cyprus, not the cypress tree.1
- The family is named after Chypre by François Coty, launched in 1917.1
- Oakmoss is not banned. Two oakmoss allergens are, and the rest is capped at 0.1% of a fine fragrance.2,3
- Every pick below is called a chypre by its house or by a major fragrance database, and all ten are in the Scento catalogue.

What makes a perfume a chypre
The Perfume Society describes chypre fragrances as warm and dry, almost all built round a woody, mossy accord of bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum, the last coming from the cistus or “rock rose” plant.1 The name is the French for Cyprus, and it is often wrongly linked to the cypress tree.1 Coty launched a hugely successful scent also called Chypre in 1917, and the family took its name from it.1
The Société Française des Parfumeurs classification, written up by D. Boubat, says the same thing in perfumer’s terms: the name comes from Chypre de Coty 1917, and the major character is an accord of bergamot, patchouli, cistus labdanum and oakmoss.5 Osmetheca, a secondary source, reads Coty’s codification as a three-material backbone: bergamot at the top, cistus labdanum and oakmoss in the base.6
Because the structure is so firm, the family branches easily. The classification lists chypre qualifiers for animalic, citrus, fruity, green, ambery, leathery and woody variants.5 Guerlain dates its first fruity chypre to 1919: “Mitsouko is the first fruity chypre fragrance in the perfume world”.7 Fougères are close relatives. The same classification says they start from a chypre structure and add lavender, geranium and coumarin.5 For the wider map of families, see our guide to fragrance families.
Where the three materials come from
Each pillar of the accord has a narrow home. Bergamot is grown only in a small area of Calabria, where just over 1,400 hectares of planted fields produce almost 90% of the world’s total bergamot crop.4 Givaudan puts it the same way for the oil: ninety per cent of the world’s production of bergamot oil is sourced from crop to factory in Calabria.8 Our note on bergamot in perfume covers the citrus side in more detail.
Labdanum comes from the cistus shrub. Givaudan says its labdanum resinoid, made in Spain from Cistus ladaniferus, gives roundness and body to chypre and oriental accords.9 Biolandes notes that cistus is harvested mainly in southern Spain today.10 Browse perfumes built on it on our labdanum note page.
Oakmoss is a lichen. Biolandes says it is gathered from young oaks that grow in Macedonia and Morocco at altitudes of 600 to 1,100 metres, and calls it an essential ingredient in chypre accords, above all to improve the composition’s persistence on the skin.11 It is also the ingredient that changed most, which is the next section. Perfumes that carry it are listed on our oakmoss note page.
Oakmoss rules: why modern chypres changed
Oakmoss is regulated, not banned. Among the substances Regulation (EU) 2017/1410 bans are two oakmoss molecules, atranol and chloroatranol, which it describes as the fragrance allergens that caused the highest number of contact allergy cases in past years and as natural components of oak moss and treemoss extracts.12 From 23 August 2019, cosmetic products containing them could no longer be placed on the Union market. From 23 August 2021, they could no longer be made available on it.12
IFRA, the industry’s own standards body, sets the rest. IFRA’s oakmoss standard (43rd Amendment, archived 2018) says atranol and chloroatranol should each be below 100 ppm in oak moss extracts, and that extracts used in fragrance compounds must not contain added tree moss.2 IFRA caps oakmoss extracts at 0.1% of a finished fine fragrance.2,3 Suppliers now sell oakmoss extracts made to a low-atranol process in line with IFRA and European rules.11
The rulebook keeps moving. IFRA says its 51st Amendment introduces 47 new Standards, bringing the total to 263, with an implementation deadline of 30 October 2025 for existing creations.13 Separately, Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 adds individual labelling for 56 additional fragrance allergens. Since 31 July 2026, cosmetic products that do not comply may no longer be placed on the EU market, and products placed earlier may stay on sale until 31 July 2028.14
None of this removed the chypre. It is the reason modern chypres tend to lean on patchouli, vetiver and low-atranol moss or moss accords, and why so many listings say “modern chypre”. Our explainer on IFRA rules and perfume reformulations goes deeper.
