Perfume layering calculator: see which fragrances work together
Pick two to four perfumes and get a compatibility score out of 100, with the reason behind it, the note that pulls it down and the order to spray them. Free, and it works with any Scento perfume.
How the score works
The calculator reads the notes listed on each Scento perfume's page and sorts every note into one of twelve scent families, such as citrus, floral, woody or amber. Only perfumes you can buy today as a decant are included.
The score out of 100 has four parts. Family harmony counts for 45 points: some families are classic partners (citrus with woody, floral with musk) and some pull apart (aquatic with gourmand). Shared notes add up to 20 points, because a note both perfumes carry works as a bridge. Top and base balance adds up to 20 points, because a lighter, top-led perfume over a deeper, base-led one usually layers best. The last 15 points are lost when opposing families make up a large share of the layer.
Notes are weighted by where they sit: base notes count most because they stay longest, heart notes next, and top notes least because they fade first.
For three or more perfumes, every pair is scored. The group score leans on the average pair, is pulled down by the weakest pair and drops a little for each perfume beyond three. The note that costs the most points is named.
These are our own simple rules, built on common pairings. They are not a lab measurement or a perfumer's verdict. Skin, climate and taste change how a layer smells, so treat the score as a starting point and test on your skin.
Frequently asked questions
How does the perfume layering calculator work?
Pick two to four perfumes. The calculator compares the scent families of their notes, the notes they share, how light or deep each perfume is and any clashing notes. Then it gives one score out of 100 and explains it.
What if my perfume is not on Scento?
Choose the scent family that fits it best, such as floral or oriental (amber), instead of a name. The score is then based on that family alone, so it is less precise than a match between two listed perfumes.
Can I layer more than two perfumes?
Yes, up to four. You get a score for every pairing, a group score, the best and the weakest pair and the note that pulls the score down the most.
Which perfume do I spray first?
Spray the heavier, base-led perfume first and the lighter one on top. The result page puts them in order for you. Start with one spray of each.
Can I try a layer before buying bottles?
Yes. Every perfume in the calculator is sold as a small decant, so you can test a pair on your skin first.
