The best Jean Paul Gaultier perfume depends on the line you wear. Le Male, launched in 1995, is the house classic for lavender and vanilla.1 Le Beau Paradise Garden suits summer, Scandal Pour Homme suits caramel lovers, and La Favorite is the newest women’s launch.2 Twelve perfumes are compared below, with 2 ml prices.
- Men’s lines: Le Male (3 perfumes), Le Beau (2) and Scandal Pour Homme (2). Women’s line: five perfumes, from Scandal to the 2026 La Favorite.
- Choose by family and concentration first: eau de toilette, Eau de Parfum Intense or Parfum, as labelled by the maker.
- Puig calls La Favorite “the first feminine launch by Jean Paul Gaultier in ten years”.2
- A 2 ml decant is the low-risk way to test a bottle before committing to one: 2 ml prices here run from €6.90 to €10.90.

How to choose a Jean Paul Gaultier perfume
Jean Paul Gaultier is one house with several quite different personalities, so the useful question is which family you like, not which bottle is “best”. Four criteria do most of the work.
Start with the family
The picks span several styles. Le Male is a lavender-led aromatic. Le Beau Paradise Garden is a green aquatic woody. Scandal Pour Homme and its Le Parfum are amber woody. La Favorite is a floral amber, Scandal is a chypre built on honey, and La Belle is an oriental vanilla. If you already know you like one of these structures, you can skip straight to that section.
Read the concentration label
Jean Paul Gaultier labels Le Male as an eau de toilette and Le Male Le Parfum as an Eau de Parfum Intense.6 Le Male Elixir is sold as a Parfum.7 Le Male Le Parfum arrived in 2020.8 The house ladder runs eau de toilette, then Eau de Parfum Intense, then Parfum, and the same logic applies to Scandal Pour Homme. Longevity depends on far more than the label, so this guide quotes no hour counts. Our guides to perfume concentrations and how long EDT, EDP and parfum last explain the differences, and long-lasting designer fragrances includes Le Male Elixir.
Think about season and occasion
Fresh, green and coconut-tinged perfumes such as Le Beau Paradise Garden sit best in warm weather. Caramel, honey, benzoin and tobacco notes, as in Le Male Elixir and Scandal Le Parfum, usually feel better in autumn and winter. Le Male and Scandal Pour Homme work across the year.
Test before you buy a bottle
Scento analysis of Jean Paul Gaultier’s newest launch shows why sampling matters. La Favorite’s 30 ml eau de parfum launched at €80.5 A 2 ml decant at €10.90 costs about 14% of that 30 ml bottle. That is a calculation, not a saving claim: per millilitre a decant costs more than a full bottle, and the point is the cost of finding out whether you like the scent. Most customers test this way: 76% of the decants bought at Scento from October 2025 to September 2026 were 2 ml (Scento Fragrance Index, Europe).
The Le Male family
Le Male is the reason most people know the house. Puig, which owns the brand, says it remains “one of the world’s top three best-selling masculine fragrances”.1 That is the owner’s claim, so treat it as a company statement. Three versions are worth knowing, and they share lavender as their backbone. If you want the perfumers’ wider story, our guide to Maison Francis Kurkdjian perfumes covers the man who created the original.
Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier
Le Male (the original eau de toilette) made its debut in 1995 and was crafted by master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, according to Puig, and described as “a blend of fresh mint, aromatic lavender, and warm vanilla”.1 Kurkdjian told The Glass Magazine in 2014 that the brief was about “the idea of musk, of ‘clean sweat’”, and that the lavender accord came from the smell of 1950s men’s hairdressers.9 Choose it if you want the benchmark: clean, sweet and instantly recognisable, in the sailor-shirt torso bottle.
Le Male as a 2 ml decant (€7.90), 5 ml €14.50, 8 ml €22.95.
Many readers arrive here looking for something similar for less. We cover that in a separate guide to Le Male alternatives.
Le Male Le Parfum by Jean Paul Gaultier
This 2020 version is labelled Eau de Parfum Intense by the house.6 Fragrantica reports that lavender and cardamom remain the signature notes from the original together with vanilla, with iris in the heart.8 The house’s best-sellers page marks it, along with the original eau de toilette, as a “best seller”.6 Choose it if you like Le Male but want it deeper and more spiced.
Le Male Le Parfum as a 2 ml decant (€7.90), 5 ml €14.50, 8 ml €22.95.
Le Male Elixir by Jean Paul Gaultier
Le Male Elixir is the house’s own “woody aromatic amber” Parfum. It opens with mint, moves to lavender, and rests on benzoin and tonka bean “between honey and tobacco”.7 Fragrantica dates it to 2023 and names Quentin Bisch as the perfumer.10 Choose it if the original feels too fresh and you want sweetness with some smoke.
Le Male Elixir as a 2 ml decant (€6.90), 5 ml €12.90, 8 ml €21.90.
Le Beau for warm weather
Le Beau is the men’s line built around tonka bean and a fresh opening, rather than the barbershop lavender of Le Male.
