Celebrity fragrance is a hit-driven business: a few franchises earn billions while most launches fade within a few years. Elizabeth Taylor’s White Diamonds had passed $1.5 billion in sales by 2018.1 Paris Hilton’s fragrance line has passed $2 billion in global sales, and Ariana Grande’s franchise passed $1 billion at retail in 2024.23 Yet US department-store sales of celebrity fragrance fell from $150 million in 2011, about 4% of prestige fragrance, to $50.6 million in 2014.5 This page gathers the sales milestones, the companies behind the scents, the crash and the 2024–2026 revival, each with its source.

What is the best-selling celebrity perfume of all time?
Elizabeth Taylor’s White Diamonds, launched in 1991, is the best-selling celebrity perfume on record. It had passed $1.5 billion in sales by 2018, according to Business of Fashion.1 In 2026, Revlon, which owns the scent, says a bottle still sells every minute.1
Taylor’s launch set the template the category followed: a famous name, a licensee that develops and distributes the scent, and a department-store launch. White Diamonds has now been on sale for 35 years, which makes it the exception rather than the rule.
By franchise rather than single scent, Paris Hilton leads the published figures. Her licensee Parlux reports more than $2 billion in global sales across 30-plus fragrances since 2004.2
- 1991 Elizabeth Taylor launches White Diamonds.1
- 2002 Jennifer Lopez’s Glow sells $120M in nine months.6
- 2004 Britney Spears’ Curious and the first Paris Hilton scent launch.82
- 2011 Peak: $150M in US department stores, about 4% of prestige.5
- 2014 Trough: $50.6M, under 2% of prestige.5
- 2015 Ariana Grande’s Ari launches.4
- 2021 Billie Eilish’s Eilish launches.18
- 2022 Sabrina Carpenter’s Sweet Tooth launches.11

Who makes celebrity perfumes? The licence holders
A celebrity rarely makes the perfume. A licensee develops, produces and distributes it, while the star lends the name and creative input. A handful of companies hold most of the category.
- Coty launched Jennifer Lopez’s Glow in 2002 and held Beyoncé and Katy Perry historically.6 In 2026, Megan Thee Stallion launched Hot Girl Summer with Coty.1
- Elizabeth Arden held the Britney Spears and Taylor Swift lines and acquired Justin Bieber’s in 2012.712 Revlon completed its acquisition of Elizabeth Arden on 7 September 2016 and holds White Diamonds.13
- Parlux holds Paris Hilton, Billie Eilish and Drake’s Better World Fragrance House. Its 2025 net sales were an estimated $345 million.10
- Luxe Brands holds Ariana Grande, Khloé Kardashian and Nicki Minaj.3
- Scent Beauty holds Sabrina Carpenter, Dolly Parton and Kylie Minogue.1122
The star’s share is modest. Celebrity royalties average 5–8% of fragrance sales, according to WWD.5 Our article on how celebrity stories build fragrance brands explains why the name still sells.
How fast do celebrity fragrances launch?
The first year decides most celebrity scents, and the best launches are fast.
- Jennifer Lopez’s Glow sold $120 million in its first nine months in 2002, against a projection of $20–26 million, according to Billboard; WWD put its first-year sales at $80 million.616
- Britney Spears’ Curious sold a reported $30 million at retail in its first three months and about $100 million in its first year.208
- Justin Bieber’s Someday made $39 million and was the top women’s department-store fragrance of 2011.6
- Billie Eilish’s Eilish, launched in November 2021, was projected to pass $60 million in its first year.18
Early speed sets up a franchise. Curious had grown to $300 million and 10 million units across its franchise by May 2006.9
The launch model explains the speed. A celebrity scent arrives with a ready-made audience, heavy press coverage and wide distribution from the first day, so its sales are front-loaded. The same model explains the fade that follows: once the novelty passes, the scent has to sell on its own merits against designer and niche perfumes with decades of loyal buyers. Glow and Curious both outperformed their own projections, which is why licensees signed so many stars in the years that followed.68
Why celebrity fragrances declined (2011–2016)
Glow’s success in 2002 flooded the market with celebrity launches, and the bust followed a decade later. NPD Group data showed US department-store celebrity fragrance sales at $150 million in 2011, about 4% of prestige fragrance.5 By 2014 they had fallen to $50.6 million, under 2% of a $3 billion market.5 That is a fall of about two-thirds.
- 2011$150M
- 2014$50.6M

The decline ran against the wider market. In 2014, celebrity fragrance sales fell 51% while prestige fragrance overall rose 2%.19 In US mass retail over the 52 weeks to September 2015, celebrity fragrance fell 17% against a 4.7% fall for all mass fragrance, according to IRI data cited by WWD.5
Licensees felt it in their results. Elizabeth Arden’s sales fell 28.4% in its fiscal fourth quarter, April to June 2014, a drop blamed partly on the Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift lines.12 In 2016, celebrity scents made up 4% of prestige fragrance and their sales fell 22%, the BBC reported in 2018.14 The BBC figure and the NPD series use different bases, so the two shares are not directly comparable.
Three forces drove the decline, according to the trade coverage of the time. The market was crowded after Glow’s success, with many stars competing for the same shelf. Shoppers moved towards designer and niche houses. Retailers responded by cutting the shelf space they gave to celebrity lines, which made the next launch harder still.56

