Analysts size the global perfume dupe market at US$2.7–3.14 billion in 2025, growing about 16% a year.45 In Europe, fragrance is the dupe category consumers buy most: in a January 2025 survey, 24% of Spaniards and 16% of Britons said they had bought a dupe fragrance.6 Dupes are not counterfeits. A counterfeit copies the original’s trademark and is illegal, and EU authorities detained counterfeit goods worth €3.8 billion in 2024.2 This page reports the market neutrally, from named research and official data.

How big is the perfume dupe market in 2026?
No audited sales figure exists for perfume dupes, so every market size is an analyst estimate. Expert Market Research puts the global market at US$3.14 billion in 2025, growing 15.8% a year to US$13.61 billion by 2035.4 Its previous edition put the 2024 market at US$2.71 billion, reaching US$11.75 billion by 2034.4
Deep Market Insights gives a slightly lower base: US$2.70 billion in 2025, growing 16% a year from 2026 to US$6.58 billion by 2031.5 Lucintel also projects 15.8% annual growth for 2025–31 but does not publish its market value.14
Playbook of Beauty estimates that dupes made up 4.5% of the fragrance market in 2024 and forecasts 8.9% by 2030.9 The estimates agree on the growth rate far more than on the size.
Most of the gap in the forecast values comes from the horizon, not the starting point. The 2025 bases sit within about half a billion dollars of each other, but one forecast runs to 2031 and the other to 2035, so four extra years of compounding at a similar rate roughly doubles the end figure.45

Who buys perfume dupes in Europe?
Statista’s January 2025 survey asked consumers in five European countries whether they had bought “a non illegal lower-priced alternative that imitates a higher-end product”.6 Fragrance was the most-bought dupe category in every country surveyed.6
Spain led, with 24% of consumers saying they had bought a dupe fragrance. Italy followed at 18%, the UK at 16%, and Germany and France at 13% each.6 Statista does not name the survey’s underlying publisher on its page.
The question asks whether a consumer has ever bought a dupe, not how often or how much they spent. The figures therefore measure how widely dupes have reached each market, not their share of fragrance sales.
- Spain24%
- Italy18%
- United Kingdom16%
- Germany13%
- France13%
Survey wording: “a non illegal lower-priced alternative that imitates a higher-end product”.6
Dupe buyers in the US and Gen Z
In the United States, a 2025 survey by Circana and WWD Beauty Inc found that 43% of female beauty shoppers had bought a beauty dupe and a further 34% would consider one, 77% in total.7 Gen Z was the generation most inclined to buy fragrance dupes.7
Fragrance is one dupe category among several: in the same survey, skincare and make-up were the top dupe categories.7 For the generation’s wider fragrance habits, see our Gen Z fragrance statistics.
How fast is interest growing?
Playbook of Beauty’s analysis of Google Trends found that the search index for “dupe perfume” rose 8.9-fold between April 2020 and March 2025.9 The figure is the publisher’s own analysis, not an independent search-volume series.
Sales data points the same way. Circana reported that US mass-market fragrance grew 17% in the first half of 2025, “fueled by the rise of dupe culture”.8 Playbook of Beauty’s projection that dupes will grow from 4.5% to 8.9% of the fragrance market between 2024 and 2030 assumes this momentum continues.9
The brands behind the boom
Lattafa, a fragrance house from the United Arab Emirates, is the most-cited name in US sales data. It sold more than $63 million on US TikTok Shop between August 2024 and July 2025, up 174%, according to Charm.io data reported by WWD.10 Market Defense data reported by WWD puts its Amazon sales at over $100 million in 12 months.11 Spate measured a 102.1% rise in Lattafa’s popularity in 2025, and The Business of Fashion reports that the brand is working to shed its dupe image.12 Our report on Middle Eastern perfume trends covers the wider rise of Gulf houses.
Dossier reached about $60 million in US sales in 2025, with sales up 120% year on year as of February 2026, according to YipitData figures reported by Glossy.13 Oakcha, Alt. Fragrances and Zara are also widely cited in coverage of the category.
None of these brand figures is company-reported. They are third-party estimates from sales trackers (Charm.io, Market Defense, YipitData) and a trend tracker (Spate), each measuring one channel or one market, so they cannot be added up into a market total.10111213
Dupes vs counterfeits
A dupe and a counterfeit are different things in law. A dupe is a similar scent sold under its own name and packaging. A counterfeit carries the original’s trademark, name or packaging and is illegal. The EU figures below measure counterfeits, not dupes, and should not be quoted as the size of the dupe market.
The EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) estimates that counterfeits cost the EU cosmetics sector €3 billion in lost sales a year, 4.8% of its sales, and about 32,000 jobs.1 In 2024, EU customs and market authorities detained 112 million counterfeit items worth €3.8 billion.2 Perfumes and cosmetics made up 3.04% of the items detained.2 See our counterfeit perfume statistics and the guide to telling fake from real perfume.
| Definition | Legality | EU data | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dupe | A similar scent sold under its own name | Different from counterfeiting; see the EU ruling below | No official EU figures |
| Counterfeit | Carries the original’s trademark, name or packaging | Illegal | €3.8B of counterfeit goods detained in 2024; €3B of cosmetics sales lost each year 21 |
Are perfume dupes legal in the EU?
In L’Oréal v Bellure (C-487/07, 18 June 2009), the Court of Justice of the EU held that comparative advertising, such as comparison lists, that explicitly or implicitly presents a product as an imitation of a perfume with a well-known trade mark breaches the comparative-advertising rules and takes unfair advantage of the mark’s reputation.3 Selling an unbranded scent that merely smells similar was not the question decided.
What the dupe boom means for original perfumes
For shoppers who want the original perfume without committing to a full bottle, an authentic decant of the original is another route, and our European Decant Index tracks that market.
Scento’s own order data shows how the originals behind those guides sell as authentic decants. Scento is a curated European perfume retailer that sells authentic decants of the original perfumes, never dupes. Of the 25 perfumes Scento’s customers ordered most between October 2025 and September 2026, 20 are originals that our dupe guides cover, led by Louis Vuitton’s Imagination, Creed’s Aventus and Amouage’s Guidance.15 Middle Eastern houses, which the index defines as Amouage, Kajal, Kayali and Widian, made up 9% of decants ordered.15 Their share indexed 103 in the second half of the period against the first half (= 100), and 118 in the third quarter of 2026 against the fourth quarter of 2025 (= 100).15 Niche houses’ share of decants ordered rose from 60% to 67% between the same two quarters.15 Our perfume dupe guides compare individual originals with their best-known alternatives.
How we compiled this
We took each figure on this page from the research firm, survey, official body or news report named in its footnote, and checked every figure on 8 October 2026. Market sizes are analyst estimates and are shown as ranges where firms disagree. Currencies and growth rates are kept as each source states them. The legal summary reports a single court ruling and is not legal advice.
“Scento order data” means the Scento Fragrance Index: Scento’s own analysis of paid decant orders placed between October 2025 and September 2026. It publishes shares, ranks and indices only, never order counts, unit counts or revenue. This edition covers October 2025 to September 2026 only, so it makes no year-on-year comparison; trend indices compare the second half of the period with the first, or a quarter with the fourth quarter of 2025.
- Cancelled, test, staff and free orders are excluded.
- Middle Eastern houses are those founded and based in the Gulf that Scento sells: Amouage, Kajal, Kayali and Widian.
- “Covered by our dupe guides” means the perfume is the original in one of Scento’s published dupe guides; it says nothing about how often alternatives are searched for.
- A figure resting on too few orders to be stable is withheld.