Le Beau Paradise Garden by Jean Paul Gaultier
Announced in January 2024 as a new Le Beau edition, it was composed by Quentin Bisch as a woody, green aquatic melody.11 The maker lists coconut water, green fig and sandalwood, and describes “the salty freshness of coconut” mingling with tonka bean, ginger and mint.12 Choose it for hot days, holidays and offices where you want something light but not soapy.
Le Beau Paradise Garden as a 2 ml decant (€6.90), 5 ml €14.50, 8 ml €22.95.
Le Beau Narcisse by Jean Paul Gaultier
The maker describes it as an amber musky woody eau de parfum: “On his skin, bergamot bursts with freshness. Then musk emerges, carnal. At last, tonka bean leaves a resolutely voluptuous trail.”13 Fragrantica lists it as a 2026 release, a secondary source worth rechecking.14 Choose it if you like musky, skin-close scents that stay warm rather than sporty.
Le Beau Narcisse as a 2 ml decant (€6.90), 5 ml €12.90, 8 ml €22.90.
Scandal Pour Homme
The men’s Scandal pair is for people who like gourmand sweetness in a fresh frame.
Scandal Pour Homme by Jean Paul Gaultier
Fragrantica presented it in June 2021 as “the first men’s fragrance” of the Scandal collection, with caramel, tonka beans and vetiver, and a bottle “designed to be refilled”.15 Clary sage and mandarin orange open it. The maker calls it “Amber Woody” and talks of “redefining caramel with chic”.16 Choose it if you want a sweet-but-sharp daily wear.
Scandal Pour Homme as a 2 ml decant (€6.90), 5 ml €12.90, 8 ml €20.90.
Scandal Pour Homme Le Parfum by Jean Paul Gaultier
Presented in late June 2022 as an Eau de Parfum Intense, it carries “notes of sandalwood and tonka bean, wrapped in the power of geranium”.17 The maker files it under “Ambré Boisé”, amber woody.18 Choose it if the eau de toilette appeals but you want a drier, woodier finish.
Scandal Pour Homme Le Parfum as a 2 ml decant (€8.90), 5 ml €15.90, 8 ml €25.90.
Jean Paul Gaultier perfumes for women
Five women’s perfumes follow, from the 2017 Scandal to the 2026 La Favorite.
La Favorite by Jean Paul Gaultier
Puig describes La Favorite as “the first feminine launch by Jean Paul Gaultier in ten years”.2 WWD reported that Givaudan’s Amélie Jacquin and Quentin Bisch created it, that the bottle nods to Gaultier’s Fragile bottle from 1999, and that the global launch was set to begin in early August 2026, starting in Europe.5 The maker’s notes are Queen of the Night, benzoin and tonka bean, classed as a floral amber.19 Puig also cites “promising early momentum” for the launch.2 Choose it if you want a floral that is, in the words of Frédéric Appaire, quoted by WWD, “a beautiful floral without being that well-behaved”.5
La Favorite as a 2 ml decant (€10.90), 5 ml €19.90, 8 ml €29.95.
Scandal by Jean Paul Gaultier
Puig’s José Manuel Albesa told WWD that the 2017 Scandal is “very daytime with gardenia and blood orange”, with a “night side with honey mixed with patchouli”.20 The Moodie Davitt Report called it a chypre, with a stopper shaped as a gold pair of female legs, and credited Daphné Bugey with Fabrice Pellegrin and Christophe Raynaud.21 Choose it if you want a sweet, bold chypre that is more distinctive than a typical floral.
Scandal as a 2 ml decant (€7.90), 5 ml €16.90, 8 ml €26.90.
Scandal Le Parfum by Jean Paul Gaultier
Presented in late June 2022 as an Eau de Parfum Intense, it wraps black vanilla in jasmine and “gourmet scents of salted caramel”.22 Fragrantica’s launch report calls it a floral amber.22 Choose it if you found the original too sharp and want the sweetness turned up for evenings.
Scandal Le Parfum as a 2 ml decant (€8.90), 5 ml €15.90, 8 ml €25.90.
La Belle by Jean Paul Gaultier
TRBusiness classed La Belle as an oriental vanilla with vetiver and pear.23 Puig officially presented it, with Le Beau, on 1 July 2019.24 Choose it if you want a soft, fruity vanilla that is easy to wear.
La Belle as a 2 ml decant (€6.90), 5 ml €14.90, 8 ml €23.90.
Gaultier Divine Elixir by Jean Paul Gaultier
Fragrantica reported in May 2025 that the Elixir reinterprets Divine “with a richer, spicier character”: it opens with a salty accord, gives way to a creamy tuberose heart, and settles into a tonka bean base.25 The maker calls it a floral marine amber, with “untamed tuberose and magnetic tonka bean”.26 Puig names Gaultier Divine, with Le Male, among the house’s most iconic fragrances.4 Choose it if you like tuberose but want a salty, sunlit version.
Gaultier Divine Elixir as a 2 ml decant (€8.95), 5 ml €19.90, 8 ml €32.95.