How we chose
Each pick had to be described as a chypre by its own house or by a major fragrance database, and to be in the Scento catalogue on 30 October 2026. Where the sources disagree, we say so, as with Sì below. Perfumes were left out where the house itself does not call them a chypre and the databases disagree.
Classic and mossy chypres
These stay closest to Coty’s skeleton: citrus on top, a floral or woody middle, moss and resin underneath.
Gris Dior by Dior
Dior lists it as a unisex eau de parfum with chypre notes and describes “a mysterious chypre trail punctuated with notes of citrus, rose, violet and then oak moss”.15 It suits anyone who wants the mossy classic shape with a floral turn, worn in cooler weather or in the evening. Gris Dior on Scento
Bois d’Argent by Dior
Fragrantica files it as a woody chypre for women and men, launched in 2004 and composed by Annick Menardo.16 The notes run through iris, cypress, juniper, myrrh, patchouli, honey and leather, which makes it the driest, most resinous pick here. Bois d’Argent on Scento
Fruity chypres
Fruit over a mossy base is a lineage that, by Guerlain’s account, goes back to 1919.7 These four are the modern versions.
Aventus by Creed
Fragrantica calls it a chypre fruity fragrance for men, launched in 2010.17 Creed’s notes pair apple, blackcurrant, pineapple and bergamot with birch and jasmine, over a base that includes oakmoss.18 Aventus is the second most-bought perfume on Scento in Europe overall, and the highest-ranked chypre among our picks (Scento Fragrance Index, Oct 2025 – Sep 2026). Our Aventus review covers wear and longevity. Aventus on Scento
Aventus for Her by Creed
Fragrantica files this one as a chypre fruity fragrance for women, launched in 2016.19 Green apple, bergamot, pink pepper and violet open it, with rose, sandalwood and styrax in the heart and blackcurrant and peach below. It suits wearers who want the fruit-and-moss idea in a floral frame. Aventus for Her on Scento
Rouge Trafalgar by Dior
Dior lists it as a unisex eau de parfum with chypre and fruity notes, describing “raspberry and blackcurrant leaf notes against a velvety backdrop of patchouli and musks”.20 Fragrantica dates it to 2020.21 It suits berry lovers who want patchouli to keep the fruit from turning sugary. Rouge Trafalgar on Scento
Sì Eau de Parfum by Giorgio Armani
Armani’s Australian page describes “a fruity fragrance built around a modern chypre heart” and lists the scent family as chypre fruity.22 Its US page calls it fruity floral, so the label depends on the market.23 Fragrantica files it as chypre fruity, launched in 2013 with Christine Nagel as perfumer.24 The notes are blackcurrant nectar, rose de mai, freesia, patchouli and vanilla. It is the easiest on-ramp to the family for anyone used to sweeter perfumes. Sì on Scento
Floral chypres
Here the flowers lead and the moss and patchouli act as a dark floor.
