Half of all decants are unisex

Most “best unisex perfume” lists are opinion pieces or roundups of marketplace listings. This one starts from purchases. In the Scento Fragrance Index, which covers October 2025 to September 2026 in Europe, unisex-labelled perfumes took 50% of paid decant units, masculine perfumes 30% and feminine perfumes 20%. The label is the one each perfume carries in Scento’s catalogue.

The figure covers Scento customers’ decants only, so it is not a share of the whole perfume market. It does show that people who sample niche and designer perfume before committing lean heavily towards scents that are not tied to one gender. We also matched the overall top 25 against the unisex ranking: unisex ranks 1 to 13 sit at overall places 4, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24 and 25, so 13 of the 25 most-bought perfumes across Europe carry a unisex label.

If you want one pick per style, start here:

  • Fresh and citrus: Pacific Chill by Louis Vuitton
  • Woody and skin-like: Santal 33 by Le Labo
  • Amber and sweet: Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait by Maison Francis Kurkdjian
  • Oud and dark: Ombre Nomade by Louis Vuitton
  • Amber and spice for less: Arabians Tonka by Montale, from €6.90 for 2 ml

The same index feeds our most popular perfumes for women and for men guides, which each carry a short unisex section. The full quarterly picture is in the Scento Fragrance Index.

How to choose a unisex perfume

“Unisex” is a marketing label, not a scent category. CK One has been around since 1994 and, according to Esquire, was “pretty much the only unisex fragrance out there (or at least the only one marketed as unisex)”3. Today the label is everywhere, and it tells you less than the notes do. These five checks work better.

  • Scent family first. Decide whether you like citrus, wood, amber or oud, then look at the label. The picks below are grouped that way.
  • Strength and occasion. Cologne-style freshness suits daytime and warm weather. An extrait or a dense amber is built for evenings and cold weather.
  • Season. Fresh and green scents are popular for daily use: 28% of European consumers favour them, according to Innova Market Insights1.
  • Budget per trial. A decant costs more per ml than a full bottle, but it is a far smaller outlay than a bottle you may not finish. The 15 picks run from €6.90 to €19.90 for 2 ml.
  • Try before you buy. In US prestige fragrance, mini and travel-size juices grew 12% in units and mini or discovery sets rose 41% in January to September 2025, according to Circana4.

If you plan to share one bottle with a partner, test it on both of you. A peer-reviewed study in the International Journal of Consumer Studies found that women are more favourable than men towards unisex offerings in general5. Scents that suit one wearer do not always suit the other, and the label does not settle it.

Fresh, citrus and aquatic unisex perfumes

Louis Vuitton fills much of this group, and our guide to the best Louis Vuitton perfumes goes deeper on the house. Here are the five that Scento customers order most.

Pacific Chill by Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton describes a “vibrant blackcurrant” enhanced by citrus, coriander seeds, basil, peppermint and orange6. It went on sale in 20237 and ranks #3 among Scento’s unisex perfumes. It suits hot days and anyone who wants fruit with a herbal edge.

Pacific Chill as a 2 ml decant (€14.90)

Blue Talisman by Ex Nihilo

Pear, bergamot, ginger and mandarin open, with orange blossom, Georgywood, Akigalawood and musks below. Ex Nihilo says the freshness of the pear is “balanced by an overdose of Ambrofix”8. It launched in 2023 for the house’s 10th anniversary9 and is #4 in the unisex ranking. It works for warm weather and the office.

Blue Talisman as a 2 ml decant (€13.90)

Symphony by Louis Vuitton

Fragrantica lists bergamot, grapefruit and ginger for this 2021 release and files it for women and men10. ScentAdvice quotes Louis Vuitton on the “sweet piquancy of fresh ginger zest” in a cocktail of grapefruit, bergamot and orange, and places it in the Les Extraits collection11. It is #6 unisex overall and #1 in Germany. Scento’s catalogue labels it unisex, but as with every pick, test it on skin before you commit to a bottle.

Symphony as a 2 ml decant (€19.90)

Erba Pura by Xerjoff

Lemon, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange sit over Mediterranean fruit, with amber, Madagascar vanilla beans and white musk beneath. Xerjoff’s data sheet lists the gender as unisex12. It is #7 in the unisex ranking and, at €9.90 for 2 ml, the lowest-priced pick in this group. It suits those who like citrus with a soft, sweet base.

Erba Pura as a 2 ml decant (€9.90)

Afternoon Swim by Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton calls it “notes of orange, bergamot and mandarin invigorated by a touch of ginger and grounded by ambergris”6. It sits at #12 among unisex perfumes and suits summer days and warm-weather wear.

Afternoon Swim as a 2 ml decant (€15.95)

Woody, musky and skin-scent unisex perfumes

Santal 33 by Le Labo

Sandalwood, a violet accord, cardamom, iris, ambrox, cedar and leather. Wikipedia, citing the press, describes “a 2011 sandalwood perfume” that took “two years and 400 prototypes”13. The New York Times described Le Labo as “completely unaware of the impact its new unisex perfume would have”14. It ranks #18 among Scento’s unisex perfumes and suits anyone who wants a dry, woody signature.

