Kilian Midnight Espresso is a sweet amber gourmand built on the Espresso Martini: coffee and rum open, chocolate and hazelnut form the heart, and Bourbon vanilla and Siam benzoin close.1 One published wearing test found it lasts about six hours and reads as chocolate more than coffee.2
In short
- The notes run from coffee and rum, through chocolate and hazelnut, to Bourbon vanilla and Siam benzoin. The perfumer is Mathieu Nardin.1
- One tester got about six hours of wear, the longest of the three Cocktails fragrances, and described it as chocolate above all rather than coffee.2
- It suits cold-weather evenings and anyone who likes dense, sweet gourmands. The same tester called it perfect for autumn and winter.2
- Pass if you want a dry, realistic espresso or deep, multilayered complexity. The tester found The Cocktails simpler than Kilian’s Liquors.2
Key figures, 2026
What Kilian set out to make
Kilian describes Midnight Espresso as a warm and sweet Eau de Parfum inspired by the energy of an Espresso Martini, and as a rich and addictive amber gourmand, like an after-dinner drink.1 The house’s own line for it is “The most delicious after-dinner coffee. Keep the music on.”, attributed on the page to Kilian Hennessy.1 Vogue reports that the perfume brings you into the energy of a New York nightclub.8 Kilian’s bar recipe card lists it as “Gourmand & Spicy” and serves it in a martini glass.9
The bottle follows the theme. Kilian describes a tall silhouette rising from a faceted, crystal-cut inspired base with gold-toned details, and a jewel-like cap that echoes the final garnish of a perfectly crafted cocktail. It is made in France.1
Midnight Espresso belongs to The Cocktails, a collection of three fragrances. Sparkling Royal is by Calice Becker, while Piña Paraíso and Midnight Espresso are by Mathieu Nardin.5 ,6 Olfastory dates the launch to August 2026, and Say Who reports that the trilogy launched on 1 September.3 ,5 In practice that makes it a late-summer 2026 release.
The collection builds on an older idea. Hennessy says Kilian introduced its bar in 2021. The Liquors collection launched with Angels’ Share and Roses on Ice, followed by Apple Brandy, and he says the next cocktails are already created for the next few years.7 Kilian itself launched in 2007 with ten scents, and Angels’ Share was not one of them.8 Hennessy frames the logic as choice: the idea is to give you the possibility of picking a different fragrance depending on your mood, the occasion or the side of yourself you want to reveal that day.8
The notes, and how it wears
None of the sources we read gives a clock-time timeline, so this section follows the order of the notes rather than the hours. That order is consistent across the maker and the trade press.
Opening: coffee and rum
Kilian says coffee and rum open with intense depth.1 IC&CO describes the pairing as intense Arabica coffee with rum essence, and calls the fragrance richer and more nocturnal.6 The boozy side is not subtle: the Fragrantica tester called it the “drunkest” of the three.2
Heart: chocolate and hazelnut
The coffee and rum melt into a warm accord of chocolate and hazelnut.1 IC&CO’s wording is a dark chocolate accord and roasted hazelnut.6 This is where the tester’s reading comes in. She says it smells not like a cocktail but like a slice of chocolate-coffee cake, and that the perfume itself is chocolate above all: “Not even coffee so much as chocolate.”2
Base: Bourbon vanilla and Siam benzoin
Bourbon vanilla and Siam benzoin linger on the skin, leaving what Kilian calls a smooth, velvety trail.1 IC&CO says Madagascar bourbon vanilla and Siam benzoin soften the edges.6 The tester describes the overall impression as warm and cosy, dense and viscous, and definitely sweet, but with a sweetness that feels entirely natural.2
What the ingredient list shows
The declared ingredients include coumarin, vanillin, rose ketones and tetramethyl acetyloctahydronaphthalenes, plus three colourants: CI 42090, CI 14700 and CI 19140.1 Olfastory reads the colourants as tinting the juice a copper brown.3 It is an Eau de Parfum.1
Performance: longevity and projection
On Elena Prokofeva’s skin at Fragrantica, The Cocktails lasted about six hours, and Midnight Espresso was the longest-lasting of the three. The same tester gets around ten hours from The Liquors.2 That is one person on one skin, so treat six hours as a reference point rather than a promise.
Retail copy quoted by Now Smell This is more modest, saying the perfume lingers 5+ hours.10 The two readings sit close together: around five to six hours of clear presence is a fair expectation from the sources we have.
No source gives a measured projection figure, so we give none. The tester’s “dense and viscous” description points to a rich, close-feeling sweetness rather than a light veil, but that is her impression and not a measurement.2
Who it suits, and who should pass
Midnight Espresso suits people who already love chocolate, hazelnut and vanilla in a fragrance. The retail copy pitches it as perfect for date nights, evenings out and after-hours moments, and the tester calls it perfect for autumn and winter.10 ,2
It is marketed as unisex. The tester found The Cocktails considerably sweeter than she expected, but notes that this kind of sweetness is now worn just as easily by men as by women.2
It is a weaker fit if you expect a dry, realistic espresso, since the tester finds the chocolate louder than the coffee.2 It is also not the choice for deep, multilayered complexity. In her words, The Cocktails are simpler than The Liquors and not as deep or multilayered.2

