Louis Vuitton Symphony is a 2021 grapefruit, ginger and bergamot extrait, concentrated at 30 percent, by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud.1,2 It smells of bright, juicy citrus with a ginger edge over clean musks.3 Wearers split: some find it radiant and long-lasting, others linear. Read on for notes, wear time and who should skip it.
In short:
- Notes: Louis Vuitton lists a grapefruit accord, ginger and bergamot, and its own description adds orange. The collection has no top, heart or base notes.1,4
- Wear time: reports run from “mediocre at best” on one Parfumo reviewer’s skin to “easily 24hours” on a Fragrantica member’s.5,3
- Gender: it is listed for women and men, and wearers disagree on whether it leans feminine or masculine.3
- Who it suits: anyone after a clean, versatile citrus that lasts, worn in warm weather. Skip it if you want a scent that changes a lot, or if clean citrus reads as detergent to you.3,5
- On Scento, ranked by units bought from October 2025 to September 2026, it is #6 among unisex-labelled perfumes in Europe and #4 overall in Germany.6

The notes, and why there is no pyramid
Louis Vuitton names three key notes: a grapefruit accord, ginger and bergamot.1 Its description of the scent adds orange: “the sweet piquancy of fresh ginger zest in a cocktail of grapefruit, bergamot and orange”.1 Parfumo lists grapefruit, bergamot, orange and ginger.7 Fragrantica files Symphony as a citrus fragrance, with fresh spicy, aromatic, floral and woody following as its main accords.3
Do not look for a top, heart and base. The perfumer says of the collection: “I wanted to deconstruct the very architecture of perfume. That’s how Les Extraits Collection was born: five perfumes with no top, heart or base notes, in order to reveal the quintessence of each olfactory family.”4 Each scent is “structured like olfactory columns”, and for Symphony he describes “the mingling of Earth and sky, the sublime harmony of the elements”.4
The collection is concentrated at 30 percent.2 If extrait is a new word, our guide to perfume concentrations from eau de toilette to extrait explains where it sits. For the opening note, our bergamot guide covers what Italian citrus does in a fragrance.
The ingredient list published by Louis Vuitton includes Peru balsam extract and vanillin.1 That fits a Fragrantica critic who noticed “smooth, oily substructures of balsam and resin not listed in the formula”.9
How it wears, from first spray to drydown
The opening
The critic Eddie Bulliqi found “a captivating, surprising fizzy quality to it thanks to the star ginger note”, evoking “the salinity, bitterness, and brine-like ferment of pickled ginger but discarding its heat, resulting in a fresh, aquatic spice effect”.9 He adds that the grapefruit and bergamot “annunciate with clarity and fidelity at the scent’s beginning” but “quickly wane in strength”.9
Wearers lean on the grapefruit. A Fragrantica member (September 2026) describes “super bright, sparkly, fresh and addictive citruses”.3 Another (September 2026) says it “opens with a clean sheets feel, then quickly turns into a fresh, fruit-forward smoothie”.3 A Parfumo reviewer (June 2025) calls the start “sweet natural realistic citrus” and adds “It is very airy!”5
The heart and the drydown
Igor Masyukov writes on Fragrantica that “in the heart, a fresh, watery, slightly metallic accord emerges”.10 In the base he finds a mineral touch that he associates with iris materials, plus a soft ambroxan-musky accent.10 A Fragrantica member (September 2026) puts it more simply: “The drydown is musks.”3 A Parfumo reviewer (August 2025) finds candied citrus fruits with warm woods in the base, and says the candied base starts to annoy them after a while.11
Few people report much change. Masyukov says “Symphony doesn’t evolve dramatically over time”.10 A Fragrantica member (October 2026) calls it “very linear/simple” and a Parfumo reviewer (August 2026) says “The fragrance is largely linear.”3,12
The ginger debate
Wearers disagree on whether the ginger is the star. For Bulliqi it is.9 A Parfumo reviewer (June 2025) writes “I cannot detect ginger (as LV suggest)”, and another (August 2026) writes “I did not notice much ginger at all, rather the bergamot”.5,12 A Fragrantica member (September 2026) says “the ginger isn’t front and center”.3 Masyukov goes further: “to me, this is neither grapefruit nor bergamot nor ginger”, and Symphony “smells first and foremost of pomelo”, the moment when you start peeling one.10
Bitterness splits opinion too. One Fragrantica member (September 2026) says “a bitter note hits me and stays that way for a longgggg time”, while another says “The grapefruit isn’t bitter”.3
Longevity and sillage
Reports on wear time vary more than almost anything else about Symphony. Parfumo’s summary of the scent is that “the longevity is above-average”.7 Individual wearers range much wider.