Santal 33 as a 2 ml decant (€13.90)

Bal d’Afrique by Byredo

Byredo lists buchu, African marigold, bergamot and blackcurrant, then cyclamen, jasmine petals and violet, over tonka bean absolue, cedarwood, musks and vetiver15. It is #21 in the unisex ranking. It suits those who like a floral that stays warm and woody rather than sweet.

Bal d’Afrique as a 2 ml decant (€12.90)

Another 13 by Le Labo

Le Labo says it was commissioned by An0ther Magazine in 2010 and is “composed of ambroxyde, a synthetic animal musk”, with jasmine and moss16. It is the clearest skin scent on this list and ranks #24 among unisex perfumes. Choose it for close, quiet wear.

Another 13 as a 2 ml decant (€13.90)

Amber, sweet and gourmand unisex perfumes

This is the biggest group. If you like vanilla, our guide to the best vanilla perfumes covers the sweeter end in more detail.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

The maker calls it a “long-lasting woody ambery floral extrait de parfum”, built on Grandiflorum jasmine, ethyl maltol, bitter almond and an ambergris accord17. It is #2 among unisex perfumes and in the unisex top 5 of four of the five countries below. The standard eau de parfum, Baccarat Rouge 540, is #11. Scento’s catalogue labels both unisex.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait as a 2 ml decant (€17.90)

Bianco Latte by Giardini di Toscana

The brand places it in the “Ambrata Gourmande” family, with caramel, honey, coumarin, vanilla and white musks18. Fragrantica’s database dates it to 201419. It is #5 in the unisex ranking and, at €7.50 for 2 ml, one of the lowest-cost ways into a gourmand.

Bianco Latte as a 2 ml decant (€7.50)

Angels’ Share by By Kilian

Kilian Paris lists cognac, then oak and cinnamon, over tonka bean and sandalwood20. It is #8 among unisex perfumes and takes first place in Romania. It suits cold evenings and anyone who likes a boozy sweetness.

Angels’ Share as a 2 ml decant (€16.90)

Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford

Tom Ford Beauty lists tobacco leaf, ginger, spice notes, tonka bean, cocoa and a fruit accord21. It is #9 in the unisex ranking. It is rich and warm, so keep it for autumn and winter.

Tobacco Vanille as a 2 ml decant (€14.90)

Arabians Tonka by Montale

Bergamot and saffron open, with rose and oud, then amber, oakmoss, tonka bean, leather, brown sugar and white musk. Montale calls it “powerful, sweet, unforgettable”22. It is #13 among unisex perfumes and second in Italy. At €6.90 for 2 ml it is the lowest-priced pick here.

Arabians Tonka as a 2 ml decant (€6.90)

Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian describes it as “ambery and woody”, with a cistus labdanum, lavandin and cinnamon leaf accord over an amber-vanilla accord with benzoin facets23. It is #14 in the unisex ranking and the fifth place in France. Our comparison of Baccarat Rouge 540 and Grand Soir sets the two ambers side by side.

Grand Soir as a 2 ml decant (€13.90)

Ombre Nomade by Louis Vuitton

Agarwood (oud), rose, raspberry, saffron, incense, amberwood, benzoin, birch and geranium. Mojeh describes it as the house’s “first ever oud unisex fragrance” from 2018, and the perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud told the magazine that “the majority of our Ombre Nomade clients are not from the Middle East”24. Fragrantica confirms the 2018 launch25. At Scento it is the #1 unisex perfume and #4 overall, behind Imagination, Aventus and Guidance. It is also in the unisex top 5 of all five countries below.

What Germany, Italy, France, Greece and Romania order

The Index shows a unisex top 5 only where all five places clear Scento’s order threshold. Five countries qualify, and their lists differ.

  • Germany: Symphony, Pacific Chill, Ombre Nomade, Afternoon Swim, Blue Talisman. Louis Vuitton takes the first four places.
  • Italy: Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait, Arabians Tonka, Bianco Latte, Ombre Nomade, Lamar by Kajal.
  • France: Ombre Nomade, Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait, Blue Talisman, Pacific Chill, Grand Soir.
  • Greece: Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait, Blue Talisman, Ombre Nomade, Pacific Chill, Bianco Latte.
  • Romania: Angels’ Share, Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait, Bianco Latte, Ombre Nomade, Erba Pura.

Counting the lists, Ombre Nomade is in the top 5 of all five countries and Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait in four, everywhere except Germany. Across the full unisex top 25, Louis Vuitton holds 5 places, Maison Francis Kurkdjian 3, and Le Labo, Byredo and Marc-Antoine Barrois 2 each.