Perles de Lalique by Lalique
Lalique states that “Perles de Lalique is a Chypre Eau de Parfum”, with Nathalie Lorson as perfumer.25 The house lists Bulgarian rose, orris, Bourbon pepper, patchouli and cashmere wood. Fragrantica dates it to 2006 and also lists oakmoss and vetiver.26 It suits those who want a rose-and-iris perfume with some earth under it. Perles de Lalique on Scento
Gucci Rush by Gucci
Gucci writes that, first presented in 1999, Gucci Rush is a sensual chypre floral fragrance, and also gives its olfactive family as chypre fruity, with Michel Almairac as master perfumer.27 The notes are a peach accord, gardenia and freesia, then rose and jasmine, with patchouli, vanilla and moss at the base. Gucci Rush on Scento
X For Women by Clive Christian
Clive Christian says “Mystique weaves through this floral chypre”, at a 20.00% perfume concentration.28 Peach, rhubarb, mandarin and bergamot open it, with jasmine, rose, orris and tuberose in the heart, then vanilla, patchouli and sandalwood. Fragrantica files it as chypre fruity and lists French labdanum in the base.29 It suits those who prefer the opulent end of the floral range. X For Women on Scento
Modern musky chypres
Narciso Rodriguez For Her Eau de Parfum Intense
Fragrantica files it as a chypre fruity fragrance for women, launched in 2025, with Sonia Constant as the nose.30 A retailer’s copy also sells it as a chypre amber: “Reveal your personality with this chypre amber fragrance”.31 The maker’s page lists peach, bergamot and white flowers over a musk heart, with vetiver and moss and warm amber and vanilla below.32 It suits those who want the dry, mossy shape in a soft, skin-close musk. For Her Eau de Parfum Intense on Scento
Leather chypres
Leather is one of the classic chypre qualifiers.5 Osmetheca writes that Femme by Rochas, from 1944, defined the leather chypre.6 Of the ten picks, Bois d’Argent is the only one with a leather edge. For the full leather family, read our best leather perfumes guide. If patchouli is what draws you to the family, our best patchouli perfumes list is the next stop.

Your questions, answered
- What is a chypre perfume?
- A chypre is a perfume built on a warm, dry, mossy accord. The Perfume Society says almost all chypres rest on bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum, the last from the cistus or rock rose plant. The Société Française des Parfumeurs classification adds that the family takes its name from Chypre de Coty, launched in 1917.
- How do you pronounce chypre?
- Chypre is pronounced "sheep-ra". The Perfume Society explains that the name is the French for Cyprus and, despite what is often suggested, has nothing to do with the cypress tree. The name goes back to François Coty's perfume Chypre, which the Perfume Society says he launched in 1917.
- Is oakmoss banned in perfume?
- No. Among the substances Regulation (EU) 2017/1410 bans in cosmetics are two oakmoss allergens, atranol and chloroatranol: not placed on the Union market from 23 August 2019 and not made available from 23 August 2021. Low-atranol oakmoss is still used, within IFRA's cap of 0.1% of a finished fine fragrance.
- What is the difference between a chypre and a fougère?
- The two families are related. The Société Française des Parfumeurs classification says fougères start from a chypre structure of bergamot, patchouli and oakmoss, and then add lavender, geranium and coumarin. A chypre keeps the mossy, dry base without that aromatic lavender layer.
- What is a fruity chypre?
- A fruity chypre puts fruit over the mossy base. Guerlain says Mitsouko, from 1919, is the first fruity chypre in the perfume world. Today's examples in our list include Aventus, which Fragrantica files as chypre fruity, Giorgio Armani's Sì, and Dior's Rouge Trafalgar, which Dior lists with chypre and fruity notes.
- Are chypre perfumes masculine or feminine?
- Both. The structure has no gender, and the picks here cross the line. Dior lists Gris Dior as a unisex eau de parfum with chypre notes, Fragrantica files Bois d'Argent as a woody chypre for women and men, and Aventus is filed for men while Aventus for Her is filed for women.
- Why do modern chypres smell different from vintage ones?
- Oakmoss rules changed the recipe. Regulation (EU) 2017/1410 removed atranol and chloroatranol from cosmetics, and IFRA's oakmoss standard sets a limit of 0.1% in fine fragrance. Perfumers now lean on patchouli, vetiver and low-atranol moss or moss accords, which is why many listings say modern chypre.
- Which chypre is most popular on Scento?
- Aventus by Creed. It is the second most-bought perfume on Scento in Europe overall, and the highest-ranked chypre among our picks, according to the Scento Fragrance Index covering October 2025 to September 2026. Fragrantica files it as a chypre fruity fragrance for men, launched in 2010.