| Source | What they report |
|---|---|
| Parfumo reviewer, October 2021 | 16 hours, though no longer projecting by then 5 |
| Fragrantica member, September 2026 | “easily 24hours” on skin, days on clothes 3 |
| Parfumo reviewer, August 2025 | A hint “the day after next”, after hand washing 11 |
| Fragrantica member, August 2026 | On a pillow “a week later” 3 |
| Fragrantica member, September 2026 | Nose-blind after four hours; a friend found it “room filling” three hours in 3 |
| Parfumo reviewer, June 2026 | “mediocre at best”, “practically a skin scent” by the drydown 5 |
| Parfumo summary | “above-average” 7 |
Clothes hold the scent longest. One Fragrantica member (July 2026) says it lingered on a blanket for nearly a week, another (September 2026) that it lasted days on clothes.3 Masyukov, who wore it for six months, says it “projects far and lasts a long time, even in high Middle Eastern temperatures”.10 He also notes that the base is quieter than the citrus opening and the watery-metallic heart, which keep projecting from skin and clothing for many hours.10
The same reviewer who found it strong at first reports it was “practically a skin scent” by the drydown.5 Skin varies, and so does how much you spray.
Seasons, occasions and layering
Most wearers place Symphony in warm weather. A Fragrantica member (October 2026) calls it “a unisex daytime fragrance for warmer weather, ideally worn with linen”, another (July 2026) says “Perfect for hot summer”, and a third (October 2026) says “This fragrance just screams summer!”3 Masyukov recommends it to anyone after “a long-lasting citrus capable of withstanding even the most aggressive heat”.10
It also travels across settings. One member (October 2026) calls it “extremely versatile, you could wear this to the gym or to your wedding and nobody would bat an eye”.3 A Parfumo reviewer (August 2025) calls it “a crowdpleaser in the best sense”.11 A Fragrantica member (August 2026) writes “I love it, especially for layering”, and says the store representative always layers it.3 Because it is an extrait, another member (July 2026) says “you only need a small amount”.3
The bottle is part of the appeal. Frank Gehry designed his first perfume bottle for it, starting from Marc Newson’s original bottle and “stretching the lines into curves”, with a hand-polished metal cap.1 The 100 ml spray is refillable in stores with a perfume fountain, and engraving of initials or numbers is complimentary.1 The Parfumo reviewer of August 2025 found it “very impractical if you want to take it on a trip”.11
Who it suits, and who should skip it
Masyukov’s summary is blunt: “Symphony is either adored or hated.”10 Fans call it radiant, juicy and airy. Critics call it linear, simple, “high-end laundry detergent” (Parfumo, June 2026) or “too shower-gel-like” (Parfumo, August 2026).5,12
It suits
- Anyone who wants a clean, versatile citrus that lasts. One Fragrantica member (August 2026) says it is for “someone who wants a perfectly executed, elegant, ultra versatile fragrance”.3
- Warm-weather daytime wearers, including in heat.3,10
- Those who like a crowd-pleaser rather than an attention seeker.3
Skip it if
- You want a perfume that changes a lot. The same member says it is “not geared towards frag enthusiasts who want to be entertained by their frag”.3
- Clean citrus reads as detergent or shower gel to you.5,12
- You want a strong, recognisable ginger.12
Men or women
Fragrantica and Parfumo both list it for women and men.3,7 Wearers split. One Fragrantica member (October 2026) says it “definitely leans feminine, probably around 60–70% to my nose”; another (August 2026) finds it “definitely masculine leaning” but says “I do think a woman can wear it”.3 A Parfumo reviewer (June 2025) calls it “definitely feminine leaning”, while another (October 2021) sees it “slightly more on the masculine side”.5 A third Fragrantica member (August 2026) says “Unmistakably unisex”, and Masyukov calls it “a fragrance beyond gender”.3,10
Where it sits in the Louis Vuitton line
Les Extraits launched with five perfumes in 2021: Cosmic Cloud, Dancing Blossom, Rhapsody, Stellar Times and Symphony, each from a different olfactive family.2 Its sister Stellar Times is described as “a deep, woody fragrance with a touch of orange blossom and amber”; our Stellar Times review goes deeper.2 Myriad was added as the sixth perfume in 2023, and Fragrantica lists Fantasmagory (2025) as part of the collection, with ginger, anise, almond, floral notes, vanilla and leather.13,14
Louis Vuitton also makes other citrus and ginger perfumes. Here is each by its own notes:
- L’Immensité (2018): grapefruit, bergamot, ginger, rosemary, sage, geranium, water notes, amber, Ambroxan and labdanum.15
- Afternoon Swim (2019): Sicilian orange, bergamot, mandarin, ambergris and ginger.16
- Imagination (2021): citron, Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian orange, Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger, Ceylon cinnamon, Chinese black tea, Ambroxan, guaiac wood and olibanum.17 Our Imagination review covers it.