How long does a celebrity scent last?
Most celebrity scents are built for a short life. Industry experts told WWD in 2011 that the mass-market shelf life of a celebrity fragrance had fallen from about five years to about three.16 “It’s a rare celebrity fragrance that maintains a robust business past the first one,” product development expert Ann Gottlieb told WWD in 2015.5
The exceptions are the franchises in the table above. White Diamonds has sold for 35 years.1 Jennifer Lopez built 18 scents worth nearly $2 billion in a decade on the back of Glow.5
The 2024–2026 revival
Celebrity fragrance is growing again, led by a new generation of musicians.
- Ariana Grande: Circana named hers the top masstige fragrance division in 2024, and her Pink Woods scent made $6.5 million.15 Our guide to Ariana Grande Cloud alternatives covers her best-known scent.
- Billie Eilish: her line grew 30% in 2025, WWD reported in April 2026. Parlux’s president told WWD that Eilish was the number-one fragrance SKU at Ulta in 2025 and the number-two brand by units in Circana data.10
- Sabrina Carpenter: her company claims global retail sales of over $100 million in 2025, while YipitData measured $11 million in US sales.11 The first is a company claim covering all markets at retail value; the second is an independent estimate for the US only.
Retailers have noticed. In Klarna’s Black Friday 2025 data, Sweet Tooth by Sabrina Carpenter was the only celebrity fragrance in the beauty top 10.11 Today’s hits differ from the 2000s launches: many sit in the masstige tier below designer perfume, sell through beauty chains such as Ulta as well as department stores, and are promoted on social video as much as in print.
The wave is visible in the launch data. Circana reported that fragrance launches with limited or exclusive distribution more than doubled in size in the year to September 2025.21 Social media now drives much of this demand, as our article on PerfumeTok trends shows.
What share of the fragrance market is celebrity today?
No panel has published a current share for celebrity fragrance. The most recent figures in this record are NPD’s 2014 department-store share of under 2% and the BBC’s 4% of prestige fragrance for 2016.514 Since then, the growth of the Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish and Sabrina Carpenter lines suggests the category has gained ground, but until a panel publishes a figure, any precise current share is an estimate.
Celebrity versus designer: what you pay for
Quality depends on the licensee and the budget, not on fame. Many celebrity lines use the same fragrance houses as designer brands: Ariana Grande’s Lovenotes collection was made with Robertet and IFF, and Sabrina Carpenter’s line with dsm-firmenich.311 Our comparison of celebrity scents and designer perfumes explains what drives the price difference.

How we compiled this
We took every figure on this page from the licensee report, trade article, data-firm estimate or news report named in its footnote, and checked each one on 8 October 2026. Dollar figures are US dollars as published. Sales figures mix retail value, company-reported totals and panel data, so we name the measure beside each one.
- “Company figure” or “company claim” means a number published by the company that sells the fragrance, not an independent measurement.
- “Scento analysis” means a calculation we made from published figures, such as the fall of about two-thirds between NPD’s 2011 and 2014 totals.
- Where two sources disagree, as with Sabrina Carpenter’s 2025 sales, we show both and say which is which. Figures we could not trace to a published source are left out.

Your questions, answered
- What is the best-selling celebrity perfume ever?
- Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds, launched in 1991. It had passed $1.5 billion in sales by 2018, according to Business of Fashion, and Revlon says a bottle still sells every minute in 2026. By franchise, Paris Hilton's 30-plus fragrances have passed $2 billion in global sales, according to her licensee Parlux.
- How much has Ariana Grande's perfume made?
- Luxe Brands, her licensee, reported over $1 billion in global retail sales for the Ariana Grande franchise in 2024, up from $150 million in its first two years to December 2017. Cloud is her best-known scent, and Circana named her the top masstige fragrance division in 2024.
- Who actually makes celebrity perfumes?
- Licensees develop, produce and distribute them while the star lends the name and creative input. The main ones are Coty (Jennifer Lopez), Elizabeth Arden, part of Revlon since 2016 (Britney Spears, Taylor Swift), Parlux (Paris Hilton, Billie Eilish), Luxe Brands (Ariana Grande) and Scent Beauty (Sabrina Carpenter). Royalties average 5–8% of sales.
- Why did celebrity fragrances decline?
- The market was flooded after Glow's 2002 success. NPD Group data showed US department-store celebrity sales falling from $150 million in 2011, about 4% of prestige, to $50.6 million in 2014. Shoppers moved to designer and niche houses, and retailers cut shelf space for celebrity lines.
- Are celebrity perfumes coming back?
- Selectively. Billie Eilish's line grew 30% in 2025 and was the number-one fragrance SKU at Ulta, its licensee Parlux says. Sabrina Carpenter's Sweet Tooth was the only celebrity scent in Klarna's Black Friday 2025 beauty top 10. Circana says fragrance launches with limited or exclusive distribution more than doubled in size in 2025.
- Are celebrity perfumes good quality?
- Quality varies by licensee and budget, not by fame. Many use major fragrance houses: Ariana Grande's Lovenotes was made with Robertet and IFF, and Sabrina Carpenter's line with dsm-firmenich. Our comparison of celebrity and designer perfumes explains what drives the price difference.
