Buying Perfume on Vinted: How to Check Authenticity

9 min read

Key takeaways

Vinted gives buyers 2 calendar days from its delivery notice to report an issue, and its rules ban opened or used perfume.

  • Vinted asks cosmetics sellers for packaging photos, the seal, the barcode, batch number and receipt, so ask for the same.
  • A matching batch code is only weak evidence of a genuine perfume, while a mismatch is strong evidence of a problem, according to Scento's batch code checker.
  • Vinted says it replies to counterfeit claims within 48 hours and refunds without a return when there is strong evidence.

Check a Vinted perfume before you pay and again inside two calendar days of delivery, because that is Vinted’s refund window.1 Opened or used perfume is not allowed on the platform, so insist on sealed stock.2 No single check proves a bottle is genuine, so combine photos, codes, packaging and price.

In short

  • Vinted only allows new, sealed cosmetics, so a listing for an opened bottle already breaks its rules.2
  • Ask the seller for the photos Vinted itself asks cosmetics sellers to upload: all sides of the packaging, the seal, the barcode, the batch or lot number and the receipt.3
  • A batch code that matches on box and bottle is only weak evidence of a genuine perfume. A missing or mismatched code is strong evidence something is wrong.4
  • Counterfeit claims need strong evidence, and Vinted says it replies within 48 hours.5

What Vinted’s rules say about perfume

Only “Buy now” purchases are covered

You can request a refund if your order “was never shipped or is lost”, “arrived damaged” or “is significantly not as described”. Cover applies only to purchases through “Buy now”: “If you make a payment outside Vinted’s system … you won’t be covered”.1

The window is short. “The refund request period starts when we notify you that the order should have been delivered or seems lost”, and “you’ll have 2 calendar days to report an issue and request a refund”. If you miss it, “your payment will be sent to the seller and we’ll be unable to support you with a refund.”1 The Spanish page says the same: “Tendrás 2 días naturales para notificar un problema y solicitar un reembolso.”7

Vinted also lists what is not covered. “If an item matches its description but doesn’t fit or doesn’t suit you, it is not eligible”, “only items that are significantly not as described are eligible for a refund”, and “items that have been used extensively or damaged after a successful delivery are not eligible”.1

What the fee and Item Verification do not cover

Vinted adds a mandatory “Vinted fee” at checkout: a percentage of the price plus a small fixed amount. It covers applying the refund policy if the item is lost, damaged or significantly not as described, when bought from a non-professional seller.8

Item Verification is a separate, optional paid check for designer items above a price threshold. Its eligible categories are “clothing, bags, accessories, jewelry, shoes”. Perfume is not among them, so a perfume order is not checked for you by default. For professional sellers, buyers get “14 days” to report, against 2 days for standard sellers.9

Perfume is also tightly limited by the listing rules. Vinted removes listings where “the item is a cosmetic product, perfume, cosmetic accessory, or beauty tool that has been opened or used”. It also removes listings where “the item is counterfeit” or “the item is uploaded for commercial resale purposes”.2 Its catalogue rules allow “new cosmetics, beauty and care products” and prohibit “counterfeit items”.10

Before you buy: the listing checklist

Ask for the photos Vinted asks sellers for

Vinted states that “only brand-new cosmetics can be sold on Vinted”. It asks sellers to “upload at least 3 pictures”, covering the entire packaging from all sides, the batch number, close-ups, the purchase receipt, the seal and the barcode number (UPC/EAN).3 Treat that list as your own checklist and ask for each item in the chat. It is also sensible to ask for the code printed or etched on the base of the bottle, which is reasoning on our part rather than a Vinted requirement.

Match the code on the box to the code on the bottle

Our batch code checker reads the production date of perfumes from 13 supported brands, and it is clear about its limits: a batch code alone cannot prove that a bottle is genuine. “A missing, unreadable, or mismatched code — different on the box than on the bottle — is strong evidence something is wrong. A valid, matching code is only weak evidence it is right.” The page adds that “online decoders can be wrong”.4

Use the code as a filter, not a verdict. If the two codes differ, walk away. If they match, carry on with the other checks. For the full method, see our guide to batch code tools for perfume verification and our walkthrough of spotting fake perfumes using batch codes.

Read the packaging and the bottle

Ask for clear photos of the cellophane seams, the box print, the glass and the sprayer. Our posts on the signs of fake perfume packaging and the signs of fake perfume bottles show what to look for in each photo.

Price and seller

The batch code checker page says a price far below retail is the most common tell.4 Look at how long the seller has been active and whether their other listings make sense. A seller with many identical sealed bottles also cuts against Vinted’s own rule that listings must not be uploaded for commercial resale.2

When the parcel arrives: inspect inside two days

The clock runs from Vinted’s delivery notice, so inspect the parcel the day it arrives.1

Film the unboxing and compare the codes

Record yourself opening the parcel in one continuous take, with the seal and the cellophane visible. Then compare the code on the box with the code on the bottle and with the photos the seller sent.

Be careful with smell and longevity

Judge scent and wear only against a reference bottle you know well. A perfume’s dry-down takes hours to show, while the reporting window is short, which is our reasoning rather than a Vinted statement. Because Vinted excludes items “used extensively” after delivery,1 keep testing to a minimum until you have decided whether to report. Our real versus fake longevity test explains what to compare.