Your questions, answered
- How big is the perfume dupe market?
- Estimates cluster around US$2.7–3.1 billion for 2025. Expert Market Research puts it at US$3.14 billion, growing 15.8% a year to US$13.61 billion by 2035; Deep Market Insights says US$2.7 billion, reaching US$6.58 billion by 2031. These are analyst estimates, not audited sales.
- How many Europeans buy perfume dupes?
- In a January 2025 survey reported by Statista, 24% of Spanish consumers said they had bought a dupe fragrance, ahead of Italy (18%), the UK (16%), Germany and France (13% each). Fragrance was the most-bought dupe category in every country surveyed.
- Are perfume dupes legal in the EU?
- Selling a different scent under its own name is generally treated differently from counterfeiting. In L'Oréal v Bellure (2009), however, the EU Court of Justice ruled that advertising, such as comparison lists, that presents a product as an imitation of a trade-marked perfume breaches the comparative-advertising rules.
- What is the difference between a dupe and a counterfeit?
- A dupe is sold under its own brand and only resembles another scent. A counterfeit copies the original's name, logo and packaging and is illegal. EU authorities detained 112 million counterfeit items worth €3.8 billion in 2024, perfumes and cosmetics among them.
- Which brands lead the dupe boom?
- Dossier reached about $60 million in US sales in 2025 (YipitData). Lattafa sold more than $63 million on US TikTok Shop in a year and over $100 million on Amazon, though it is working to shed the dupe label. Zara, Oakcha and Alt. Fragrances are also widely cited.
- Why are dupes growing?
- Price and social media. Circana linked US mass fragrance growth of 17% in H1 2025 to "the rise of dupe culture", and Playbook of Beauty measured an 8.9-fold rise in Google search interest for "dupe perfume" between 2020 and 2025.
