How we picked the houses
Four things decided the list: how recognisable a house’s signature is, how deep its range runs, what European buyers choose with their own orders, and how easily you can try a perfume before committing to a bottle. Designer houses made up 35% of Scento’s paid decants between October 2025 and September 2026, so they are a large part of what people try1.
Each house gets one starting perfume that is in stock as a 2 ml, 5 ml and 8 ml vial. Where a house has a dedicated guide, the profile links to it for the full line-up.

How fashion houses turn style into fragrance
A fashion house usually brings one idea from the runway or the atelier into the bottle. Versace’s Eros draws on Greek mythology and the Medusa symbol17. Miss Dior was sprayed in the Avenue Montaigne salons in February 1947, a year after the house was founded5. Louis Vuitton has had a Master Perfumer since 2012, and its first perfume, Heures d’Absence, dates from 192713. In each case the fragrance carries the house’s image, which is why a bottle from a designer house often reads as instantly familiar.
Best houses for gifting
For gifts, the safe choices are the best-known perfumes of the most recognisable houses: Sauvage and J’adore from Dior, Libre from Yves Saint Laurent, Light Blue from Dolce & Gabbana and Shalimar from Guerlain. This is reasoning rather than data, but a well-known name lowers the risk of a miss. A 2 ml vial lets the recipient try the scent before anyone commits to a full bottle.
Who makes designer perfumes
Designer perfumes are mostly made by beauty groups under ownership or licence. L’Oréal has held the Armani licence since 1988, YSL Beauté since 2008 and Valentino since 20194,7,9. Estée Lauder acquired Jo Malone London in 1999 and has owned Tom Ford outright since 202311,3. LVMH owns Dior, Guerlain and Louis Vuitton’s perfume business5,2,6. Dolce & Gabbana set up its own perfume company in 202210, and Euroitalia acquired the Versace licence in 20058.
Designer or niche
Between October 2025 and September 2026, niche houses took 65% of paid decants at Scento and designer houses 35%, with Scento’s own house perfumes excluded1. The niche share rose from 61% in October 2025 to March 2026 to 66% in April to September 20261. Seven of Scento’s top ten houses are niche. Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford and Dior are the designer exceptions1.
If you are weighing the two, our guide to designer against niche perfume sets out how the two compare.

Your questions, answered
- What are the best designer perfume brands?
- For most people they are Dior, Guerlain, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Versace, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford and Jo Malone London. The Scento Fragrance Index shows Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford and Dior as the only designer houses in Scento's top ten by decant share, with Louis Vuitton first at 9.5%.
- Which designer perfume is most popular at Scento?
- Imagination by Louis Vuitton ranks number 1 in Europe at Scento, according to the Scento Fragrance Index for October 2025 to September 2026. Ombre Nomade, also by Louis Vuitton, ranks number 4, and Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford ranks number 18.
- Who makes designer perfumes?
- Mostly beauty groups under ownership or licence. L'Oréal says it has held the Armani licence since 1988, YSL Beauté since 2008 and Valentino since 2019. Estée Lauder acquired Jo Malone London in 1999 and Tom Ford in 2023. LVMH covers Dior, Guerlain and Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana set up its own perfume company in 2022, and Euroitalia acquired the Versace licence in 2005.
- Which is the oldest designer perfume house?
- Guerlain is the oldest house on this list. LVMH says its story begins in Paris in 1828, when Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain opened his first boutique on rue de Rivoli. Dior is much younger: LVMH dates its first fragrance, Miss Dior, to 12 February 1947.
- Should I buy designer or niche perfume?
- Both are popular. In the Scento Fragrance Index, designer houses took 35% of paid decants and niche houses 65% between October 2025 and September 2026. The niche share rose from 61% to 66% across that period. Trying a 2 ml vial first is a low-risk way to compare a designer and a niche scent.
- Which designer houses are best for gifting?
- The safest choices are the best-known perfumes of the most recognisable houses, such as Sauvage and J'adore from Dior, Libre from Yves Saint Laurent, Light Blue from Dolce & Gabbana and Shalimar from Guerlain. This is reasoning rather than data, but a familiar name lowers the risk of a miss, and a 2 ml vial lets the recipient try it first.
- How do fashion houses turn their style into fragrance?
- They carry one idea from the house into the bottle. WWD reported that Versace's Eros draws on Greek mythology and the Medusa symbol. LVMH says Miss Dior was sprayed in the salons of Avenue Montaigne in 1947, and Louis Vuitton says its first perfume, Heures d'Absence, dates from 1927.