Quentin Bisch and tonka bean: the modern Gaultier thread
Read across the picks and one pattern stands out. Francis Kurkdjian made the original Le Male; since then the house’s newer fragrances have leaned heavily on one perfumer, Quentin Bisch. Launch coverage, maker pages and Fragrantica’s perfume database credit him with or as the nose behind nine of the 12 picks in this guide: Le Male Le Parfum, Le Male Elixir, Le Beau Paradise Garden, Le Beau Narcisse, Scandal Pour Homme, Scandal Pour Homme Le Parfum, La Favorite, La Belle and Gaultier Divine Elixir. Le Beau Narcisse is credited by Fragrantica, a secondary source. For Gaultier Divine Elixir the credit is indirect: Fragrantica names Bisch as the creator of the original Divine that the Elixir reinterprets.25
Curious? Try Memo Paris Tonka Bean as a decant, from €16.90Try itThe second thread is the ingredient. Tonka bean appears in the maker or launch notes of seven of the 12 picks: Le Male Elixir, Le Beau Paradise Garden, Le Beau Narcisse, Scandal Pour Homme, Scandal Pour Homme Le Parfum, La Favorite and Gaultier Divine Elixir. That is reasoning drawn from the notes cited above, not a claim by the house. If tonka is the note you keep coming back to, our guide to tonka bean in perfume explains why it reads as a warmer cousin of vanilla, and the Gaultier range is a good place to test it. Who owns Jean Paul Gaultier perfumes
Puig’s annual report says the fashion business was founded by Jean Paul Gaultier in 1976, acquired by Puig in 2011, “followed by the fragrance business in 2016”.4 The Moodie Davitt Report noted in 2017 that Scandal was the first fragrance launch since Puig took over the licence from Beauté Prestige International.21 In its FY 2025 results, Puig said its brands hold three of the top 10 positions among global fragrance brands, with Rabanne, Carolina Herrera and Jean Paul Gaultier.3 WWD added in 2017 that Scandal was the first major fragrance project Puig had created with the designer since integrating his perfume business on 1 January 2016.20

Your questions, answered
- What is the most famous Jean Paul Gaultier perfume?
- Le Male is the house's best-known perfume. Puig, which owns the brand, says it debuted in 1995, was crafted by Francis Kurkdjian, and remains "one of the world's top three best-selling masculine fragrances", which is an owner claim. Puig's annual report also names Le Male and Gaultier Divine as the house's most iconic fragrances.
- What is the best Jean Paul Gaultier perfume for women?
- It depends on the style you like. La Favorite is a floral amber with Queen of the Night, benzoin and tonka bean. Scandal is a chypre with blood orange, honey, patchouli and gardenia. Scandal Le Parfum adds jasmine, salted caramel and vanilla. La Belle is an oriental vanilla with pear and vetiver, and Gaultier Divine Elixir is a salty tuberose.
- What is the difference between Le Male, Le Male Le Parfum and Le Male Elixir?
- Le Male is the 1995 eau de toilette with mint, lavender and vanilla. Le Male Le Parfum, an Eau de Parfum Intense from 2020, keeps lavender, cardamom and vanilla and adds iris. Le Male Elixir, a Parfum from 2023, centres on lavender, tonka bean and benzoin, with honey and tobacco facets. At Scento the 2 ml decants cost €7.90, €7.90 and €6.90.
- Does Jean Paul Gaultier perfume last long?
- Longevity depends on the concentration and on your skin, so this guide quotes no hour counts. The house labels Le Male as an eau de toilette, Le Male Le Parfum and Scandal Pour Homme Le Parfum as Eau de Parfum Intense, and Le Male Elixir as a Parfum. Scento's guides to concentrations and longevity explain how those labels differ.
- What is new from Jean Paul Gaultier in 2026?
- La Favorite is the headline launch. WWD reported that its global launch was set to begin in early August 2026, starting in Europe, and Puig calls it the first feminine launch by Jean Paul Gaultier in ten years, citing promising early momentum. Fragrantica also lists Le Beau Narcisse as a 2026 release; the maker describes bergamot, powdery musk and tonka bean.
- Which Jean Paul Gaultier perfume is best for summer?
- Le Beau Paradise Garden is the summer pick in this guide. Jean Paul Gaultier classes it as a green aquatic woody eau de parfum, with coconut water, green fig and sandalwood, plus tonka bean, ginger and mint. Quentin Bisch composed it, and Fragrantica reported it in January 2024. A 2 ml decant costs €6.90 at Scento.
- Who makes Jean Paul Gaultier perfumes?
- Puig makes and owns the fragrances. Its annual report says the fashion business was founded by Jean Paul Gaultier in 1976, acquired by Puig in 2011, followed by the fragrance business in 2016. Before 2016 the fragrance licence was held by Beauté Prestige International; the Moodie Davitt Report noted in 2017 that Puig had taken it over the previous year.
- Is there a cheaper alternative to Le Male?
- Scento covers that in a separate guide to Le Male alternatives, which compares options by notes and price. If you want the original itself, a 2 ml decant costs €7.90, a low-cost way to test the fragrance Puig calls one of the world's top three best-selling masculine fragrances before committing to a full bottle.