Midnight Espresso next to Kilian’s other coffee and liquor scents
If coffee is what draws you, Kilian has two older bottles in The Cellars that handle it very differently. Angels’ Share, from The Liquors, is the collection Midnight Espresso’s bar idea builds on.
Black Phantom by Kilian
The darker, stranger coffee. Kilian lists rum and caramel at the top, coffee in the heart, and a “cyanide” accord and sugar cane in the base, finishing on creamy sandalwood. The perfumer is Sidonie Lancesseur.11 Choose it over Midnight Espresso if you want rum-soaked coffee rather than chocolate cake. Black Phantom on Scento
Intoxicated by Kilian
Kilian calls it a cup of smooth dark Turkish coffee, with cardamom on top, mocha coffee and cinnamon in the heart, and vanilla and vetiver underneath. The perfumer is Calice Becker.12 It is the spiced route into coffee, where Midnight Espresso is the chocolate and hazelnut one. Intoxicated on Scento
Angels’ Share by Kilian
The cognac. Kilian lists cognac on top, oak and cinnamon in the heart, and tonka bean and sandalwood in the base, with a praline and vanilla finish. The perfumer is Benoist Lapouza.13 Reach for it if the rum and the sweetness are what you like about Midnight Espresso but you want the spirit to lead. Angels’ Share on Scento
In the Scento Fragrance Index, covering October 2025 to September 2026, Kilian is the #9 house by share of Scento decants, at 3%. Angels’ Share ranks #17 among the most-bought perfumes across Europe, #8 among unisex perfumes and #5 in Romania. It was also a climber, moving from #25 in the second quarter of 2026 to #18 in the third (up 7 places), among perfumes in the top 50 of both quarters. Midnight Espresso is in no ranking: it launched at the very end of that window and is too new to rank.
The rest of The Cocktails
Piña Paraíso is a warm floral tropical: Kilian lists pineapple and rum, then coconut and frangipani, then Bourbon vanilla and tonka bean. It is also by Mathieu Nardin.14 Sparkling Royal is fresh, fruity and floral, with mint and lemon, then rose and blackcurrant, then tonka bean and soft musk. It is by Calice Becker.15
Within the trio, the Fragrantica tester singled out Midnight Espresso as the longest-lasting.2 Across the whole collection she found the fragrances simpler than The Liquors.2

How to wear it
The retail copy pitches it for evenings and after-hours, and the tester for autumn and winter, so cold-weather evenings are where it fits.10 ,2 Because it is dense and sweet, it makes sense to let it work on skin before deciding. The tester’s advice is to try it on skin, not on a blotter, and to live with it for at least a few hours.2

How we compiled this
This review draws on Kilian’s own product pages, published wearing reviews and trade coverage, all read on 30 October 2026, plus Scento’s catalogue, checked the same day, and the Scento Fragrance Index for October 2025 to September 2026. We chose the comparison bottles by what a reader of a coffee-and-rum perfume is likely to look at next: Kilian’s other coffee scents, its cognac and liquor line, and the rest of The Cocktails. Wear time comes from a single published test and a retail claim, which is why we describe it as a range and not a guarantee.

Your questions, answered
- What does Kilian Midnight Espresso smell like?
- Kilian says coffee and rum open with intense depth, melting into a warm accord of chocolate and hazelnut, before Bourbon vanilla and Siam benzoin linger on the skin. Fragrantica's tester found it reads as chocolate above all, closer to a slice of chocolate-coffee cake than to a cocktail, and sweet but with a natural-feeling sweetness.
- How long does Midnight Espresso last?
- On Fragrantica's tester, The Cocktails last about six hours, and Midnight Espresso is the longest-lasting of the three, against around ten hours for Kilian's Liquors on the same skin. Retail copy quoted by Now Smell This says it lingers 5+ hours. One is a single tester's skin and the other a retail claim, so treat them as a rough range.
- When did Midnight Espresso come out?
- It launched in late summer 2026. Olfastory says it launched in August 2026, and Say Who reports that the three-fragrance Cocktails collection launched on 1 September. Basenotes also lists it as a 2026 release in Kilian's range, so August to early September is the window.
- Who made Midnight Espresso?
- Kilian's product page names Mathieu Nardin as the perfumer. It is one of three fragrances in Kilian's The Cocktails collection, alongside Piña Paraíso, also by Nardin, and Sparkling Royal, which IC&CO and Say Who credit to Calice Becker, so the trio has two perfumers.
- Is Midnight Espresso unisex?
- It is marketed as unisex. Fragrantica's tester found The Cocktails considerably sweeter than she expected, but wrote that this kind of sweetness in perfumery is now worn just as easily by men as by women. Whether it suits you depends more on how much you like dense gourmand sweetness than on gender.
- Is Midnight Espresso a winter perfume?
- Fragrantica's tester calls it perfect for autumn and winter. Kilian pitches it as an after-dinner drink, and the retail copy quoted by Now Smell This recommends it for date nights, evenings out and after-hours moments, so evenings and cold weather are where the sources place it.
- How is Midnight Espresso different from Black Phantom and Intoxicated?
- Kilian lists Black Phantom with rum, caramel, coffee, a cyanide accord, sugar cane and sandalwood, and Intoxicated with cardamom, mocha coffee, cinnamon, vanilla and vetiver. Midnight Espresso is the chocolate and hazelnut one. Fragrantica's tester also finds The Cocktails simpler and less multilayered than The Liquors.
- What cocktail is Midnight Espresso based on?
- It is inspired by the Espresso Martini, according to Kilian. Kilian's own bar recipe card describes it as Gourmand and Spicy and serves it in a martini glass. Vogue reports that Kilian describes the perfume as bringing you into the energy of a New York nightclub.