How to open a dispute or counterfeit claim

Item not as described

Press “I have an issue” within the 2 days. Add photos of “damaged parts”, “damaged packaging” and “parts of the item that do not match the listing description”. The order is then “suspended” while Vinted looks at it.11

Item that seems counterfeit

Press “Provide proof” and send photos of “the whole item”, “the suspicious parts”, any label and “the item’s serial number”. Photos must be “high-quality … with all text in them readable”. Vinted says: “We’ll get back to you in 48 hours.”5

The outcome depends on the evidence. “If we see no strong evidence that the item is counterfeit, we will consider it to be authentic and complete the order.” If there is strong evidence, “we’ll cancel the order and issue you a refund. You won’t have to return this item.”5 That is why the unboxing film, the matching codes and the seller’s own photos matter. For items that go through Item Verification and fail, Vinted says it has “a zero-tolerance policy regarding non-genuine items”.12

If a return is requested

Items must be sent within 5 business days of the seller requesting a return. Buyers pay return shipping, and once the parcel arrives the seller has 2 days to check it.1,11

Buying from a private seller in Spain

A Spanish law firm notes that for sales between private individuals there is “no hay derecho de desistimiento de catorce días ni garantía legal de conformidad”, meaning no 14-day right of withdrawal and no legal guarantee of conformity. Vinted’s two-day window runs “desde que consta la entrega”, from the recorded delivery. The firm’s advice is to “conserve el chat completo dentro de la aplicación, sin borrar nada”: keep the whole chat inside the app and delete nothing.13

Why it matters

The EUIPO estimates lost cosmetics sales due to counterfeiting at EUR 3 billion a year, corresponding to 4.8% of total sales, on an annual average for 2018–2021. The cosmetics sector in that study includes the manufacture of perfumes and toilet preparations.6 The same report notes that harmful products account for 15% of counterfeit articles seized at the EU’s external borders, citing a 2022 EUIPO threat assessment.6

The health risk is real. In December 2022 the City of London Police intellectual property crime unit said laboratory tests of samples it had previously seized showed that counterfeit perfume “can contain poisonous chemicals, including cyanide and even human urine”, and said fakes of this kind can cause allergic reactions such as skin irritation, swelling, rashes and burns.14

A safer way to try a much-faked perfume

If you want to know whether you like a heavily copied perfume, you do not need a full bottle from a stranger. Between October 2025 and September 2026, 2 ml vials made up 76% of paid decant units at Scento (Scento Fragrance Index, Europe), which suggests that most people try a perfume as a 2 ml sample first. Our decants are hand-poured from original full-size bottles, with no dilution. Decants cost more per ml than a full bottle, so the gain is in the cost of trying: you pay for a small vial, not a bottle you may not wear (see our guide to decants).

Among Scento orders in the same period, Creed’s Aventus was the second most-bought perfume across Europe, and second in each of Germany, Italy, France and Greece. Parfums de Marly’s Layton was ninth across Europe, ninth in Germany and seventh in France. Ranks are by paid decant units.

How we compiled this

We read every Vinted help page cited here on 30 October 2026, and quote them directly because Vinted can change its wording. EU figures come from the EUIPO’s January 2024 study and the police statement is dated December 2022. Ranks and shares come from the Scento Fragrance Index for Europe, October 2025 to September 2026, ranked by paid decant units. Prices are one-time retail prices as read on 30 October 2026. Points we could not source, such as asking for the code on the bottle base, and dry-down timing, are marked as our reasoning.

Your questions, answered

How long do I have to report a fake perfume on Vinted?
Vinted gives you 2 calendar days to report an issue and request a refund. The period starts when Vinted notifies you that the order should have been delivered or seems lost. If you miss it, Vinted says your payment will be sent to the seller and it will be unable to support you with a refund. For professional sellers, Vinted gives buyers 14 days to report.
Can you sell opened perfume on Vinted?
No. Vinted removes listings where the item is a cosmetic product or perfume that has been opened or used. Its help pages say only brand-new cosmetics can be sold, and its catalogue rules allow new cosmetics, beauty and care products. A listing for an opened bottle breaks those rules before you even look at authenticity.
Does Vinted authenticate perfume?
Not through its Item Verification service. Vinted lists the eligible categories as clothing, bags, accessories, jewelry and shoes, with a brand on its list and a minimum price. Perfume is not among those categories, so it appears not to be covered. Treat any perfume purchase as one you must check yourself.
Do I have to send a fake back to get a refund?
Not if the item is confirmed counterfeit. Vinted says items that are confirmed counterfeit do not need to be returned to receive a refund. For a counterfeit claim, it says that if there is strong evidence the item is counterfeit, it will cancel the order and refund you, and you will not have to return the item.
What photos should I ask a Vinted seller for?
Ask for the photos Vinted itself asks cosmetics sellers to upload: the entire packaging from all sides, the batch or lot number, close-ups, the purchase receipt, the seal and the barcode number. It is also sensible to ask for the code on the base of the bottle, so you can compare it with the one on the box.
Does a matching batch code prove a perfume is genuine?
No. Scento's batch code checker says a batch code alone cannot prove that a bottle is genuine. A missing, unreadable or mismatched code is strong evidence something is wrong, while a valid, matching code is only weak evidence it is right. It also warns that online decoders can be wrong.
Is fake perfume dangerous?
It can be. The City of London Police intellectual property crime unit said in December 2022 that laboratory tests of seized samples showed counterfeit perfume can contain poisonous chemicals, including cyanide and even human urine. It said fakes of this kind can cause allergic reactions such as skin irritation, swelling, rashes and burns.
Is a price far below retail a red flag?
Yes. Scento's batch code checker page says a price far below retail is the most common tell of a fake. A low price does not prove a perfume is counterfeit, but combined with missing photos, a mismatched code or a seller who avoids questions, it is a strong reason to walk away.
