Best Hermès Perfumes: 13 Picks From Jardin to Twilly

12 min read

Key takeaways

There is no single best Hermès perfume; Terre d'Hermès is the only one in Scento's Europe-wide top lists, at #10 among masculine perfumes (Scento Fragrance Index, October 2025 to September 2026).

  • Hermès perfumes fall into four lines: Parfums-Jardins (first created in 2003), Terre d'Hermès, Twilly d'Hermès and the Merveilles (Hermès).
  • Jean-Claude Ellena became exclusive perfumer in 2004 and Christine Nagel was appointed exclusive perfumer in 2016 (Comité Colbert).
  • All 13 picks can be sampled as Scento decants from 2 ml, at €6.90 to €8.90.

Terre d’Hermès is the only Hermès perfume in Scento’s Europe-wide top lists, at #10 among masculine perfumes. All 13 picks below can be tried as 2 ml decants from €6.90.

In short

  • The 13 picks are grouped by line, not ranked by quality, and the guide carries no ratings.
  • Jean-Claude Ellena became the Maison’s exclusive perfumer in 2004, and Christine Nagel joined him in 20141.
  • The Jardins are the fresh, garden-led choice; Terre is mineral and woody; Twilly is ginger and spice; the Merveilles are amber.
  • Terre d’Hermès is #10 among the most-bought masculine perfumes across Europe in the Scento Fragrance Index, October 2025 to September 2026.

How we chose these Hermès perfumes

We sorted the house by four criteria rather than by taste. The first is the line: the Parfums-Jardins, Terre d’Hermès, Twilly d’Hermès or the Merveilles. The second is Hermès’ own description of each perfume’s style and its list of main raw materials, which we use as a neutral key. The third is the season, and the fourth is the perfumer behind each bottle.

The perfumer matters because the house has had two eras. Jean-Claude Ellena became the Maison’s exclusive perfumer in 20041 and retired in 20164. Christine Nagel was appointed exclusive perfumer and Director of the Maison’s olfactory heritage in 2016, after joining him in 20141.

The last criterion is practical: every pick can be sampled at Scento from 2 ml. Hermès’ H24 line is paused here at the moment, so it is not covered. Looking for cheaper alternatives to a Hermès scent is a different question, and our Terre d’Hermès alternatives guide handles it.

The Parfums-Jardins: fresh garden perfumes

The Jardins began in 2003 with Un Jardin en Méditerranée2. Ellena described his method in 2015: “We choose a place. I go there. And I have to find the idea on the spot.”7 A Fragrantica columnist calls him “a master of minimalism”20.

Un Jardin en Méditerranée by Hermès

Hermès calls it the first in the Parfums-Jardins collection, created in 2003 around a secret Tunisian garden2. The style is fruity and woody, with fig tree, green lentisk and pink laurel, and Hermès labels the olfactory emotion “Fresh, Delicate”2. Ellena said it was meant to be sold for only one year, and that six months after launch its success meant it was kept7. It suits warm days and anyone who wants a green, fig-led start to the house.

Un Jardin en Méditerranée as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)

Un Jardin sur le Nil by Hermès

Created in 2005, it is an olfactory journey to the garden islands in Aswan, Egypt5. It combines tangy green mango with delicate lotus and elegant sycamore, and carries the same “Fresh, Delicate” label5. Hermès presents the Jardins as “olfactory strolls to share”5, and this is the one to try if you want the green-and-woody side of the series.

Un Jardin sur le Nil as a 2 ml decant (€7.90)

Le Jardin de Monsieur Li by Hermès

Hermès describes a Chinese garden poised between reality and imagination, juxtaposing delicate sambac jasmine, tangy kumquat and explosive bergamot6. The Perfume Society called it a fifth addition to the Garden Perfume collection21; it launched in 20157. It is the floral and vegetal choice, for readers who like jasmine kept bright and citrus-edged.

Le Jardin de Monsieur Li as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)

Un Jardin sur la Lagune by Hermès

Christine Nagel created it in 2019, with Venice as the setting and luminous magnolia, enveloping pittosporum and carnal Madonna lily on the list8. Hermès labels it “Fresh, Delicate” and floral and woody8. One columnist hears it as denser than the Ellena Jardins, with an “evident sweetness to the base”20, which makes it a good test of the change of perfumer.