- Pacific Chill (2023): orange, citron, lemon, mint, black currant, coriander, apricot, basil, May rose, carrot seeds, fig, ambrette and dates.18
- Météore (2020): Calabrian bergamot, mandarin, Sicilian orange, Tunisian neroli, pepper, pink pepper, Indonesian nutmeg, Guatemalan cardamom and Java vetiver oil.19
For something different from the same house, Ombre Nomade is a precious oud, sourced exclusively by and for Louis Vuitton, blended with benzoin, raspberry and incense, and Attrape-Rêves pairs an elegant bouquet of peonies with cocoa notes.20
Louis Vuitton is the most-bought house on Scento, with a 9.5% share of units bought from October 2025 to September 2026.6 For the full range, see our guide to the best Louis Vuitton perfumes, and for another view of Symphony, our other Symphony guide.

How we compiled this
We read Louis Vuitton’s own Symphony page, launch coverage from 2021, two Fragrantica editorials, and member reviews on Fragrantica and Parfumo, all on 2 November 2026. Wearer comments are individual reports, attributed by site and month, not measurements. Where sources disagree on notes or launch details, we say so. Our own figures come from Scento’s order data for October 2025 to September 2026 and are shares and ranks only.

Your questions, answered
- What does Louis Vuitton Symphony smell like?
- Symphony is a bright, juicy grapefruit and bergamot citrus with a fizzy ginger edge over a soft, clean musky base, according to Louis Vuitton, Fragrantica critic Eddie Bulliqi and Fragrantica members. Some wearers find it sweet and fruity, others call it linear, and Fragrantica critic Igor Masyukov smells pomelo more than the listed notes.
- What are the notes of LV Symphony?
- Louis Vuitton lists a grapefruit accord, ginger and bergamot as key notes, and its own description adds orange. Parfumo lists grapefruit, bergamot, orange and ginger. There is no top, heart or base: the perfumer told A&E Magazine that Les Extraits was built as five perfumes with no top, heart or base notes.
- How long does Symphony last?
- Reports vary widely. A Parfumo reviewer could smell it 16 hours after applying, a Fragrantica member reports easily 24 hours on skin and days on clothes, and another Parfumo reviewer found longevity mediocre at best. Parfumo's own summary calls the longevity above-average. Skin and the amount sprayed both change the result.
- Is Symphony for men or women?
- Fragrantica and Parfumo both list Symphony for women and men, and Scento's catalogue labels it unisex. Wearers split: some say it leans feminine, others masculine, one Fragrantica member says unmistakably unisex, and Igor Masyukov of Fragrantica calls it a fragrance beyond gender, equally suitable for women and men.
- Is Symphony an extrait?
- Yes. Fragrantica reports that the Les Extraits collection, which Symphony belongs to, is concentrated at 30 percent. Louis Vuitton says perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud reinvents the perfume extrait with boldness and fluidity in this collection, and the five perfumes launched in 2021.
- Who made Symphony and when was it launched?
- The perfumer is Jacques Cavallier Belletrud and the launch year is 2021. Fragrantica reports the Les Extraits collection was available in Louis Vuitton stores from 7 October 2021. The bottle is architect Frank Gehry's first perfume bottle, according to Louis Vuitton.
- When should you wear Symphony?
- Wearers place it in warm weather and daytime. Fragrantica members call it a unisex daytime fragrance for warmer weather and perfect for hot summer, and say it works from the gym to a wedding. Igor Masyukov of Fragrantica says it lasts a long time even in high Middle Eastern temperatures.
- Is the Symphony bottle refillable?
- Yes. Louis Vuitton says the bottle is refillable in stores equipped with a perfume fountain, and engraving of initials or numbers is complimentary. The 100 ml spray was designed by architect Frank Gehry, with a hand-polished metal cap, according to Louis Vuitton's own Symphony page.