Further down the ranking, other unisex perfumes in the catalogue include Gris Charnel by BDK Parfums (2 ml, €10.90), Blanche by Byredo (2 ml, €13.90) and Side Effect by Initio (2 ml, €9.95).

Unisex in the wider market

Innova Market Insights reports that 34% of European consumers prefer gender-neutral fragrances and that fragrance launches with gender-neutral claims have risen at a 57% CAGR over the past five years1. The same report says more than 3 in 5 Gen Z and Millennials in Europe consider perfumes an extension of their personality and self-expression1.

IndexBox estimates that approximately 30–35% of new fragrance launches in the EU in 2025 carried a unisex or gender-neutral label, up from under 15% in 20202. It also estimates unisex at approximately 15–18% of EU fine-fragrance volume in 20262. These are modelled estimates, not survey results.

Scento’s 50% is far higher than that 15–18%, but the two figures measure different things. IndexBox estimates a share of fine-fragrance volume across the EU. The Index measures paid decant units from people who choose to sample niche and designer perfume. It is a comparison of two bases, not a claim about the whole market.

For scale, Euromonitor puts Western Europe at “the biggest value share in the global fragrances market – 28% in 2023” (preliminary data), with the premium segment at about 83% of the Western Europe market26. In the US, prestige fragrance grew 5% in dollars in 2025 and mass fragrance grew 15%, according to Circana27.

How we compiled this

Scento is a European perfume decant retailer with 1,000+ fragrances in 2 ml, 5 ml and 8 ml vials, plus a 30 ml bottle decant on most perfumes, hand-poured from original full-size bottles with no dilution. Ranks come from the Scento Fragrance Index, October 2025 to September 2026, Europe. Every figure is a share or a rank computed from decants that customers paid for, and each paid decant unit counts once whatever its size. Feminine, masculine and unisex follow the label each perfume carries in Scento’s catalogue, so the labels are Scento’s, not a universal verdict. The 13-of-25 figure and the count of places per house are our own derivations from the published rankings.

The 15 picks are drawn from the unisex top 25 in the Index, chosen to cover four scent styles, with notes taken from the makers’ own pages where available. Prices are one-time retail prices checked on 14 October 2026. All external sources were read on 14 October 2026.

Your questions, answered

What makes a perfume unisex?
Unisex is a marketing label rather than a scent category. At Scento it means the label a perfume carries in the catalogue. Esquire notes that CK One, launched in 1994, was pretty much the only unisex fragrance out there, or at least the only one marketed as unisex. Judge a perfume by its notes and family, then use the label as a guide.
What is the most popular unisex perfume?
At Scento it is Ombre Nomade by Louis Vuitton. In the Scento Fragrance Index, covering October 2025 to September 2026 in Europe, it ranks first among unisex perfumes by paid decant units and fourth overall. It is also in the unisex top 5 of Germany, Italy, France, Greece and Romania.
Are unisex perfumes popular in Europe?
Yes. Innova Market Insights reports that 34% of European consumers prefer gender-neutral fragrances. In the Scento Fragrance Index, 50% of paid decant units were unisex-labelled perfumes. IndexBox estimates that approximately 30–35% of new EU fragrance launches in 2025 carried a unisex or gender-neutral label, up from under 15% in 2020.
Is Baccarat Rouge 540 unisex?
Scento's catalogue labels Baccarat Rouge 540 unisex, and the Extrait de parfum too. In the Scento Fragrance Index the Extrait is the second most-bought unisex perfume and the eau de parfum is eleventh. Maison Francis Kurkdjian describes the Extrait as a long-lasting woody ambery floral extrait de parfum.
Is Louis Vuitton Symphony unisex?
Fragrantica lists Symphony for women and men, and Scento's catalogue labels it unisex. It is the sixth most-bought unisex perfume in Europe and first in Germany, according to the Scento Fragrance Index. Its notes are bergamot, grapefruit and ginger, but as with any label, test it on your own skin before buying a bottle.
What is a good fresh unisex perfume for summer?
Five fresh options are Pacific Chill, Afternoon Swim and Symphony by Louis Vuitton, Blue Talisman by Ex Nihilo and Erba Pura by Xerjoff. Their makers list notes such as blackcurrant, orange, bergamot, grapefruit, ginger and pear. Pacific Chill is the most-bought of the five at Scento, ranking third among unisex perfumes.
What is the lowest-cost way to try unisex niche perfumes?
A 2 ml decant. Among the 15 picks, Scento's 2 ml retail prices run from €6.90 for Arabians Tonka by Montale and €7.50 for Bianco Latte by Giardini di Toscana up to €19.90 for Symphony. Circana reports that mini and discovery sets in US prestige fragrance rose 41% in January to September 2025.
Can couples share one perfume?
Often, but test it on both wearers first. A peer-reviewed study in the International Journal of Consumer Studies by Bhanja and Mehta found that women are more favourable than men towards unisex offerings in general, so reactions differ. Sample a 2 ml decant on each person before committing to a full bottle.