Un Jardin sur la Lagune as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)

Un Jardin à Cythère by Hermès

Hermès calls it a surprising garden that is neither green nor floral, but “blond”9. It combines grasses, olive wood and fresh pistachio, and the press kit notes there is no pistachio extract in the real materials22. Nagel called 2023 “the year of astonishment”10. Hermès labels it citrus and woody.

Un Jardin à Cythère as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)

Terre d’Hermès: the mineral woody line

Terre is the only Hermès line in the Scento Fragrance Index’s Europe-wide top lists (Scento analysis of the Scento Fragrance Index). Terre d’Hermès is #10 among the most-bought masculine perfumes across Europe from October 2025 to September 2026, above Ombre Leather by Tom Ford (#11), Dior Homme Intense (#13) and Sauvage by Dior (#17). The same list puts Imagination by Louis Vuitton at #1; see our Louis Vuitton guide.

Terre d’Hermès by Hermès

Ellena created it in 2006, combining the strength of cedar and the radiance of grapefruit with a vibrant touch of flint11. Hermès labels it mineral and woody, with an olfactory emotion of “Spicy, Dry”11. It is #10 among the most-bought masculine perfumes across Europe in the Scento Fragrance Index, October 2025 to September 2026. Hermès itself calls Terre “this great men’s classic”3. This is the 2006 eau de toilette, not the 2025 Eau de Parfum Intense, which we do not stock and which Hermès says has been a great success, especially with young customers3.

Terre d’Hermès as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)

Terre d’Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver by Hermès

In 2018, Nagel explored her vision of Terre and created this version around the depth of vetiver, the liveliness of green bergamot and Sichuan pepper12. Hermès calls it an intense, woody fragrance12. If vetiver is the note that draws you in, our vetiver note guide explains where it sits in a perfume.

Twilly d’Hermès: ginger, spice and silk ribbons

Hermès writes the Twilly line for “young women” and “the Hermès girls”13,17. All four are by Nagel, and ginger runs through most of them.

Twilly d’Hermès by Hermès

Nagel created it in 2017 with candied ginger, delicate tuberose and milky notes of sandalwood, and each bottle carries a hand-tied silk ribbon that is unique13. WWD reported it on sale from 28 August 2017, quoting Nagel on the ginger: “It’s really an enormous quantity.”23 The style is floral and spicy.

Twilly d’Hermès as a 2 ml decant (€7.90)

Twilly d’Hermès Eau Poivrée by Hermès

Created in 2019, it pairs sassy pink peppercorn with a tender rose and a deep patchouli14. Hermès labels it simply spicy14. It suits readers who want a spicier Twilly with rose at the centre.

Twilly d’Hermès Eau Poivrée as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)

Twilly d’Hermès Eau Ginger by Hermès

Hermès’ press kit calls it the third to join the Twilly d’Hermès tribe15. The notes are candied ginger, generous peony and lively cedar, in a floral style15.

Twilly d’Hermès Eau Ginger as a 2 ml decant (€7.90)

Tutti Twilly d’Hermès by Hermès

Hermès describes gentle ginger blossom, mellow lychee and enveloping musk16, in a lychee-red bottle, on sale from September 202317. The style is floral and fruity.

Tutti Twilly d’Hermès as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)

The Merveilles: amber without a flower

The Merveilles are the warm side of the house. Both picks are labelled woody and amber by Hermès, and our amber note guide shows what that family smells like.

Eau des Merveilles by Hermès

Hermès says Ralf Schwieger and Nathalie Feisthauer created it in 2004 as a sparkling fragrance for women with not a flower in sight19. The notes are enveloping benzoin, spicy elemi and sparkling bigarade orange18. For another take on this family, see our quiet luxury perfumes guide.

Eau des Merveilles as a 2 ml decant (€8.90)

L’Ambre des Merveilles by Hermès

Ellena continues the exploration of the Merveilles with the uniqueness of amber: a captivating amber, a deep patchouli and a voluptuous Balsam of Peru19. Hermès calls it the third opus of the Merveilles constellation, and Ellena describes it as “An amber wood for women, surprising and magical.”19

L’Ambre des Merveilles as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)

Hermès perfume in numbers

Perfume and Beauty generated €489 million in 2025, against €535 million in 2024, a fall of 8.6% as published and 7.6% at constant exchange rates24. That is 3% of consolidated sales3. In the first half of 2026 it recorded €233 million against €248 million, down 6.1% as published and 4.5% at constant exchange rates25. Hermès notes that summer shows up each year through the Parfums-Jardins and Colognes collections3.

How to choose your Hermès perfume

  • By season. For summer, start with the Jardins, which Hermès places alongside its colognes as the summer collections3. Nil, Méditerranée and Lagune all carry the “Fresh, Delicate” label2,5,8.
  • By feel. Dry and mineral points to Terre, whose label is “Spicy, Dry”11. Warm and resinous points to the Merveilles. Spice with ginger points to Twilly.
  • By sampling first. The 2 ml decants cost €6.90 to €8.90, so you can wear a perfume for a few days before buying a full bottle. Decants cost more per ml than a full bottle; the saving is in trying a scent before committing.

The full range is on the Hermès house page.

How we compiled this

Hermès product details come from text extracts of hermes.com, Hermès press kits and Hermès finance documents, read on 26 October 2026. We do not print Hermès boutique prices because the live pages could not be opened. Prices shown are Scento’s one-time retail prices from the catalogue on the same date. The rank comes from the Scento Fragrance Index (Europe, October 2025 to September 2026) and covers ranks only. Each pick was checked as in stock before it was included.

Your questions, answered

What is the best Hermès perfume?
There is no single answer, so choose by line, season and perfumer. The only Hermès perfume in Scento's Europe-wide top lists is Terre d'Hermès, at #10 among masculine perfumes from October 2025 to September 2026 in the Scento Fragrance Index. Hermès itself calls Terre this great men's classic in its 2025 registration document.
What is the best Hermès perfume for women?
Hermès writes the Twilly line for young women and the Hermès girls, and calls Eau des Merveilles a sparkling fragrance for women with not a flower in sight. Jean-Claude Ellena describes L'Ambre des Merveilles as an amber wood for women, surprising and magical. Hermès presents the Jardins as olfactory strolls to share. This guide gives no ratings.
What is the best Hermès perfume for men?
Terre d'Hermès is the clearest choice: created by Jean-Claude Ellena in 2006 with grapefruit, cedar and flint, according to Hermès. Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver, created by Christine Nagel in 2018, adds vetiver, green bergamot and Sichuan pepper. In the Scento Fragrance Index, Terre d'Hermès is #10 among masculine perfumes across Europe, October 2025 to September 2026.
What are the Hermès Jardin perfumes?
They are the Parfums-Jardins. Hermès says Un Jardin en Méditerranée, created in 2003, was the first. Un Jardin sur le Nil followed in 2005, Le Jardin de Monsieur Li in 2015 (announced as the fifth addition), Un Jardin sur la Lagune in 2019 and Un Jardin à Cythère in 2023. Ellena said of his method: we choose a place, and I go there.
Which Twilly d'Hermès should I choose?
This guide covers four Twilly perfumes. The original Twilly pairs candied ginger, tuberose and sandalwood. Eau Poivrée uses pink peppercorn, rose and patchouli. Eau Ginger combines candied ginger, peony and cedar. Tutti Twilly, on sale from September 2023, is built on ginger blossom, lychee and musk. All four decant from 2 ml at Scento, from €6.90.
Who makes Hermès perfumes?
Hermès has two recent in-house perfumers. According to Comité Colbert, Jean-Claude Ellena became the Maison's exclusive perfumer in 2004. Christine Nagel joined him in 2014 and was appointed exclusive perfumer and Director of the Maison's olfactory heritage in 2016. Now Smell This reports that Ellena retired in 2016.
Which Hermès perfume is best for summer?
Start with the Jardins. Hermès says summer shows up each year through its Parfums-Jardins and Colognes collections. Un Jardin sur le Nil, Un Jardin en Méditerranée and Un Jardin sur la Lagune all carry Hermès' olfactory emotion label of Fresh, Delicate. Terre d'Hermès, labelled Spicy, Dry, is a drier alternative.
Can I try Hermès perfumes before buying a bottle?
Yes. All 13 Hermès perfumes in this guide are available as Scento decants, hand-poured from original full-size bottles, in 2 ml, 5 ml and 8 ml vials, plus a 30 ml bottle decant. The 2 ml size costs between €6.90 and €8.90, so you can wear a scent for a few days before committing to a full bottle.
